The guide rods are supposed to be level with the stone. Put on flat surface and then tighten.
The clamp isn’t set correctly either… sure is easy to spot the TH-camrs that don’t know what they’re doing , just putting out content . 👍🤷♂️🤦♂️
@@BAMA-1986 yes, it's not technically correct, but I think you're being a bit harsh. he still got a damn good edge on that knife.
@@alholz7836 Give a Monkey a wrench and eventually he’ll figure out how to use it …. I bought my Lansky system in '82 and have enjoyed using it for all types of blades ever since. Professional job, easy for any novice.
Do you think it’s suitable for quite expensive kitchen knives too?
@@pjw1980 based on my 30+ years of experience, definitely. I'd say it's probably better on kitchen knives than any other kind. Just strop the blades after sharpening, because Lansky can create a bit of a burr when you're just beginning with it. And be careful, because it creates a demonic edge.
@@pjw1980 I do. I've never tried sharpening any scalloped-edge blade, but all others work beautifully.
This should be a great help for me. I've always had my brother sharpen up my hunting knives just before the season begins. I mean the dude could turn a cheese slice into a razor. But, that's no longer an option. So while I was rummaging around the camp trailer i found this kit. And this video looks like I'll be able to make a good enough job doing it on my own. Simple and straightforward. 👍👍
Its a good set for sharpening. But he doesn’t really kno how to use it correctly 💯 %
@@carlostovar8585 yea I wasn't 100% clear about leveling the stones with the rods. It's the way you should do it. I may at some point redo this video, that's what most people have issues with when I was demonstrating this.
I'm
When you lift and only do a slight tug in the opposite direction it's to remove burs .But this is usually only done on single edge blades
Glad to find this video before purchasing my first Knife sharpening system. It will sharpen my Chief Knives at a very reasonable cost. It's mobile too for outdoor Barbeque cookouts., i.e. Brisket, Porkbutt, etc. Wicked Edge Pro 2 was stupidly expensive. So that is out for me.
Thank you very much for a very comprehensive and informative video, very well explained and presented, I have just found your channel and have now subscribed. I just received the Lansky Deluxe system yesterday and will have your video on standby to keep me right 👏🤗 whilst I sharpen, this will be my first time use of this system and I will definitely take your advice and start on a cheap knife first.
Thank you again and take care
Sam👏👍
You absolutely have to set the guide rod and stone level with each other on a flat surface. I know there are detents on the rod but from my experience they are not consistent.
It will completely throw the geometry off if you don't do it that way AND there will be inconsistency through every stone with a variation or a couple degrees at most. Which is a big deal you really care about an accurate and precise edge
Also, you're only supposed to go one direction into the blade from heel to tip.
Per lansky themselves. It also ensures a uniform grain/grind pattern for longevity and once again consistency.
If your rubbing back and forth what inevitably happens is you will have spots that have seen more stone passes and more material than other areas of the knife
I know you still got a pretty good edge on it, but for me consistency matters a lot
For a start, before you do a tutorial on a Lansky sharpener you should learn how to correctly clamp a knive into the sharpener!
Someone didn’t read the instructions, but close enough
Yep, the back and forth motion …. 👍
Pushing the rod all the way in, as opposed to making sure it's flat with the bottom of the stone, *does* throw off the angle by a small amountt. But the truth is, it doesn't much matter for most knives. The difference between, say, a 19deg edge and a 20deg edge just doesn't matter. In fact, even if you do position the rod correctly, you'll still rarely hit the exact angle, because this system doesn't take the blade width into account. A narrow blade, where the edge is close to the clamp, will get a larger angle from any given position. A wide blade, where the edge is further from the clamp, will get a smaller angle. But for most people, those slight inaccuracies just don't matter.
Your right, the stones should be leveled with the rods. I wasn't clear on that because I never had an issue with it. But I started doing it that way after, and while there really isn't much difference it's more precise and it should be done the correct way. Thanks for letting people know the correct way 👍
Had this for a few years and never really knew how to use it thanks buddy
Nice sharpener for the price! Works great 👍
Jst ordered my Lansky sharping kit last night 1/3/24, looking forward to putting some nice edges on some knives
This was Meyer Lansky’s knife sharpener of choice
Very nice production work, great descriptions, and very thoroughly detailed. Thank you for the hard work. Would there be any chance you could make a video to show how to keep the kit so clean?
How not to use a lansky
Seems to not work on Scandi grinds. Made my knife duller.
My Lansky system is so old it only has the mounting hole drilled on one side of the clamp
I take my bugout to 17 degrees great for slicey edge
With the wingnut somewhat lose sit the stone and the rod on a table making sure they are both flat on table Then tighten wingnut now they are ready to use
Thanks! This is helpful- just got the diamond system.
Great job. You've explained it like no other video, Very simply. Thank u. Bout to break it out, my knives are dull.
@@AlphaWolfKNW Yeah good video very clear
Excellent tutorial. I have the original set and have always had good results. I need to add the c clamp base and a few of the diamond stones. Great video 👍
The purple diamond stone and the leather strop are a must. Goes from good to great.
Does this work without clamping it to the table? I noticed the c clamp doesn’t come with the system
No, you don't have to clamp it to the table. The clamp is an accessory, but it make it alot easier. Money well spent I'd say
Nice video! I do have a question, I noticed when you inserted the rod into the stone, you inserted all the way. Other videos I watched shows placing the stone on a flat surface and keeping the angle of the rod even with the back of the stone. Does it matter? I wasn't sure if it affected the angle of the stone against the blade or not....thanks!
@@AlphaWolfKNW thanks! Your video is still one of the more detailed and explained. Great tutorial.

Can you clap a double edge dagger with a fuller in this?
I‘m new in sharpening is the Diamond Kit wit leather etaschment enough or do i nead ceramik the clamp is also nice like your Video ❤
@@AlphaWolfKNW ok thanks
Great video as I just bought the Lansky 4-Stone Deluxe Diamond System with additional 1000grit yellow ceramic.
I also have the Lionsteel M4 which I measured ~22deg secondary bevel and thinking if the 20deg marked on the lansky bracket is close enough?
Cheers
@@AlphaWolfKNW Do you think the 2 deg difference will be an issue?
@@AlphaWolfKNW Many thanks
Is that system any good for recurve blades ?
they make a set of rounded stones that’ll work for blades with big curves
Benchmade recommends 30 for the angle of sharpness
Great video I just received the normal kit as a gift. I’m gonna pick up the c clamp. How do you know what angle the blade is like your benchmade was a 20 degree?
my chef knife is set to 15 degrees....hate the fact that Lansky stops at 17 degrees ....
Hi, the kit comes with the base or not?
Not it's extra
600 grit is "fine"?...
Man you just plopped the knife right in the clamps not caring where's it at lol
Please don’t listen to this guy, just read the instructions.
Was just thinking this
Is that ok for mora 120 blade?
Too much polish paste. 🤪
So, this is all completely contrary to the instructions provided by Lansky. I don't know who to trust.
Consistency is the most important part
The depth of the spine of the knife in the lansky holder IS critical. Place it too deep and without commonality, it WILL change the angle -- hence, why Lansky sharpeners come with an inscribed molded line molded into the aluminum holder about 1/8th of an inch from the tips of the holder 'fingers'. That line tells you how far into the holder, the spine of the knife would go. Sliding the spine so deeps -- as shown here -- is the WRONG technique.
You have to understand that the particular knife he chose for this tutorial has a beveveled spine. The jaws won’t clamp down unless he inserts it into the flat of the blade.
Directions from Lansky... "For very small blades use notch in knife clamp. Position regular and oversized blades beyond notch and well into knife clamp." That was a regular size blade he was sharpening - he clamped the knife correctly.

How ya doing brotha? 🔥
Someone needs to rethink teaching.... You had no clue what you were doing...
Quite a lot of what your showing the viewers does not match up with the instructions provided with the kit. I gather the people at Lansky don’t know what they’re doing.
Lol, read directions. Blade is clamped onto the very tip of the clamp, that's the purpose of the cut out. You just don't stuff your blade into the clamp and tighten lol.

Lol kinda made up his own Express tutorial on it the shorthand version lol
I have a Boker Plus Urban Trapper, very thin blade, vg 10 steel. what angle/ starting stone would you recommend? its pretty sharp already, but i'd like to split hairs with it :)
This typical youtuber didnt watch a video or read the instructions on how to set up the rod and stone properly. Fancy making a video telling people how to use this sytem without even doing the homework 1st to do it properly.
I hate secondary bevels.!
