Thank you so much!!! I own a 1945 beauty and she has a saddle valve fitting and you showed me EXACTLY what I was hoping for. The poor young guy at the hardware told me to call a plumber, he’d never seen a part like that 😉🤣 Thanks again, off to fix my saddle valve👏🏻
Good video, but problem I see is that after you replaced the valve, you didn't turn the main supply on before you connected the flexible copper. You may have replaced the broken handle, but you don't know if the new valve is actually sealing the hole made be the old valve. If the part that pieces the fixed copper is slightly smaller in size than the old part, it will no longer allow you to entirely turn off the water flow to the refrigerator. Everything may have worked as planned, but without performing that test, you can't be sure that the valve is actually working as a shut-off valve, and it may now just be a tee with a useless knob.
Thanks for your video. It allowed me to understand how the valve works. I was just tightening piercing the pipe, and I was not sure why I didn't get any water. The reason of course was that I needed to backtrack the needle so the water could flow.
Hi I hate those type of connectors. whenever I come across one I take it out and replace it with a tee joint with a cutoff valve, you don't lose any water pressure that way and you don't risk that little bit of copper that was cut going down the pipe and getting into another cutoff or somewhere else and causing damage.
Yeah, I do the same. I also sweat on a threaded nippe and use a quarter turn with threads. That way I can replace the shutoff valve if needed at a later time without sweating on another. Just wrench it on. Adds about $5 to the cost.
For those watching, if you would have put the vice grips on what was left of the valve stem, you should have been able to unscrew it and remove the old valve assembly. Then maybe you could have just screwed the new one into it. Plus as others have said, did you turn the main water back on when checking to see if it was actually working?
I hate those things, they're unreliable and slow flow. I sweat in a 1/2" T and 1/4 turn valve. I put on an adapter and finally the line. Flows great and ready to deal with. yeah it costs a little more, but zero problems.
I feel your pain about the valve but folks might keep in mind that we are creating ice here not running a power washer. The low flow doesn't hurt anything or make you wait unduly for ice.
For ice I agree. However, it was a difference from 12 seconds to fill my glass to ~4 seconds. I used the same copper line that I had run when I had that quick pinch valve. When the filter has to be replaced, it goes to 8 seconds, I replace it and back down again. My wife realizes it too when she fills the coffee pot at night to get it ready for the next morning. Depending, I will also sweat a threaded nipple on and use a threaded quarter turn valve. That way if I ever have a problem with the valve in the future, I can just wrench on another. I agree what I do with my plumbing on all the fixtures may be overkill for most, I just prefer to do what works best. Also, someone used one of those quick taps on the 3/4" line going to the line going into the water heater to the humidifier. I couldn't close the tape so I could clean the humidifier. I wanted to install a shutoff valve and T for the humidifier to the water heater, so I cut out that portion where the quick tap was for the shutoff and T.. When I looked through the section of pipe where the tap was, there was so much build up that half the pipe was blacked. Not sure if it was buildup of corrosion or particles, but that wasn't helping any. Anyway, I'm not a pro, just a regular guy not wanting to take the quick way out and do the best I can do.
I don’t understand. Are you able to shut the water to the freezer or ice maker off for repair? What did you do? I tall a new saddle valve?I have the same problem. My ice maker is leaking and has to be replaced. I wanted to shut the water to freezer but was unable to. What is the solution without turning the cold water valve off?
Michael L Bliss packing could b loose or u could have the same issue im having with sediment from the water (iron, calcium, mineral solvents) plugging the line after some time. By u turning the valve open/close like that ur agitating whatever is in there sometimes causing it to seal incorrectly. Just normal wear tear from city or well water
I never use those saddle valves plus they are not up to code and if you have a insurace claim because of a leak due to that saddle valve insurance will deny your claim. all that time you took to repalce (includding over tighting yes there such thing in over tighting those) you could of solder a T and install an angle stop. or if you cant solder use compression T.

They’re not code anymore, but lots of old houses still have them.
Can you turn off the saddle valve to cut water supply to the fridge? My saddle valve won’t turn water off completely.

Thanks so much! I was looking for how to change the valve and just tightening the nut on the valve fixed it! Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful

I tightened the valve all the way ,I was still getting water to fridge
This exactly what I needed to understand. Perfect! Thanks very much!
My pleasure
Don't ever use a saddle value they are just a disaster waiting to happen.
and illegal

Thank you. Will I be able to turn water to the ice maker off with a T-valve without turning cold water valve off? Just the water line to fridge
@dexsirotger7342 Yes, that’s the point of that valve.
Flathead screws are the bane of any DIYer reaching a high up spot >.

It was working fine when I left. Then Ray sold the house a year later and it was still fine.

You need to turn the whole house water off to fix the valve.
lol how to fix the problem, with the problem! GREAT!
can I turn off the sattle valve to swap refrigerator.. I don't know where my main line is located...
+Bruce Lee Yes, that's the primary purpose of the saddle valve.
My saddle valve won’t turn off water to fridge. Water just keep coming. It reduced the water flow but not completely.
Why wouldn't you tee off and Add a shut off valve with a new plastic hose??
Why does my saddle valve leak when I turn it off , but does not leak when it's fully open??

My saddle valve won’t stop water to refrigerator. Is it broken?
