How to Breed Corydoras Catfish!

  • Wow, am I finally posted a video on time?! This is an in depth guide on breeding common corydoras, such as albino corydoras, bronze corydoras, peppered corydoras and MOST corydoras that you would commonly find in your local big-brand aquarium/pet store. There is many many reasons why your catfish might not be spawning/breeding. I'm hoping this list helps you figure out what's wrong with your fish! This video also includes some spawning triggers :)
What sort of corydoras are you trying to spawn?
I just want y'all to know that this thumbnail took entirely too long to edit.

Hi Jill! Corydora's are by far my favorite type of aquarium fish. Ever since I was a little kid my Dad always had a 75 gallon tank set up in our house. He always kept a pair of Angelfish, several types of Mollies, Shrimp, Neon Tetras, a Pleco and Corydora's. My Dad had several types of Cory's... Albino, Bronze, Julli, Black band and Spotted. Corydora's were the first type of fish I was able to successfully breed, which I thought was amazing! My favorite type of Cory is the Bronze. I've had a few of them live 5-6yrs, which is part of the reason I like them so much. Anyway, Just wanted to say... I love your channel!

I get 20 to 30 eggs I was letting them go and not taking them separating them and nothing was happening I was getting her babies. So I decided to get a little hang on basket net and I put them in there and waited and I ended up with about 5:00 so far. But after their sack is gone they're dying and I don't know what I'm doing wrong here I wasn't deliberately trying to bring them I only have two albinos and to Pepper in my aquarium, so I do want more to get bigger groups make them happier. Then I can move them to the 70 gallon tank once I have enough. But let me know I was giving them brine shrimp eggs

When I was in college many years ago I had a small little tank in my dorm with two corydoras I'd gotten from a pet store, not even knowing if they were male or female. One day I saw what appeared to be a few eggs...not knowing what to do exactly I removed the eggs into a separate container with the tank water for safekeeping. To my surprise a few of them actually hatched and grew up. I guess they are easy fish to breed!

Don’t forget to outcross, adding some fry to the breeding group is fine, but sell the excess and add more new blood to your breeding group. Avoiding inbreeding whenever possible is a good way to improve the gene pool of the captive population. If more people do this, the quality of the fish being sold will naturally increase.
Since we are on the topic of inbreeding and genetic diversity, wild fish are absolutely worth their weight in gold. They have fresh genes that will improve the gene pool.

Very helpful video! I had panda Cory’s as a kid and one day I noticed a single baby swimming in the tank. Didn’t do anything special to make that happen, and it was actually a very suboptimal situation in a 5 gallon tank that was overcrowded with fancy guppies.
Planning to try getting my orange Venezuelan and orange laser Cory’s to breed in my 150 gallon planted tank (I need more of both of them first), and will be getting a different variety for my son’s 30 gallon tank to try breeding (probably either pandas, Julii’s, Adolfi, or another type that’s known to be easier to breed and very fun to watch in a group)
Any suggestions on breeds that are easier to breed than others with corydoras catfish?

Interesting video, thanks. After many years together my pair of Emerald Corys suddenly produced about a dozen little ones, not sure why now, but its great to see. I once had a long tail Panda mate with a short tail, and produce a medium sized tail pair of fry that were very cute, and lived for years, but never produced any more fry. I have a well established and heavily planted tank so I think that helps with the survivability of the fry. Also, I am not sure if the fry are growing at different rates, or if they are actually from multiple hatches, since some are quite small and some are much larger, or do they just grow at different rates?

I am also wondering about this: In October 2022 I got 3 Albino Corys (all there were at the store), 3 weeks later I bought 3 more to have the standard 6. The odd thing is though they were all the same size when I got them, (very small a bit over an inch long) for the last few months they have settled into what seems to be their long term size. One is VERY big (for a Cory) and I have named him Zoyburg! - he is about 3 inches long, two are extremely small - still about an inch maybe 1.25 of an inch, and the other 3 are in the middle; maybe a bit over two inches. Recently they DID lay a bunch of eggs (probably the largest one - but did not see them doing it) after an evening of acting absolutely nuts. I was worried something was wrong; so checked the water and while nitrites were fine, nitrates were a bit high. So; did a 65% water change with usual chemicals, put a new zeo - carb insert in my AquaClear filter, and rinsed off several of my artificial plants. Then I turned off the light and covered the tank with a towel. The next morning I found 2 bunches of eggs on the glass of the tank . However I am currently not too excited as I don't think they will survive. I put them all into a breeding box, with airstones nearby. Am wishing I would have just put the airstone in with them as now (two days on) think they may be dead as they look white. What I need to know is HOW TO KEEP THE EGGS ALIVE TO HATCH. I know that I DID have to move them as the tank they are in (Vista 16 - BEST TANK EVER IMO) has 4 different types of fish, all very small - 6x Albino Corys, 6x Rio Tetras, 2x Clown Plecos, 2x Bristlenose Plecos. Everyone gets along very well and they are happy as can be, but I am sure they would have eaten the eggs had I not moved them. The Plecos love to hang out on the tank walls so they would definitely have found them! If anyone has any ideas re 1 - THE 3 DIFFERENT SIZES or 2 - HOW TO HATCH THE EGGS, please let me know. BTW The two tiny ones are not in any way weak or sickly. In fact they are the most active ones and love to swim quickly from side to side , or to the surface. I am wondering if that is why they stay so small - too much exercise! Conversely Zoyburg, the giant one, stays near the tank bottom almost all the time and spends all his/her time looking for food & eating it. They two in the middle are mainly on the tank bottom but swim a bit though not NEARLY as much as the two teeny ones. The teensy ones are a joy to watch, and I sometimes think that they think they are tetras, as they like to swim with them!

In the past, I have kept hastatus, habrosus and pygmaeus and would absolutely love to breed them.

My orange laxer corys bred once and have not done so again in 2 weeks. Honestly don’t remember what I did or what triggered the spawn but I am acing trouble spacing them again :(. Will try to buy live black worms to feed them today and hopping this helps. I was told doing cold water changes during a low pressure front helps too but is that really a good trigger or will I be wasting my time waiting for the low pressure front to come?

I like salt and pepper cories (habrosus) the most. They stay small and still retain the bottom dwelling corydora behavior unlike the other pygmy species that tend to be spend alot of time mid-level. Also can't help but say you look nice.

And yes, cories love boiled veggies. Although sometimes, it can take a day or two for mine to touch zucchini 🙂

So I bought more peppered cories and I don’t think my first cories were peppered cories. Unfortunately I bought the new Coreys and a couple algae eating fish and had them in quarantine and the algae eating fish ended up being a Chinese algae eating fish and it killed 4 of my new Coreys. Only one survived. I should’ve paid more attention to what the fish keeper was doing normally I just let them do their thing so they don’t feel rushed

Currently breeding both regular and long finned panda corys, plus long fin green aeneus AKA bronze corys. I have a 2M/1F trio of ehrhardti corys but those were a rare lucky find for me, and I have NO idea how to breed them...

Hi Jeremy 😄 I totally feel for you. I'm limited to Australia for my fish. They have serious importation laws here so it's hard for me to find rare cories/other fish 😢

I have a tank that's just 2 albino Cory cats, Mama and Papa Cory (respectfully), they're a breeding pair and I've been wanting some Cory fry. Mama Cory lays TONS of eggs and I've even watched her, and based on my research they're fertilized, but my problem is that the eggs fall off the glass between the 2nd and 3rd day that they've been laid and I don't know why. This has happened more than I can count and I'm getting pretty sad that there's no fry. Do you know what's going on?
