      Unfortunately on the federal tax form (1040) it does not separate the information for each tax filer for a married-filed joint return. You can find the division of parent 1 and parent 2 income on their w2 forms. If you are able to do the IRS Data Retrieval Tool the majority of the information is able to be answered directly from the IRS.

      Balilndah- We are glad to hear you found the video helpful. You can complete both the 22-23 FAFSA AND and 23-24, right now. I would encourage you to complete both since it sounds like your graduate program will cover both aid years. Just know you will use two different tax years. For the 22-23 you will use 2020 taxes and for the 23-24 you will use 2021 taxes.

      You will still need to include her information on your FAFSA if you are a dependent student (you couldn't answer "yes" to any of the dependency questions). What you will need to do is input all 0's for her social security number when asked on the form. Then if she filed taxes in the country she resides you would select for taxes that she filed a foreign tax return and manually convert the dollar amounts and include them on the FAFSA form.

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      Isaac-
      It depends on your citizenship status. If you are a U.S. Citizen then yes, you can complete the FAFSA and may be eligible for federal aid to assist you in paying for college.
      If you are a non-U.S. Citizen, generally, if you have a “green card” (in other words, if you are a permanent resident alien), you will be considered an “eligible noncitizen” and will be able to get federal student aid if you meet the other basic eligibility criteria. You are considered an “eligible noncitizen” if you fall into certain categories, such as the ones listed below:
      1. You are a U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swains Island) or U.S. permanent resident with a Form I-551, I-151, or I-551C (Permanent Resident Card, Resident Alien Card, or Alien Registration Receipt Card), also known as a "green card."
      2. You have an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) showing*
      “Refugee,”
      “Asylum Granted,”
      “Cuban-Haitian Entrant,”
      “Conditional Entrant” (valid only if issued before April 1, 1980), or
      “Parolee” (you must be paroled for at least one year, and you must be able to provide evidence from the USCIS that you are in the United States for other than a temporary purpose with the intention of becoming a U.S. citizen or permanent resident).
      3. You hold a T nonimmigrant status ("T-visa") (for victims of human trafficking) or your parent holds a T-1 nonimmigrant status. Your college or career school’s financial aid office will ask to see your visa and/or certification letter from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.*
      4. You are a “battered immigrant-qualified alien” who is a victim of abuse by your citizen or permanent resident spouse, or you are the child of a person designated as such under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).*
      5. You are a citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau. If this is the case, you may be eligible for only certain types of federal student aid:
      Citizens of the Republic of Palau are eligible for Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Federal Work-Study.
      Citizens of the Federal States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands are eligible for Federal Pell Grants only.
      *To qualify for federal student aid, certain eligible noncitizens must be able to provide evidence from the USCIS that they are in the United States for other than a temporary purpose with the intention of becoming a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
      If you don't have the above situation to be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen, then, no, you are not eligible for federal student aid.

    For the dependents of the parents part. Would my sister and I count towards being dependents; if we ourselves financially support ourselves?

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are speaking about the household size part of the FAFSA then you need to follow the instructions on the form. You would already be included if your the student completing the FAFSA, but your need to read through each of the "rules" for your sibling. If your parents provide at least 50% of her support, or if she was completing the FAFSA and answered no to all the dependency questions then she would be included in the household.
      If you are referencing whether you are dependent or independent and if you should exclude parent information. It really doesn't matter if you financially support yourselves, you have to be able to say "yes" to one of the dependency status questions to be considered independent. If you cannot then you are required to use parent information.

    Hello, in my last step of "sign and submit", I filled in the correct account number and password, but the above display does not match, what is the reason?

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      Miguel-
      Ideally, you will need to use the FSA (federal student aid) username and password for the student, and if a dependent for 1 parent. This will allow you to sign the FAFSA electronically which will process much faster. There is no account number with this, only a username you create and a password.
      An alternative method for submission of the FAFSA (and as you see on the video) is to use the Signature Page. This required printing, signing, and mailing the page into Federal Student Aid. This does allow you to submit the FAFSA but takes several weeks or longer for the application to process.

      Unfortunately sometimes the FAFSA does encounter technology glitches. This happens most often when the new application opens or if there is high traffic to the website. Our advice is to make sure you clear your browser cache, maybe use a different internet browser, and save and relog in and try at a different time.

    I usually answer ‘No’ to the parent assests questions but I did not get an option of Yes or No this time. Instead I got “Does it exceed $0.00?” Did I not get the Yes or No option for assets because I used the tax data retrieval form for IRS instead of filling manually? So, I’m supposed to combine what my parents have in their checking account, their saving account, and all the cash is their wallet? Does that include how much money is in their debit card? Only my father works so do i only use his information?

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      Kindree-
      Yes, this is a change this year and it is requiring more people to list their asset information. So you will need to combine the values of your parents cash/savings/checking accounts (yes, includes how much in their debt card account for BOTH parents if they are married as of today) AS OF TODAY to put that value in the first box. Then you will need to list the total of their investment's (not including retirement accounts, your house, or personal possessions-cars, boats, jewelry, etc.). For the investment category it may be easier to click the ? next to the question and read the list of what counts.

      Yes you do. Investments on the FAFSA include the following as they are valued AS OF THE DAY you submit the FAFSA: real estate (other than the home in which your parents live), Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) and Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) accounts for which your parents are the owner, stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, etc.
      The only investments not included are those associated with retirement and have a penalty to pull before age 65.

      The FAFSA has skip logic so depending on your age, degree you are seeking, or if you said yes to one of the dependency status questions you may not have parent information. If you are considered an independent student because you will be over the age of 24 in the 23-24 school year, working on a graduate degree, married, have children or depends who receive 50%+ support from you, active duty military, veteran, since the age 13 been in foster care or both parents deceased or ward of the court, emancipated minor, in a legal guardianship, or unaccompanied and homeless- if any of these are yes for you then you would not be required to provide parent information.

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are the student and an eligible non-citizen then you can use your A-number within the form for the citizenship question. But if you are a student and are undocumented then you cannot complete the FAFSA. You can read more about that here: studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/financial-aid-and-undocumented-students.pdf
      You need to work directly with your college's financial aid office to see if there is an alternative such as the paper FAFSA or a institution specific form for you to complete.

      If your parents marital status, as of the day you complete the FAFSA then you will still need to provide both parents financial information. If one of your parents worked and filed taxes in another country then you would need to still include that income. A foreign tax return may not have an "Adjusted Gross Income" line item. Convert all monetary units to U.S. dollars using the published exchange rate in effect for the date nearest to when you complete the FAFSA form. Since you are married the day you are completing the FAFSA both your income and information will be required on the form. If you were able to link to the IRS the complete the IRS Data Retrieval Tool than your 2021 tax information will be pulled over automatically. Where you can find the breakdown between yourself and your spouse for that question on the form is on your w2's or perhaps your state tax return. The federal 1040 does not breakdown individual tax payer income, it combines them so you won't be able to find that on the federal form.

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      You should complete the FAFSA for marital status "as of today" so as of the day you complete the FAFSA. It does not matter what is the filling status of your taxes since you have to use prior-prior year tax documents, and as you have experienced things change in two years.
      So this means you will need to include your current spouses tax information (from 2021) and income on your FAFSA. Because you all did not file together you will have to manually combine the values on your taxes and type them into the form. This takes a little extra time but the FAFSA guides you on which lines you need to reference on the 1040 and other tax forms.

      Since you live with your mother and she is who financial supported you the most in the past 12-months then you would include only her information on your FAFSA. You will indicate she did not file taxes and put $0 for income. Since she is not a citizen you will need to put all 0's for her social security number in the form and print a signature page and have her sign and mail it into FSA.
      Now, here are some details from FSA about undocumented students and parents options when completing the form: studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/financial-aid-and-undocumented-students.pdf

      It does not matter who files you on the taxes. You must use biological or adoptive parents if you are unable to answer yes to the dependency questions on the form. If you can say yes to one of those then you are independent and do not use parent information. But if you say no to all of them then you have to use your parents regardless if they claimed you on their taxes or not.

    Hii.
    I came to the USA on immigrant visa in March 2022 from Bangladesh. My mom started working(her first job) here from NOVEMBER 2022. And my dad didn't start his work here yet. As the fafsa form is asking for 2021 income tax return, can I add my dad's income here(of Bangladesh)? Since I'm not 24 yrs yet, I've to show my dependency on parent. Now, on which parent should I show my dependency as I already have my separate bank account and I'm also working currently?
    Also if I give didn't file tax and my application doesn't get accepted at the first year, an I reapply for it the next year using the same application?

      If your parent's marital status as of the day you complete the FAFSA is married, then you will need to provide both parents information on the FAFSA. If your parent doesn't live in the U.S., select "Foreign Country" from the dropdown menu for the question that asks about the parents' state of legal residence.
      If your parents live and file taxes in a foreign country and don’t file U.S. taxes, you’ll have the opportunity to indicate that they have filed their taxes. Then, when the FAFSA form asks whether your parents filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return, select “Yes."
      Convert the amounts on the foreign tax return into U.S. dollars as directed by the FAFSA help.
      Something to note is to make sure you have reviewed the eligibility for non-US Citizens US Federal Student Aid: studentaid.gov/understand-aid/eligibility/requirements/non-us-citizens
      You have the renew the FAFSA each year and it opens well in advance of the academic year you would be using it. The new application opens on Oct 1 of each year.

    1. if someone started a job in June of 2022, do they still put their income and assets even though the 22-23 FAFSA is based on the 2021 tax information
    2. If someone’s parents have a bank account that is joint and they also have separate bank accounts as well, does the dependent report the assets of all 3 accounts or just the joint one?
    3. If someone’s parents have a bank account that is joint and one parent also has a separate account for their business, does the dependent report the assets of the joint account and the business account combined?

      1. So that FAFSA flips between current (as of today for marital status and assets) and 2021 (for income- taxes, and untaxed income). So the answer to this question is no and yes. No when asked about income you would not put any income in 2022, you only answer about 2021 income. Yes when asked about assets because those are AS OF TODAY (the day you file the FAFSA).
      2. For parent assets, the first category they would report on all 3 accounts. ANY bank account (joint or personal or both) + cash + savings accounts. Remember, again, this is the values AS OF TODAY (the day you file the FAFSA).
      3. IF the parent's business has over 100 employees then the business account balance would be included in the 3rd question on assets (value as of today of parent's business or investment farms). BUT if the parent's business has LESS THAN 100 employees that account is not included anywhere on the FAFSA. So the only bank account that would be reported is the joint personal checking/saving account(s).
      NOTE--> For the FAFSA next year (2024-25) ALL business accounts regardless of the size of the business will be required to be reported on the FAFSA.

      Guliz-
      The FAFSA requires to always use two-year tax information IF you filed taxes for that year. This video is for the 23-24 academic year so it requires using 2021 taxes. Based on your comment it looks like you did not file taxes for 2021. So you would select the option "not going to file" which will then only ask you to list your wages/tips/salary for 2021 if you had any.
      If you tried the IRS Data Retrieval Tool it would not work because it would be looking for your 2021 taxes, which since you did not file will not be there to pull.
      BUT know that the college may require you to complete a 4506T IRS form which verifies you are not required to file taxes.

      The colleges and Federal Student Aid are the ones that have access to the information that you submit on the FAFSA. That is how they are able to link your FAFSA to your student account at the college and process your financial aid and determine what you may be eligible for.

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      The FAFSA has skip logic built into it. Don't worry you did it correctly if you selected "not going to file" for your parents tax filing status. It will just asking if your parent had any wages/tips/salary in that tax year, which if they did not and only received disability then you would put $0 there. The following question on the form will ask if you want to skip the remainder, which any time you are asked to skip in the FAFSA always do it. It is meant to make the form easier on you!
      One thing to note is if you are selected for verification you may be asked to provide a non-tax filer form for you parent. This is a 4506T tax form (found here: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf) that you would select option 7 (verification of non tax filing) and submit it for the 2021 tax year. What you are mailed back is what the colleges may ask for. Just want you to be prepared and know what this is.

      If you are unable to answer "yes" to any of the dependency question on the FAFSA then you will need to include your parent(s) information on your application and then depending on that then that affects the number in your household. Hopefully he will cooperate, I luckily had my son's Dad cooperate, but I did most of it until it came time to requiest his wife's w2, and it took a lot of diplomacy but my son's half sister wound up helping provide this. Please know some colleges and universities will not hear excuses and will want BOTH parents to apply. It is just that way. Best of luck to you and your son in his college!

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cynthia- There is no hard FAFSA deadline, it all depends on if you state of residence has a deadline for any state-aid application OR if the colleges your son is applying to has a FAFSA deadline. So the answer to that question is- it depends. BUT the general rule of thumb is the earlier the better to make sure you don't miss any important deadlines.
      As far as which parent to use on the FAFSA, per Federal Student Aid for students with divorces parents it is the parent who the student lived with more during the last 12 months. So based on your comment, your son lives with you then you should use your information on the FAFSA. (This is a great document from Federal Student Aid to help you understand this studentaid.gov/resources/fafsa-parent-text .)
      Note: If you are remarried AS OF TODAY (the day you complete the FAFSA) you must include your current spouse's financial information, regardless of your 2021 tax filing status.

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      Twin Flames Merge Inc- Actually no, Cynthia would not use her son's father information on the FAFSA. It is the parent the student has lived with the most during the last 12 months. The FAFSA does not include non-custodial parent. The CSS profile (a different financial aid application required by some colleges) does though include this information and that may be what you are thinking of when referencing requiring both parents to apply. But the FAFSA does NOT include non-custodial parent. You can read more details here about who is the parent on the FAFSA in this post from Federal Student Aid: studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/parent-info

    • @Get2College
      @Get2College ปีที่แล้ว

      The FAFSA this year will ask about assets up to $0. This is due to some changes on the formula. While it may not make a lot of sense when you complete it, you still have to answer the question. So if you get to that page for parent assets on the form and it asks if your parents assets exceed $0 as of today you will need to list out all the current values in their assets for the FAFSA (which can be found here: studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/fafsa-question-total-amount-of-parents-asset-net-worth-exceed-amount-listed ). Make sure you pay attention to this list because there are only certain things considered assets on the FAFSA that your parents may consider as assets in their day to day living.

You will have to have one of their physical signatures on the signature page you will need to print at the end of the FAFSA. Then you will need to mail it to the address listed on the signature page. As you can see in the video, it will ask for parent's marital status "as of today" which depending on how you answer this will determine if you need parent 2 information. If you mom has "Never Married" or "Divorced/Separated" or "Widowed" then parent 2 information is not required and would only use your mom's information.

      No. You always ONLY use biological or adoptive parent on the FAFSA regardless of who claims you on their taxes. The tax claiming does not matter. If you cannot say "yes" to any of the dependency question on the form then you are considered dependent and you must use biological/adoptive parent information.

      If you are trying to link your email to your FSA ID to log into the FAFSA form, there can be delays in receiving the confirmation code to verify. The code lasts for 15 minutes and you can request a replacement code if it exceeds the 15 minutes. Unfortunately sometimes connectivity can be an issue when getting access to linking your email.
      Currently you can skip linking your email to your FSA ID if you have your cell phone linked. BUT moving forward for the 24-25 FAFSA you will need to have an email linked to your FSA ID. So if you have the time it would be good to go ahead and wait for the verification code.

      Alexsandra-
      It looks like an IT-201 is a New York state tax document, not a federal tax document. The FAFSA, being that it is the Free Application for FEDERAL Student Aid is based on your 2021 federal taxes. While you can see in the video I reference the Mississippi tax documents, it is only as a short cut to find the parent wages/tips/salary since the federal tax return (1040) does not separate out this information.
      If you did not file a 2021 federal tax return (1040), because you were not required to. Then when asked about tax filing status you would select "Not Going To File".
