After finishing Strong Woman Do Bong Soon i want to watch this because Park Hyungsik is in it (an V) but I'm assuming that I will end up with second lead syndrome....I am highly weak to second lead syndrome (Eventhough i think that's the point XD)
To be honest, I enjoyed watching Hwarang (watched it around 2017). Maybe because I did not have any expectations from the beginning since I did not know any of its casts and I did not encounter any of its promotions (I mean, I know some of the actors here, but did not have any idea that they are the casts of it--especially Park Seo Joon, as I have watched some of his series beforehand, and Minho and V as I am a Kpop fan). Only a friend recommended this to me and Go Ara made me get curious to it since I discovered her in one of Kyuhyun’s music videos. And maybe because I’m just a simple person who watches dramas plainly that I just simply enjoyed it-though, still there are plot holes as I was watching it.
Though I enjoyed watching Hwarang and did not expect from the beginning, I started anticipating it as the first parts of it were very promising and hooked me, and Park Hyung Sik (whom I did not know and it was the first time seeing him acting) got my attention because of how well he carried his character as a hidden king. He was solely the reason I enjoyed it, that led me to finishing the series up to the end, because like most of the viewers, I too was disappointed with the romance between the fake siblings. It was a big turn off to me.
*spoilers alert*
The series would have been great if the story revolves around the making and the quest of the king, how he would become courageous, and how he would be able to overcome his inferiority. And this would have been greater if the creation of the hwarang were really a handful to making the king stronger while standing up. However, the writer/s and the director did not give his character justice and they did not give any real sense on creating hwarang.
None of the hwarangs were given proper character development, maybe except Ban Ryu. Yeo Weol’s character was just a waste, there is more from him to reveal, especially it is said that his father is among the officials but nothing was revealed and they did not give him proper characterization. Han Sung’s death is nonsense, maybe they just did it to stir the viewers’ (especially ARMYs) emotions, but no purpose at all. And about Dan Se, I did not know how come he became a hwarang at the end (did you notice, viewers?). It was too random to put him into hwarang without any explanation.
The first parts were written and directed amazingly, but along the way, there are some plot holes and the pacing of the later parts was rushed. They did not give the king the proper resolve for himself. Instead, most credits were given to Sun Woo and it’s Sun Woo who became the key to eliminating the villains and made Ji Dwi the king officially. Sun Woo’s help is necessary, but it seemed that they made the king so unable and use somebody else to carry him in his journey. The king was not given the chance to walk on his own strength and determination. Good thing the actor did well in portraying him, or else I would have really dropped the series.
I hope this series were focused more on the king and the hwarang. Romance was not really necessary here. If they wanted to add romance to it, it’s okay. But they should have not made it the focus of the story. The series was supposed to be the making of the king, but it turned out as a love story overall. Romance was really the major turn-off for me here (Ahro-Sunwoo OTP and Soo Ho liking the queen. I only liked Ban Ryu-Sooyeon’s love story). If not, I would be more satisfied if Ahro appreciated the king’s sincerity and chose him, and if Sunwoo would end up with the princess since I feel more for them, than that of siblings-turn-into-lovers couple.
Though there are lots of downers, I still enjoyed the series. These are just my analyses and anticipations as I was watching it along the way. This also became one of my favorite historical dramas (Scarlet Heart is my most favorite).
Totally agree with your analysis. I too didn’t know PHS. I only knew PSJ, Minho & V. I watched for them, and stayed for Hyungsik & his brilliant portrayal of the King. If not for his superlative performance the total downer of a love story between A-Ro & Seon-U was not an attraction for me. Ban-Ryu’s evolution & love story was good. Even Su-Ho’s crush on the queen was more entertaining than the OTP. I liked the princess too. A-Ro had a lot more reasons to fall for the King coz he was a total dream boat & a woman not feeling anything back for him was totally unrealistic in my opinion.

I just finished watching this on Netflix. I LOVED it so much, amazing Male cast, I didn’t like the female leads character at all, she was so miserable all the time, why did the writers want to make her character cry on every scene?!

I just finished this drama in 2 days i loved it the storyline and cast are amazing and this was my 2 th drama with Minho and must say he van not only sing but his acting is outstanding loved his character foolish in love with the queen 😂
