I heard that Vance's book indicated a dirt poor background, but actually it wasn't that extreme. He went to Ohio State University and got a law degree at Yale. My husband read Vance's book and said it wasn't anything special. The other day, I saw a video of Vance in which he referred to his wife as "my husband." Maybe there IS a gender issue with him. Peter Theil supports him and he's openly gay. Whatever, Vance gives me the creeps. He IS weird.

Jdvance mother was a drug addicted nurse - he was ultimately raised by his grandmother, who inspired him to really push himself in school. I can’t remember if his mom did time or not - it’s been years since I read the book….what a wild road he’s chosen

I keep waiting for the ghostwriter of Hillbilly Elegy to come forward. Right now, I imagine they're worried that they'll have to give all the money back, but I'm pretty sure they exist and could spill the beans. Because there is *no way* that the man whom I've heard speaking, who has no love for words, no interest in other humans, no ability to perceive or notice his surroundings, no compassion for others actually wrote any book. He has no ability to assemble words into an expressive thought. In short, there is NO WAY that man is an author. I'm an author, and have tons of experience with other writers since all my friends are writers. That man is no writer. Just sayin'....

He did not grow up poor. He did not grow up in The Hills of Ohio and is about as much a Hill Jack as I am. My mom's family came from Lawrence County Ohio and my dad grew up in Gallia County Ohio - both just above West Virginia.
