  • The Fuzhou Shipyard, established by the Qing Dynasty in 1866, faced financial challenges from the beginning, relying on government funding for its upkeep and struggling to generate economic returns. The shipyard's focus on building warships, limited production quantity, and lack of integration into the commercial sphere led to its decline after the First Sino-Japanese War, resulting in almost half a century passing without building a decent warship.
    The shipyard also faced challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled workers, as well as in maintaining related industries such as steel smelting and transportation, ultimately leading to its inability to save the collapsing structure in the turbulent late Qing Dynasty.
