My brother and I made the trip up to Widgeon lake a few years back. Just getting there was a bit arduous at the end. We didn't have pack rafts so couldn't make the rest of the trip to the bomber. Ya'll must have been carrying some WEIGHT for that trip.
Yep, we were definitely carrying weight. One of my pack shoulder straps ripped and I had to hold it together with zip ties so it completely didn't rip off - that would have basically ended the trip right there.
Sheer determination, physical condition and stamina are all necessary to accomplish this challenging feat. The beauty you show us is one of the rewards for your hard work. I so appreciate your reverence at the crash site and the listing of the crew lost. Usually I can't help but have an emotional response to watching your videos. Well done Luke.
I tried the hike to widgeon as a 12 year old with my dad in a bad rainstorm, needless to say we didn't make it up. This video makes me inspired to get back there and give it another go.
Lived in the area all my life (Coquitlam) and have never been there. I know lots of friends who have been there, and the video pretty much sums it up. SPECTACULAR!!! May the the B25 flight crew RIP.
I’ve flown over the wreckage many times in the past 40 years. The engines are very visible from the air. Perhaps I have procrastinated too long, that is a serious hike. Thanks for taking me there!
I have never heard of mosquitos buzzing the god damned cameras, jesus man, the trail might be impressively tough but those mosquitoes -- that is where the real determination kicks in
Bugs *and* snow! Never thought those were possible at the same time. 😳 Beautiful scenery; respectful & well-researched visit to the crash site; dogs & humans were absolute troupers. Best hiking vid I've ever seen.
Woah, I've been friends with Alex all my life and been watching lifeofluke for awhile just because of his cool videos...Now they suddenly intersect. Awesome.
I showed a few of your videos to my friends and family and everybody agreed that you should have your own series on Netflix or a tv show , always enjoy the vids man keep it up !
Great hike Luke your channel is a treasure. Just got back from a remote fishing trip in Alberta, saw a big black bear and a pack of Timber Wolves fishing was terrible, but a 27 year old girl in the area where we were (Swan Hills) was attacked and killed by a black bear and a forestry worker was attacked by a Grizzly bear (also Swan Hills). We took Argos on tracks and stayed for three days. I have been fishing in the area for 40 years and have seen many black and grizzly bears over my visits. I have in the last 20 years or so started to always carry bear spray on my hip and an electric fence around my tent and a 12 gauge pump shot gun with slugs. But i travel heavy i don't carry everything on my back :) Argo, Quad , Snowmobile or horses. 45 years ago i did hike .
Wicked hike man! I had that exact same mission floating around the back of my mind for a couple years but never got around to doing it. I flew up to that crash sight by helicopter years ago, it’s pretty cool. But it doesn’t mean as much when you don’t earn it.
I love your videos, man! I live so close to all of this, but don't have the legs (nor the time) to enjoy it. You condense the experience in short and sweet videos, with excellent imagery and sound. Love them! Keep it up!
Great video with a sad story. I think the crew would appreciate the effort and respectful way you took to visit the site and shed light on their story and tragedy. I have flown by there countless times and was unaware of its history, so thank you for that. 🙏🏻🚁
Hmm, I don't recall seeing any, and in fact I looked around the summit pretty closely as I was keeping my eye out for unique triangular patterns on rocks, of which I saw none. And saw no binoculars either.
@@lifeofluke Peneplain no doubt has had a few visitors over the 14 years since, but I had to ask. It would have been fun to return them to their original owner after all these years. Thanks much for responding.
Luke. Another outstanding adventure and outstanding video to go with it. These keep getting better and better. Every time I watch one I get hyped to get out there and get after it myself. Thanks!
Luke another amazing adventure!! Im glad that you said not to take suvinours from the crash site because its a memorial. I can't beleave there is bugs way up there on the peak. Keep your adventures coming!!!! I gave you some more shout outs. I hope its helping your channel, by the numbers I see it looks like its working. Stay safe!!
Another amazing adventure Luke, your video work and explores continue to inspire me. Let me just say that I truly appreciate your extensive work and time that you put into your videos, excellent research and videography. We have had a real bummer of a Summer here in Montana with smoke and fires, one of the worst seasons I've experienced. Visibility and air quality is extremely poor to say the least. I have not gotten the opportunity to get out into the high country as I had intended to this Summer due to the fire conditions. I was really hoping to capture some drone footage from a variety of high elevation mountain peaks. You live in an amazing place and I am glad to see that you make an effort to enjoy it to the fullest. Great video shots of your K-9 companion as well. Scooter with the Rough Riders.
Thanks Scooter! I feel for all the places that are socked in with smoke, and fortunate to have had these clear skies for our trip. Stay positive and things will get better!
God your videos are just absolutely stunning. I'm hoping to move to British Columbia next year after I finish my forestry degree (UK) and your videos get me so hyped, the scale of the wilderness out there just absolutely dwarfs the UK in terms of scale and beauty.
That bugs me too. Seeing rubbish left behind by pigs is so infuriating. I go XC MTBing and the amount of dumped litter, household rubbish and burnt out cars and 4x4s is incredible. Not in anyway referencing the crash site as that is a unintentional tragedy. That is some really beautiful wilderness you get to experiance and nicely documented Luke.
So i just saw a Srava report from a couple guys i follow i had no idea this was here i spend more time on the Eagle side , but want to do and out and back from Burke one day but im thinking that it would be a two day trip probably a bit too much from the gun range for one day
We’ve a far more easily accessed but similar site on mt. Bolduc in lk. Cowichan on the island. Though the 6 airmen remain buried on the hill. Them & their Lockheed Ventura lost in 1944. Erie places these.
That was a big trip. One thing, there are some issues with sound. I watch this on PC with big wide-spectrum speakers, so for example 7:00 sounds like my neighbours are cranking a big diesel engine in their bedroom.
Ya that's the wind noise causing vibration in the microphone. It's constantly difficult to battle wind noise and also try to capture audio. I also don't have an entire sound team at my disposal
@@lifeofluke I can imagine how hard is to make that good quality videos and this wind noise is not a big thing, just wanted to mention. Some ppl using a wireless, but this is to do with additional gear to remember to charge battery and stuff.
I stumbled upon your video hiking the howe sound crest trail. I accomplished it twice because of your video. Now I wanna do this hike up widgeon lake this summer. Just one question is it more difficult than the HSCT? Thanks
Brutal looking trail, screw that.

My thoughts exactly.
You know it, Pete! Hard work pays off.
Incredible camera work and an epic adventure, you guys must have had a blast. Thanks for producing this trip report and sharing!
It was a challenge, and a ton of fun to do, thanks Mike!

Thank you so much... I was enthralled. Respect to those 5 men who died. Mostly, for your respect of the site.
Thanks Wendy!
Even among your usually impressive trips, this one is special. Well-done piece with a nice respectful touch.
Thanks Cody!
Bugs look like nice company. Aerial shot at 12:55 is gold.
I have never heard of mosquitos buzzing the god damned cameras, jesus man, the trail might be impressively tough but those mosquitoes -- that is where the real determination kicks in
Yep, the bugs are ferocious up there - any breathing body (or camera) is a target
One of your best vids so far Luke and very respectful of the people who died in the tragedy.
Great work. It was inspired. Thank you.
Excellent video, very well made, wow, it is majestic in BC, thank you for that 😁🙏🙋
thoughtful and respectful of the pilots. thank you. reminds me of Strachan trail
HOLY SHIT, I've been there a few times in a heli and the pilot assured us that no one hiked up there ever, it's just too gnarly... way to go.
where there's a will, there's a way
This a cool look at the area that has been shown by both Pilot Yellow, and Bradley Freisen. These guys sure worked hard for the views, What a hike !

the bugs were outta control, so many
I find myself checking and checking for these videos to come out and i know why, they are always a first class show, thanks very much.

Awesome video. I can't wait for Canada to open up to me.
A cousin of mine made that hike in the 70's, told me it was a two and a half day trip and it was brutal. Never went back.
Hi Luke,
Nice work. Any sign of a brand new pair of binoculars that were left on the summit of Peneplain Peak back in 2009?
Hmm, I don't recall seeing any, and in fact I looked around the summit pretty closely as I was keeping my eye out for unique triangular patterns on rocks, of which I saw none. And saw no binoculars either.

The triangular rock patterns are SW of the crash site along the way to the alpine lake in that area.

Good hike and nice video !
Lots of bears in that area..... Surprised you didn't see any.
just bear tracks!
Most of the bears are further down in the meadows near the "Secret Evil Compound" or further to Minnekhada near the berry farms at this time of year.
Another stunner, Luke and Nina. Give that good girl a well deserved belly rub.
