    Here's an authentic Orange Julius just like they used to make it back in the day. The "secret" ingredient, is powdered milk, merengue (egg white) powder, and powdered vanilla. Back in the mall heyday they used fresh squeezed OJ. and they even tested how fast employees had to squeeze the oranges, you had to be quick. That's really true. For a large, you use a tray of ice, cup of so of OJ, 2/3's to a cup of simple syrup, a full tablespoon of the powdered milk, a full tablespoon of the merengue powder, and a teaspoon of vanilla. I couldn't find powdered vanilla but the liquid seems just fine. Rev up the blender and there you go. Truth be told the real thing is no health drink, it's a full on sugar treat. But that is the real thing, an authentic OJ, when you taste it you'll know it's true.

      Very interesting and informative, thanks Robert! While our recipe is refreshing and delicious, it's not quite as frothy as the original we remembered from the good old days at the mall. We appreciate this information!

    I remember in the mall in the 80s they would put a raw egg in the blender as well but maybe they make them without them now.I used to be addicted to orange julious.Every trio I made to the mall I would get one of them.

    • @Our80sLife
      @Our80sLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, that's crazy to think about them putting raw egg into it, but that makes sense because it would give it that distinctively foamy texture. I remember getting them a lot at the mall in the 80s too. I especially loved the strawberry flavor. Thanks for stopping by our channel and sharing your memories!

    My mom used to get these all the time when we were young and I literally always have a hankering for them. They are so freaking delicious and refreshing it's unbelievable LOL it's like my favorite thing in the entire universe! I love you guys for making this!! BTW I read a lot of comments such as " you should have done this" "Next time don't use this" " I wouldn't have made it that way" etc. Pay no nevermind to that. This is your version of the best Orange Julius recipe out there and it is great!! It is SIMPLE, it is delicious, AND.. If it were changed- well..It wouldn't be your recipe! I love it! If annnnyone prefers different- they can go and make their version and share it lolol. Thank you for making this sweet video! ❤️

    I got the idea to just use ice cream instead of the milk sugar and vanilla

      @Our80sLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yum!! That might be a bit thicker and more rich, like a milkshake. Sounds delicious! Have you tried the frosted lemonade at Chic-fil-a? It’s half ice cream and half lemonade. So good!!

    Those O.Julius people lied to you. It is NOT a milk product. My uncle worked there in the 70s and told us what the powder really was. A dried egg white.

    I use to make these for my kid’s in the 80’s. I saw it on a tv program. I cup powdered milk, 1 sm. Package vanilla pudding, 2 cups crushed ices all in the blender. Add your orange juice made from concentrate. About three cups. Add more juice if needed to get the right consistency.

    This was a recipe that was taught in my Home Ec class 30ish years ago. What was great back then was our local supermarket actually had frozen orange juice concentrate in 6oz cans; we could use 1 can to whip up a batch. Now I have a sudden craving to make this.

    My first job at 14 was an Orange Julius stand. I remember a hot dog with everything meant adding .75 cents! I cut up more oranges than I ever thought possible but if I wanted $17 jeans, I was going to have to pay for them myself! I swear back then, we paid per pocket! Those jeans were amazing and I mist have looked cute in them because thats when I met my future husband.

    I tried a simple mix, I bought Skittles powdered drink packets and used the orange flavor, 8 teaspoons or pumps of vanilla flavor coffee creamer, 8 ice cubes, and approximately 24 oz of water and blended. Not bad and the only sugar was in the coffee creamer. You could add ingredients to make it your own

    Hi you guys! Orange Julius is sooo good! Looks like you did great at making the copycat recipe! It’s been about 6 yrs since I worked at Dairy Queen and made these but I remember there were two different powders we put in (one was the milk) but I can’t remember what the other one was. We also didn’t add straight sugar or vanilla. We still have an orange Julius in our mall so I hope that stays open because I love the triple berry smoothie!!
    Oh and btw.....I had a dream that we were all in Las Vegas again lol

      Oh my goodess!! We definitely didn't see that, but I think if I had I wouldn't be drinking it again. Yuck! We've heard from other viewers that they used an egg powder, so perhaps that was changed at some point for food safety... let's hope!

    • @CapnTom-nd1jl
      @CapnTom-nd1jl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Our80sLife I found out the raw egg was an energy booster and costed extra just like when you go to a smoothie stand and get a shot of energy or protien or whatever added to your smoothie. Anyways eggs are pasteurized in the USA so as long as they are not pink or red they are safe to eat raw.

      I've never heard anyone say they don't like the orange concentrate. That's interesting. You can't taste the orange concentrate directly it tastes just like orange juice with the milk cream mixture. The orange concentrate just gives it more of a kick of orange. There are still Orange Julius locations around. I'm not sure where you live but they do have a location map site on their web address.

    Hi guys that orange julius looks fantastic! I had a Ninja blender to and I let Rodney take it to college and that's the last I saw of it I have to well I was going to say I'll have to see if he's still got it but sadly he's not speaking to me I don't know. I don't know if I had told you or not when Megan died at that's my daughter his mama he was very upset because I had our preacher give a service for her and he is very against church at the moment. He claims to be an agnostic which is better than a full-blown atheist and I've he's never gotten help with grieving. It is hard to lose a parent but especially at the age the boys were. Rodney is 25 now I think and Nathan is 18 and I think Nathan is going to go to grief counseling it was really hard for him to lose his mama. He has never liked School which is a shame because he really is a bright boy, it's not just my prejudice he really is I mean he was chosen to go to the highest reputation High School in the whole County it's almost guaranteed to get you into just about any college he had wanted to go to Miami University just because it's so pretty and because that's where Rodney went.
    Well let's change the subject! One of Monica's friends spent the weekend with us to help clean out the yard and shed for spring they had about 4 big cans garbage cans full of twigs and branches and leaves that have come down through all the storms we had this winter and spring. Monica mode the grass and Rob mapped out how he wants to trim the shrubs next week. I think he just likes to come over. when my kids were young my house is always full other friends. Megan had lots of girlfriends that would come and stay but Monica always had more guy friends. Not romantically, and actually a few of her best friends AR gay. Rob has been married and has two daughters and last in a couple years ago, he had an aneurysm that his crippled him up pretty badly. Such a shame for such a young guy. well I guess everybody's getting older Monica is 46 now and Rob is 48 and Stephanie holy cow is 53! No wonder I feel so old. Chuckle chuckle! I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow to check on Kevin, that's my stump if you didn't know, so I have to get to bed early and get up early ugh
    I'm still trying to get caught up on all the blogs that are that are piling up on me cuz I've been on the reading binge! I'm going to try my hardest to join me in the lounge Friday. Take care God bless and much love Donna

      Hi Donna! Sorry to hear about Rodney (and your Ninja blender!) Zoe got one from her grandma to take to college, and when we tried it out that’s when we decided we needed one too, ha ha! Now we’re pretty much addicted to making these refreshing Orange Julius drinks. We’ve both had colds, and they really hit the spot.
      Keith has been cleaning out our flower beds too, and he’s starting to plant flowers as well. I’m so happy that spring has finally arrived. I’ve been taking Jesse for daily walks so we can both get some much-needed exercise.
      We wish you all the best and hope Kevin gets a good report at the checkup tomorrow!
      Love and prayers,
      Abby & Keith ❤️

    Love my Vitamix. Just made one using frozen mango chunks, orange concentrate, soy milk and one egg. It was creamy and delicious, no sugar needed. Why do you like your Ninja blender more?

    • @Our80sLife
      @Our80sLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching our video! We had a Vitamix that worked great, but it finally died after about 12 years. I'd say we got our money's worth for sure! The reason we prefer the Ninja is that scary-looking blade system. Because it has multiple blades on a rotating center piece which is removable, it's able to chop more effectively (especially ice!) With the Vitamix, we often needed to use the tamper and mash items down toward the blade at the bottom. We never have to do that with the Ninja. I think it depends on what you're making, but for frozen drinks the Ninja reigns supreme. Mango is a nice addition - that sounds yummy!

    Now that's my kind of recipe, how awesome! Nothing fancy or weird that I can't find! We have a Ninja kitchen system (blender, food processor and 2 smoothie cups) and that thing is awesome! It's held up well too, I think we've had it about 8-10 years. But Keith is right, you gotta be careful with those multi level blades, I have cut my fingers before, ouch. Ha, love the optimism that there will be enough left for another night, haha! Bet that OJ concentrate was strong! I wonder if you could use powdered milk, I have some that needs to be used somehow :) I agree on the real vanilla :) Oh wow, your Ninja is much nicer and newer than ours, we don't have all the fancy buttons, Auto IQ or frozen drink, fancy! Looks great guys, thanks for finding us a good copycat recipe! Have a blessed day ---Stacy

      Hi Stacy! We bought this Ninja blender (and it has the other things too) a few months ago, and we are loving it!! I definitely think you could use milk powder because that’s what DQ was using. These drinks are really refreshing. Now we can’t stop making them, lol!!
