Hello Shaun, buying the 1902 Matte and getting a PF61 is a great result. The 1902 Matte proofs seem to grade in the low 60s, probably partly due to original packaging. I have a US one dollar in for grading at the moment and fingers crossed it straight grades. Kevin
A lot of people focus on the grade of a coin which is obviously very important when it comes to graded coins but as you stated it helps preserve them and last but not least it guarantees they are genuine and with so many fakes on the market it's also good to get them graded from that point of view too
I wholeheartedly agree, history should be preserved. I recently picked up an 1851 gold dollar as well, unfortunately, this one was holed. It was supposedly dug out of a Virgina (Civil War) battle field. Since it’s holed it will be placed into a bezel, for my daughter the history major who wanted to save this coins history.
AU58 is a very acceptable grade and often coins awarded this grade have better eye appeal when compared to some lower MS graded coins. So don't be too disappointed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Looking the photos on NGC it is clear there is wear more than just on the high points. On the reverse for example the reigns on the neck are noticeably worn and the stirrup is missing. The obverse exhibits noticeable wear across the hair that I consider to be greater than just the high spots. Together there is evidence of circulation and I feel for this reason your coin was graded AU and 58 grade rather than an uncirculated grade MS. Yes, as a dealer the financial consequences for you are known by us all.
@shaunoliver1703 I have been aware of your content for approximately 2-3 years.. I do love to binge watch numismatics 😁 in fact it is a dream of mine to start a wold gold 🪙 collection after finishing a decent representation of American 🪙age.... thanks for the content, happy holidays from Pennsylvania 😎
Yours arrived back from Numi same day as mine. I think your doubles achieved really nice grades and I don't blame you for grading American pre-33's. So do I. If anything, just to confirm they're not fakes - there's an ocean of them out there.
Thanks Shaun🙆♂️, never held a double sovereign, but the look pretty impressive 🙆♂️
They are a weird coin to own - most people prefer the full or the quint - I feel they often get overlooked myself.

I do agree with this
I thought that 1902 double was a matte proof when you first showed it. Glad it worked out well for you 👍🏼
I wasn't convinced - Its not the most amazing grade but I did well on it

It certainly needs to be preserved - I dont like historic coins going to the pot - its a crying shame.
Also a nice score on the proof 👏
Got lucky on that one for sure.

This I agree with with on a personal level - On a professional level it does hinder the coin in terms of financial uplift. Its always a balance beam.

its certainly something a bit different.
nice coins enjoy your coffee
I love a god coffee! Thanks for the continued support.
I agree Shaun history shouldn't be melted!
I think it is criminal to melt history just because its not perfect.
I 👀 gold so I *click* 😁
i have over 700 videos with maybe 500 gold videos - fill your boots and welcome to the channel :D

I don't grade with Numi so just a coincidence on that one. The pre33 is a nightmare!
❤
:D
I thought the 1928p would have been MS62
I had it down as MS as well - Can't win them all
Not sure if it's your lighting but that 1902 does not look Matte at all, looks more nice MS like you say.
I didnt think it was a Matte proof myself :)
