It’s the chimurenga sound, a genre that has become synonymous with Mapfumo’s music due to his leading role in promoting the sound but is not necessarily exclusive to him. Remember Chimurenga is based on the musical notation of a traditional instrument the mbira which is common amongst the Shona tribes of Zimbabwe
Mbira sound on guitar was brought into his band by session musicians who were improvising electric guitar chords to suit local tastes, even Mapfumo acknowledges that fact whenever he is discussing the sound’s origins
