  • "What could be more still life really, than a skull?"
Maggi Hambling joined during the installation of The Shape of Things: Still Life in Britain to share the story of her work 'Cuddling Skulls'.
In 1993, Maggi Hambling travelled to Mexico. She found that, far from the taboo, out-of-sight and behind-closed-doors attitude to death in Britain, in Mexican culture, ‘death seems to be a friend rather than an enemy. It’s so visibly celebrated’. Death is embraced as part of life. But death is also a necessary part of art.
You can visit the Cuddling Skulls on display in The Shape of Things: Still Life in Britain until 20 October 2024
