- "Strange fits of passion have I known" is a ballad by William Wordsworth and was composed in 1798 during his brief stay in Germany. The poem was first published in the second edition of Lyrical Ballads (1800). The poem has seven stanzas following the rhyme scheme of ABAB. The poem revolves round the themes of nature, love, fear and death.
This is the first poem among the "Lucy poems" dedicated to a character named Lucy. The "Lucy poems" refer to a series of five poems written by William Wordsworth, all dedicated to Lucy. Although they are presented as a series in modern anthologies, Wordsworth did not conceive of them as a group, nor did he seek to publish the poems in sequence.
