- My own solution to getting the kayak on the roof of my new high top fishing van. Using as per my previous cars two aluminium tubes and in this case a ramp from the children's old trampoline and an ATV winch.
I just found this video, and your rack design is absolutely BRILLIANT, especially in its simplicity. Since I don't have the right tubing from a child's trampoline, I'll have to figure out how to fabricate it from something else. Thank you! Chris (in Maine, USA)
No problem, I just done a new van and had same issue, I brought some tubing and had a company bend it special. Thanks for watching and the comments
I got a kayak two months ago, but still not used it, coz my van roof is so high. When I bought it the bloke used a forklift to load it. Not exactly practical. Anyway, finally designed something similar to yours but with a manual winch. Never crossed my mind to use an electric one, time for an upgrade before the original project is completed.👍
@@marksandland208 good luck , anything that enables you to load and unload is a win. Some people load one end and push up but it doesn’t work on high top vans. Hope it works for you whatever you decide. Don’t buy the rhino winch though. That I brought for new van and it’s very poor
Brilliant reusing, and recycling, old things to makes a super useful kayak winch slide. Good on ya
Cheers, gets used all the time and works a treat
@@carperblue we do say it elsewhere in the world too
Fair play to you I stopped kayak fishing when I bought my van you have inspired me
No worries buddy, I wish you success and some quality fishing time
Great video Gary and great innovation. Really incredible the work you are doing on this Van..
Thank you David. Hope to fish with you again in the near future
Carperblue Fishing hooo this will be a dream isn’t it.
CastaNet Fishing & Kayak Adventures this madness will pass the fish are getting bigger while they wait for us to return
Ingenious! Thanks for sharing you awesome kayak loading system.
Thanks Tom, still going strong and used weekly. Glad you liked it and appreciate your comment
That really is innovative and awsome Sir. Were you at all a little timorous about penetrating the van roof skin for the winch hold down bolts and the electrical feeds? Kind regards.
Yes a little, to be honest but I knew if I made a wider metal plate sandwich it would spread the load and give a larger surface area to seal and reduce risk of water ingress to zero. It stood me well for three years and many many trips, I am currently building a new van with a mark two version but in essence it’s very similar
@@carperblue I look forward to seeing what you come up with next Sir. Kind regards.
CarperBlue strikes gold again
Very well thought out. Top man. Just subbed 🐠👍🍺
Thank you 😊
Thx for the idea
Thanks for the watch and comment, I sold it end of last year and I am doing another, very similar to this one ☝️
Well thought out, nice job.
Thank you very much
Excellent innovation!!
Dogfather xx thank you
Kayak rollercoaster!
Is a bit 😀
Great idea Gary watch out for low bridges LOL
tony allen I find myself ducking inside the van 😅
Great idea, well done, Atb Dave
life's a Sprinter thank you
Great video, now all I need to do is find an old trampoline 😂. What is the make of the winch that you use? Thanks for posting.
I have just done another with flag poles, I got an engineer firm to bend them for me
Thanks for watching
absolutely brilliant!
Thanks buddy, still going strong many many launches later 👍
That's really brilliant!
😂 thank you, still going strong and used often
@@carperblue You've inspired me to build something similar for my truck canopy. The way I was loading the kayak (same one, actually) was a back injury waiting to happen. I have the winch mounted, trying to figure out the rails though. I was looking for a trampoline frame, but strangely, due to COVID, trampolines are impossible to come by!! I got a telescoping ladder which kind of works, but I'm realizing the way the kayak hull "slots in" is very important, otherwise the kayak just slides off the ladder sideways. Ideally I'd like to figure out rails that pull out from under the rack. Work in progress! Last thing...one of the most ingenious ideas of your system is the harness. Awesome!
@@midget2000x can you put stud work runners on your ladder maybe. My mate done a ladder version the ladder runs on a roller on his. Good luck I am sure you will get it working
i gotto do something like this, nice perch and pike
instant carper no worries glad you like
Had it rigged wrong at first. You caught it though. Nice vid.
Thank you for watching
Looking ace mate :)
The Eastbourne Fisherman thank you
Dude genius
Cheers, still going strong and used weekly
Just brilliant may I ask how did you attach the winch to the roof to be strong enough and not get ripped out
antony oxtoby it’s bolted with long coach bolts through wood to make a mounting sandwich if that makes sense
Well done.
Thank you 😊
Sweetness
Thank you
This is awesome! What kind of foam did you use on those aluminum poles on the roof?
Thank you, I used pipe insulation 28mm I think. Scaffold barrier foam works too the yellow stuff
Nice!
Thank you 😊
i have the rhino nautic kayak lifter. i want to replace the manual winch with and electric one like yours because i almost always rooftop my yak at around midnight or so and the crank is so loud. is the electric winch loud at all?
No not really loud you can hear it but it’s pretty quiet
oh man that is good
😀😍cheers
How do you find the outback being strapped down right side up? Any issues with the hull denting?
Matt Norman no problem at all the load or weight is spread the length of the hull and also foam lagging. It’s very secure been using this method or variety of it for 3 years
How did you make it so the weight of the kayak didn't RIP it out of roof
antony oxtoby it has a wooden brace on the inside of the roof skin
Updated it has an aluminium plate either side now . Just to make it a slimmer profile and better looking
That's great! Now I need to find someone with a trampoline they are throwing away.
A friend of mine has copied it with aluminium scaffold poles. It does not have a gradual bend like mine but works just the same. Thanks for watching
Whats CORVID? is that an offshoot of COVID?
🤪😂
Top banana! 🍌
Green Apples thank you very much . Love your user name btw 🍏
