This song is also PRODUCED by Eminem.
Fun fact: the following is an annotation Em himself put on his Genius lyrics for this song.
''This is where I was dealing with critics who didn’t understand why people were identifying with me. I realized I was becoming like the rappers that I looked up to as a kid. I identified with and loved LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. I felt like if everybody didn’t understand their music, it didn’t matter - they were speaking to me. So that’s what I was trying to make people realize on this track. I may not be shit to you, but there’s a kid in fucking Nebraska, or somewhere, that I’m talking to. I don’t care if you’re listening, because he’s listening. That’s who I’m directing my material at.''

Yep. I was 16 when this song came out and my dad was an abusive alcoholic. We lived in a middle class suburb of Detroit, so I “Stan’d” a little harder than most...especially back then. But I remember I was fortunate enough to have a walk in closet. I would take my CD Walkman into the closet and lock myself in when my dad started to get violent. When this came out, this song was on repeat for months until court ordered me to go live with my grandpa. Exactly why some of us defend him so vehemently.

Kim deserves much credit in this herself too as eminem has stated in recent interviews. She had plenty of issues too but still raised a well adjusted child. Kim actually had the majority of parental authority for most of Hailies childhood. Hailie lived with Kim in their own home in detroit for 90% of her childhood. Eminem had court appointed authority to have her during the weekends but apparently (this is attested to by Kim and eminem himself later confirmed this) he would just lay in bed knocked out all day and never even pay attention to her and the maid would take care of her the whole time.
The official court records even state that Hailie cried and begged to not have to go and stay at Ems home for the weekends anymore and that she hated going there because he was always in bed. This is during eminems active drug addiction years (2003-2008), he was always knocked out on opiate drugs and stayed in bed. Thankfully he got clean from the painkiller drugs in 2009 and was able to be a loving and attentive father again after that.

@@Liverpool5095 Thanks for the education. I am a single mother and know well how easy it is to see us as not doing a good job while the fathers escape that same scrutiny. Still, I never gave a thought to Kim's true role in Hailie's upbringing.
I always tell my kids I am not proud of them for what they achieve in life, like so many parents are. I don't tie my pride in my children to their accomplishments. Some people value friends, family, or even personal pursuits like perhaps art and such, over ambition and will gladly work a low paying job to be home for the kids or others things.. I am proud of them for being well-adjusted, decent, and kind people. I am happy for them when they achieve their goals.
My daughter works as a home health aide and wants nothing more than to be a good mother to her daughter. She has achieved her biggest goal in life, overcoming the incredible risk of grand mal seizures causing her to miscarry. She has a healthy little girl and is extremely happy in life. My son works as a flagger for a road construction company and games online on his time off. Some parents would push him to do more but he is very happy and is a tremendous support to others around him, something I personally value.
Kim raising Hallie to be such a person speaks volumes about her as a parent. Thank you again for bringing me to this view of her.

Didn’t have to drag Drake down to make that point. Same way we may feel about Em, people feel about Drake. His music can mean the same to some people that Em’s music means to us. He’s also really good and has been on top for almost a decade.

@@dah500 I agree to some extent, however the reason Em’s music hits more is because he writes his own shit, about what shit he went through and all that, while Drake has ghostwriters writing for him. Christian Gergeo Drake by in large has written everything he’s released. He has used ghostwriters but you can’t take 160 songs that he wrote and then discredit his writing ability because 5 may have a couple lines that were written by someone else.

Yeah been a fan since 1999-ish they tried to ban him from coming to UK at one point, it didn't work back in 2001 but they still banned him from performing at HYDE Park just a couple years ago. He's faced and overcome so much and is a great artist all round. As big and successful as he is he's still somehow underrated and misunderstood completely.

He wasn’t as complex with his word play and all the multiple meanings this early in his career, but myself and a lot of EM fans would agree this is one of his best albums. If you listen to this whole album he was so on point with his rhyme schemes it seems like he would rhyme whole sentences or multiple words in every sentence... Not just this song but every song on this album, Also with content and flawless ability to ride the beat. A true artist at his craft

  • @unfilthy

I'm only a few years younger than Em, and I remember the insane backlash from the mainstream to him blowing up. It was everything from politicians to the news to religious figures to feminists to the music establishment to parents freaking out like he's infected their kids with some virus or something, while at the same time he had people coming up to him trying to test him he also couldn't have a second without fans coming up to him, it was an insane global phenomenon. I guess when you've seen that happen and then keep following and seeing what's been happening with him since then, on top of appreciating his skills, it's impossible to understand younger people who think they know what they're talking about because they maybe sorta heard a hook or two from his hits.
And I'm saying this as someone who's not even a "proper" stan, just being around through all this and hip hop being one of the genres I listen to. He wasn't even the first rapper I listened to, I'm just tying to explain that there's a lot of sympathy for him out there even outside the hardcore Stans.

You know what's crazy too about eminem.
Why the fans love him so much. Is because he tells you everything about himself.
What other rapper do you know the name of they ex? What other rapper do you know they kids name?
And that's not from Wikipedia or some shit. He tells you all that shit openly.
Oh shit you just made my point at the end. Haha.
I'm more convinced than ever that there is two types of people in the world: People who think eminem is a legend. And people who have never heard an eminem track that wasn't on radio.
