Although, despite that, I know he’s not in any rush to get anything out as he has said on LIFE. I’m just glad he’s working on a new album in the middle of side quests(I.e. Harvest Moon event, performing at weddings , doing collabs). I would love if he went pop again because I loveeee TSFE. I don’t blame him for wanting another hit either. He deserves to have more positive attention towards him from the general public. I have faith that Blake will be a good producer for him if he is producing JM9 and that he will get John to where he wants to go next in his musical career. He might be young, but look at all the hit songs he’s helped make. I also do wonder how people get him to perform at their weddings and if it is connection based or not.

I totally agree with what you are saying . I remember once John saying he works out where he sits musically in relation to what other artists are producing/ making at the time. So although Id like another 'Born and Raised' I dont he's in that head space. Hes listening to new music all the time with his radio channel so i think has got his new 'mission statement' based on the Zedd/Finneas/ Harry Styles type of album I hope . The funky stuff I call it. It certainly wouldnt be a repeat of anything hes done before on album and would lead on from Sob Rock as a progression in his eyes I think . He doesnt feel to be in a Born and Raised mindset at all and just finishing the Solo tour - the acoustic side is done for a bit and we are in funky guitar era. Just my thoughts on it
He's certainly very aware of the surrounding musical landscape and he stays very musically relevant. Great guitar playing, producing, and music has an infinite shelf life.
I saw the screenshots on the JMKB FB group and it was quite exciting to know the photo was very recently taken. I don't want to have much expectations of what that new album is going to be, but I just hope it will have some great writing on it. That's the hallmark of JM music for me. Genre doesn't matter (to me). Thanks for another informative episode!

It could certainly still be that! Don Was is a really versatile producer when it comes to styles (just think Born and Raised vs Sob Rock), so I don’t think Blake would necessarily make John sound like Sam Smith or something. We’ll see!

I don't see this as a bad thing. Personally, I really like "New Light" and have enjoyed "Automatic Yes." Mayer is an explorer, and I feel like we always get one random song on each album that doesn't necessarily fit. I'm hoping for something more like "The Search for Everything" that offers something for everyone. Tom and I will always agree that this is a well-rounded album.

You never know. The songs we saw from the solo tour were very much in their raw piano/vocal/guitar stage. I think we'd be surprised where production and treatment could take some of those tunes.
My mayer friends and I jokingly call JM the wedding singer sometimes 🤵🏻♂️💒 like he actually does a good number of weddings specially when it’s a non tour year. They just usually fly under the radar. Sometimes we never even get pictures cause they are so private. I’m always surprised there’s this many rich people out there than can hire him 😂 Must be nice
This was news to me. Interesting speculation! I had been hoping for something more along the lines of 'Born and Raised.' The pop-oriented producer, Spotify reference, and recent Zedd collaboration don't have me feeling super optimistic about this album, but I will try to withhold judgment. 😐 A record that would be a smash hit for a lesser artist could easily be a disappointment for John when stacked up against the rest of his discography -- one of the perils of being great.
🙄🙄 i’m sorry but i’m very very critical on this if this is correct, i mean, i really hope it’s a joke who wants to be Spotify number 1 artist, cause i mean i don’t think 1) he’s going to be 2)it’s necessary 3)spotify and streaming services are great for real “old” artist 4)to be number 1 or really relevant considering who’s on that level now has to be a certain kind of artist and i’m afraid he’s gonna change that much plus this producer is half of his age, and not that much of artist that a John Mayer fan usually listen, i mean i love mostly every kind of genre but maybe i’m old enough to not appreciate this new pop, it’s not room for squares pop, it’s not madonna/justin timberlake/katy perry, etc 90s early 2000s pop, it certain not singer songwriting pop, it’s heavy artificial stuff, a lot of computer, voices that seems more a robot than everything, i’m afraid because this is probably the last album he’ll record before the massive change that AI will take, i thought he would have taken the more deep path at this point, i guess i was expecting something more like born and raised or sob rock but not heavly new light thing, ewww, new light is like one of his worst song, gosh… not that much of an hype for the new album as of right now ...
I hate to be that guy but the potential of John going back to pop with a producer that's in his mid 20s is really disappointing. (Completely personal opinion)
JM is very much the lead producer on what he does, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about him being steered in the “wrong” direction by anyone. I get your sentiment though!
