    This made me so happy because I use Carbothello pencils! My only complaint is that there are a few colors that I wish they had like a true red, and a cat-eye green to name a couple. Otherwise, I love them!

    I agree with you. I say this because when I went back to pastels and found your channel and you did pencil comparisons I got my first large set of carbothello and I won’t go back. Again at your advice I have purchased the black and white in Pitt. Again love what they do for my drawings. All in all I thank you greatly for your advice on pencils, paper and the tutorials that you share so kindly. All of these things have improved my work greatly. Thank you 🙏

    Yes agree carbothellos are the best, I pick my colours from pitts and carbothello but find I mainly use the carbothello as match up more, they’re easier to use as well

    My favorite is Carbothello due to the ease of use and sharpening and vibrancy. However, just to let you know my next favorite are kohi noor which is Giaconda I have a set of 48 colours and they are absolutely gorgeous. I have creta colour also but haven’t used them much my least fave is pitt as I find them too hard but you are correct they are great for details
    Thank you for the video

    In fact, I mostly draw with the Carbothellos. But I also have Caran D Ache (I love the bright colors). I haven't had the problem you describe yet. But I also use Derwent, Pan Pastel and Faber Castell. Most of the time all brands are on the table, but I use Stabilo the most.

    Pitt is my go to! My wildlife portraits have a different style to your fine details, which I absolutely love admiring and I always love learning from you. For me, carbothello is too bright, but I’m going to pay closer attention to the texture of them next time!!!

    I started with pitt because it was a brand my grandma loved (she was an amazing artist). I fell in love with them. I just recently got a set of carbothello (based on jasons recommendation). and I finally see the difference in soft and hard. I love my carbothello. I have started using carbothello for the base layers and then using pitt for details. Absolutely love them both and how well they work together. However, still new to pastel so I haven't tried the other brands yet.

    My first set of pastel pencils was Conte and I still go back to them when I’m looking for certain colors. I’ve added Stabilo and Caran d'Ache but even after 40+ years I still find a need for them. Sharpening has always been a problem with Conte and Caran d'Ache. Never a problem with Stabilo. Thanks for your review..

    Hullo Jason, I am fairly new to pastels and I purchased several brands of pencils as I truly had never used any pastel pencils! I am a proud owner of full sets of the CarbOthello pencils! I have an older set of Derwent and several singles of Faber’s their white and black are very nice for those details too! I have heard some knocks against the newer thinner Derwent pencils, but I have not used even one pencil up! I use more CarbOthello pencils than any other. Thank you for sharing your opinions and knowledge with us!

    Hi Jason, your videos are so inspirational - I bought Carbothellos first and love them, followed by Pitt then Derwent and finally Conte a Paris - I don't think I need anymore!!! I agree with you and love the Carbothellos best!

  • @artistphilb
    @artistphilb 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I use some of all of those except Giaconda (haven't come across those) like Conte too, but they are very soft and sometimes keep breaking when you try to sharpen them, also use a few Derwent colours. mainly drawing figure or portrait, every brand has a different interpretation of skin tone, the lighter skin tones in Caran D'ache are nice, more yellow than pink.

  • @leerag

    My fav is Faber castell, why? Because it's the only brand I can buy individually and in sets where i live.. No carbothello, no caran dache, no Derwent etc. Finally your patreon channel has taught me so much and you're a superb teacher no wonder you came so highly recommended. Iam also one that recommends you now.
    Edit I located carbothello, not where I live but in another city. Look forward to trying these out

    I like all of them for the reasons you mentioned but - color permanence is SO IMPORTANT and Carbothello colors with good permanence are VERY limited as are Faber Castell’s Pitt pencils. I’ve not had any problems with Caran d’Ache being gritty but they are soft. But color permanence is not an issue.

    • @wildlifeartjm
      @wildlifeartjm  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      many companies just eliminate the colours that are not classed as highly permanent from their range. So they are not necessarily better.

    • @debrap5758
      @debrap5758 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@wildlifeartjm could be, but Carbothello and Faber Castell use a star system to show permanence rating. Check your sets to see the number of colors with less-than-great permanence…. 😬

    I agree with you. Pencils? Well I just got into the pastel pencil about 4 years ago-and Carbs were the first set I ever saved up and bought. A very good investment! AND-they have open stock, which is a big plus for me, as some of the colours I have used many many pencils from and had to re-order. Now, I have the Pitts, and all the others including the Caran, Derwent, Cretacolour, Gioconda etc. I think my least favorite right now is Gioconda-not the colours, they are wonderful-but because they are not available in open stock...well I would think twice about purchasing them again as if one or a few colours are used up I must then buy an entire set to replace them. My very first set of soft pastels (not pencils) was Grumbacher (way back in the early 1970's), the company is long since out of the pastel end of the art supply business, but I really loved the set (I was 13 and not sure actually what to do with them, but did experiment). My current soft pastel favorite is Rembrandt, Blue Earth, Faber, & Sennelier sticks. Pans are also a favorite for backgrounds, along with the soft pastels. I think from the soft pastels I would have to say the pans are fast becoming a favorite-once I learned to control them and not be so heavy handed they are quick and wonderful for backgrounds.

    I'd say for me the Carb Othello and Pitt are a tie. I also love some of the colors in the Derwent brand but they are harder to sharpen. Cretacolor has a good selection of grays. The Caran D'ache are a pain in the rear.

    Thank you Jason. I'll have to order these online as the only brand of pastel pencils in my local store are General's Pastel Chalk Pencils. Do you know anything about that brand? I don't think they're true pastel pencils as you can't seem to layer a lighter color on top of a darker color as I believe should be possible with true pastel pencils. Thanks for your advice!

    Maybe I have to give these another try. I bough a 24 set and I hated them so much because the reds were just revolting. There wasn't a single nice rich red, just various shades of fluorescent pink-red and orange-red.

    I had the scratchy chunks in General tinted charcoal pencils and regular charcoal pencils too. Makes them absolutely unusable for me.
    Carbothello was the first pastel pencil set I ever bought and I love them. Had them for years but the wooden box was awful. The foam inside melted and stuck to the pencils. What a mess.
