This was more "Robbie Vincent" than "Greg Edwards." Robbie was more Jazz Funk and Jazz Fusion. Greg went for the disco-soul floorfillers. Robbie was mid-Saturday groove. Greg got you ready to go out on Saturday evenings!
Not just Brit Funk, anywhere on the planet this number sounds as though it was recorded yesterday not forty years ago. The problem with that argument is they don't do the good stuff like this today.
So nice, this reminds me of Ubiquity and Blackbyrds. Memories of chilling in London in the early 90s, and watching Roy Ayers, The Brecker Brothers, Courtney Pine, Bheki Mseleku and Al Jarreau in Alexandra Park.
Its a London thang! LOTW paying homage to the city of their birth London town, this excellent track really symbolises what the Brit Funk era was all about, from the opening vibes led intro, then the horns, breezy melody with the vocals taking you through Regents Park & Trafalgar Sq, by now your hooked cos i am!
US contractor working here in the UK, listening to Jazz FM where they play this beautiful music daily. Can you send me a link to your best Greatest hits album? Thank you in advance.
I was SOOOO incredibly happy when I found this on TH-cam. I must have played it a hundred times. A timeless masterpiece. Just STUNNING. PURE CLASS. HUGE thanks for posting and for making this world a better place, 😘😘
Listened to this in the 80s in Cape Town South Africa, went to live in London from 2003 to 2007 now back in CT and listening to it in 2021. What a song what a city
I found out about you guys by accident, and I've kept up with you since. Love this cut, among others in your stable. Keep shining LOTW, us across the pond, we dig your funk. Peace.
This was very popular at the Soul Weekenders I remember, certainly Caister. So good to hear this again I can't believe it is over 30 years old now! I used to play this when DJ-ing in the early 80s. Had my white label promo copy stolen at 'Henrys' in Burnham Beeches! Replaced the next day with a copy from Groove Records in Soho.
Should have been the theme for London 3rd Olympics. New York, Chicago, LA and Japan, Munich, Paris dont forget Amsterdam. Makes no difference where yor from, it just a party everyone can come!
Heh lads-was there more than once at the Lyceum-great times! Yes lets add Caister, the Goldmine etc -does it really matter? Great song, great history and so glad what we call and remember as jazz funk lives on.
EXCELLENT post - was trying to find the right words, then I read yours. NO other words necessary.... Except...... perhaps? "Friday Night At The Lyceum.....!" Nuff Said.
I Saw Light of The World I think it was 1979 at East Herts College and thought they were great. If you like Light of The World check out the Inversions they were also great.
Yes, 1980. Check out JFSR (internet radio) who play LOTW often and more classic jazz-funk. New album due out in 2013... May also be touring in Jan/Feb of 2013 so check out the the LOTW website for more info

one of the most overlooked and positive tunes about London ever. how can you not love that vibraphone and guitar combo? massively underrated
Cleveland Eton Birmingham train also not bad very funky
One of the few songs that instantly take me back to the good times in 1980s SE London:Deptford, Peckham, not forgetting the West End!......
Same here….but SW London…Brixton, Streatham and West End, of course! 🙂👍🏽
Purley all dayers and awaydays for Caster weekends, Robbie Vincent, Chris Hill, Greig Edwards and the Funk Mafia

Brilliant track and great memories. It was great to meet Gee and his wife last Sunday at Campsoul Music Festival near Didcot.
Won this disc from Greg Edwards for "getting on down and having a good time" at a disco at Silvermere GC c.1980/81. Those were the days!
Man this is a smooth song!! I'm not from London, but who cares? Great music is great music!!!!, and this is GREAT!!!!💕💕
Should have been the theme for the 2012 London Olympics.
So true
They missed a trick there
Always gives me goosebumps the best tune there is to describe London town
Still going strong, new album due out in 2013
US contractor working here in the UK, listening to Jazz FM where they play this beautiful music daily. Can you send me a link to your best Greatest hits album? Thank you in advance.
I was a spotty teenager in the 80s ... enjoying this in my early 50s👍
Born bred and proud to be a LONDONER 😎😎😎

So many great memories attached to this song and era. I remember picking this up from Bluebird Records.
Picking up all the rare limited editions we missed from Notting Hill tape exchange through the 90's

British jazz soul funk, fusion talent...
Feels like a London response to Harlem River Drive. Exceptional tune.
Brilliant song - takes me back 🎶
Still playing this regular all those years later. Timeless Classic!! Born in London live in Spain, miss it when I hear this. Sweet sweet music.

I found out about you guys by accident, and I've kept up with you since. Love this cut, among others in your stable. Keep shining LOTW, us across the pond, we dig your funk. Peace.
Victor Feldman on Vibes for me gives this the coolness that it will always be remembered for, growing up a major tune and album for me.Fantastic!

Hey! Henry's! I was there man but never (sadly) made it to Caister. Always wanted to go to a soul weekender. Not sure the knees would take it now!!!

Might this have among others inspired the work of Sade Adu, Stuart Mathewman, and Andy Hale on their 'Nothing Can Come Between Us' for Sade?
最高!
