As a drummer since 16 years of age in 1983 I can assure you that the song In My Time of dying is the hardest Led Zeppelin song to play on the drums.
One of the most recognizable and iconic guitar riffs of all time. A true classic.

There is a reason John Bonham is considered one of the greatest Rock/ blues drummers. His ability to lay back and keep the beat behind the riff, and simultaneously bring power into the slow groove was ground breaking at the time.

One of the greatest blues songs ever written is “since I’ve been loving you” by zeppelin. They were so creative and diversified and original it can be a bit overwhelming when you first get into them. Arguably the greatest band ever.
Led Zeppelin are much more than your average blues rock band. A dive into their discography is like opening a chocolate box full of musical styles and influences all crafted by talented musicians at the top of their game.

Such a slippery, heavy groove. Legendary for being difficult to play (as Slash attests to), because the guitar riff goes into a different time signature, while the drums stay in 4/4. Outro solo is one of my favorites ever, so hooky, yet so raw...
I have always felt that that guitar lead-in had a recorded f-up towards the end there, is that the change in time signatures? , because it has always felt jarring to me...
@@tonyfranco5218 I think they meant for it to be jarring. The changing in time signatures is what makes it feel a bit floaty sometimes but makes it feel like locking in even more when they end up together again :)
Bonham also plays well behind the beat on those parts adding another layer of complexity.
This was the first song my old rock band in school ever played. Listening back to the original, I have NO idea why we thought we could play it!
This is one of those songs where the bass follows the guitar instead of staying in the pocket with Bonham. Bonham makes it work. He can handle the backbeat by himself.
Pretty sure Page fluctuates between 9/8 and moves a half step to 10/8 (5/4) whilst Bonham sticks with 4/4, and then they come together for a punch on the cymbal.

As a white guy in 1977 i had two good friends in high school that were black. And we listened everything from Earth Wind and Fire. To progressive jazz like Return to Forever with Staley Clark, Chick Coria. And Al di meola. But Zeppelin was there favorite band in the world and it was mine also. And i saw them live twice in 77. And one of those times were with my two black friends. And when i think about those two guys all these years later. They remind me of the two of you. Zeppelin is one of the best bands to ever exist.
Most of the song is in 4/4 but during the transition Bonham continues the 4/4 while Jones and Page are playing 5/4, which causes a tension in the groove that at the time was unique for LZ in Rock music. It's something you hear a lot more of in Jazz.
The song is in 7/8 time. Bonham plays a 4/4 groove the entire song.

When the Levy breaks
Some of Zeppelin’s most underrated songs imo are “Hey Hey What can I do” and “The Wanton Song’. Both are very different from each other but are incredibly fun to listen to.
I used the former on a short skate video I made in high school. I quickly learned about copyright claims lol.
You might be the only person I’ve ever seen shout out “Hey Hey What Can I Do?” Such an underrated track.
The Wanton song is phenomenal. Love Jimmy and Bonzos work on that song. They are all such phenomenal musicians. John Paul Jones work on the keys are great. I can honestly say everything I have hear from this band is gold. I have been listening to them along with the Beatles for over 40 yrs. Zep and the Beatles are my Top two bands
The British were listening to Blues before us and they had their interpretation and changed our music forever. Remember they were very young and doing something that had never been done. Tough being one of the first.
I HIGHLY recommend Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain. Groovy as hell.

He writes so much. He was the most diverse talent wise. Love his guitar playing on "going to california"

"Experimental Blues", is a good analysis here. The band were a melting pot of blues and soul influences that under the 4 of them playing and amplifying it all together created lots of different things that formed the templates of Heavy rock itself.
"The Ocean" on Houses of the Holy (album version) is one of Led Zeppelin's best songs for someone who just wants to hear them rock and not do an experimental thing, although it has a little bit of a different section at the end.
Indeed, the main riff has a grove feel ina 7/8 time measure then staight groove in 4/4 during the verse. Followed in the end with a swing feel with doo-wop vocals.
Working on learning that song now. I learned the main riff to this song by ear dicking around 1 day. Still haven't learned the rest lol.

The list is loooong of great Led Zeppelin tunes. “Since I’ve been loving you” (studio version) is at the pinnacle of all of them.
The studio version is so weak. Try the 'badge holders version from '77

I agree with the original post. I appreciate the spontaneity and energy of the live tracks but the studio version is fabulous and the sound quality is far, far superior. 45 year old live recordings have horrendous sound quality and suffer greatly in dynamics as a result. Those are (typically) for hardcore fans that want to mix it up; they’re not what you use to introduce someone to a song that has major dynamic shifts.
Side note, this is also my favorite Zep tune to play on guitar.
@@doofinator4285 Personally, I prefer the original recording than most live versions. It’s what the artist had in mind once they recorded it, mixed it, soundproofed it and decided to release it. There are a few exceptions, like anything in “Frampton Comes Alive” and several Cheap Trick’s songs in “Live in Budokan”. Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” was recorded as if it were live, but it was not, and it came out perfect.

Zeppelin is groovy because they appreciated and digested early black blues and soul. Rock bands today have lost that, " i don't know what I've been told, today's rock bands ain't got no soul"!!

@@wallhome464 love them both, don't get me wrong, but i find Zeppelin too technical at points and actually prefer their blues. AC/DC's simplicity though is ultra effective, and if you count in their whole posture, especially with Scot makes the ultimate RnR experience. totally different, both landmarks, comes down to taste.

Just like great baseball players don't hit a homerun every time at bat. Neither do bands. Even the greats.

Interesting that you guys would say that about Robert’s “convincingness” as a blues singer. I grew up on blues as well way before bands like this opened the doors to me on rock. But of all the white British blues rock bands, to me Robert was one of the only ones that had that level of soul to me. I always considered him to be the male equivalent of Janis Joplin.
Also, saying “more of this please” with zeppelin is kinda tricky. Every single track of theirs has a different feel and atmosphere. No two songs are alike.
Heartbreaker is another one that would fit into what they're talking about here. They have a good handful of groovy tracks.
I agree on the variety and diversity of Zeppelin's music. To me, that's a big part of the greatness of the band. They *never* did just one thing, musically, and they did it *all* well. I love a softer, slower track like "The Rain Song," just as much as the loud, heavy songs like "Black Dog." On white British blues singers, I do love Robert Plant, but Steve Marriot of Humble Pie is also up there and *so* soulful!

Since I've been loving you is an incredible Led Zepplin blues song, the guitar solo is the bluesiest guitar solo I've ever heard

The Wanton Song is probably their most underrated track. It is so good.
Story goes: while recording this album/track-a stray (black) dog was hanging around the studio….& the rest is history.

Led Zeppelin was so versatile, they have a lot of songs that have a driving groove element but they also could cover so many other genres of music of the time.

Led Zeppelin's popularity and appeal comes from the fact that they DO have such a wide variety of genres in their catalog.
Keep in mind, in The 1960s and 1970s, folk music was one of THE most popular forms of music with the hippie generation.
The harder, heavier music is what drew me to Led Zeppelin and kept me around. As I heard more of their music, I really came to appreciate all of their music, especially the extremely bluesy music, like "Since I've Been Loving You" or "Tea For One". Then you have an extremely heavy, blues song in "How Many More Times", with that awesome bass guitar intro.
One thing about Led Zeppelin is that they are NOT repetitive.

yeah even as a drummer I never got it for decades, until I finally sat down with the drum chart and figured out where his lead-in to the 4/4 meter was, lol.
I had a similar problem with Spirits in the Material World by the Police... the hi-hat accented + synth motif starts on the UP beat of the 1 of each measure (ska style), so it always threw me off by an eigth note until the chorus comes in with 4 on the floor. I always grimace my face concentrating on counting the correct quarter notes during the verses.
The only way I finally got it right was by listening to the Tony Levin Band live instrumental of Black Dog, it was slowed down and all the Bonham extra hits weren’t in. Easier to follow. Zep’s How the West Was Won has the live version that is also a bit easier to follow.
Now you need to check out the album from Led Zeppelin called presence either nobody's fault but mine or Achilles Last Stand are both killer songs

I love that song because I imagine Jimmy Paige loves it, his favorite song is The Rumble and Down by the Seaside has a really similar guitar reverb/vibrato so I imagjne he has fun playing it.

Drummer is playing in a way that gets out of time and back in time with what the rest of the band is doing. They could play this live but they usually changed it a little to make it easier to play.
In jazz there is something called a turnaround. This song has a turnaround but the drummer plays like there isn't. It can throw your head a little for a loop. It's one of those songs where your head wants to be-bop, but the drummer is making it bop-bop.
The ocean- Led Zeppelin he’s across the ocean away from his family on tour he says in the song “ singing all my songs to the girl who won my heart , she is only 3 years old that’s a real fine way to start.” Talking about his daughter
Hey Hey What Can I Do? is an amazing one that seems to have gained some real popularity over the last 10 years
"Dancin' Days" is such a classic, easy to listen to and jam to. I also loved the Stone Temple Pilots version as well. Just a good song all around. "The Battle of Evermore" is also fantastic, and Heart made it even better, their rendition hits hard.

Do “Bring it on home”, it’s a fkin JAM. Also highly recommend “How many more times” which predated Black Sabbath but sums up their signature sound in one song.
"How Many More Times" summed up Sabbath's sound? Nope. It's a heavy blues rock song a la Cream, sure, but it doesn't have the malice and darkness that tipped Sabbath into full-on metal and doesn't come anywhere close to summing them up.

@@aldersmoke1 I changed my post from saying “entire” to “signature”. Obviously the song doesn’t cover everything but it does sum up the majority of their signature style. It has a big heavy hitting main riff and you need to listen to it again if you think it doesn’t have a looming dark feel to it during the bridge. It goes quiet and eerie during “I was a young man I couldn’t resist.” And “Call me the hunter, that’s my name”. I don’t think Iommi would have the sound he had without this first Led Zeppelin Album. Paranoid is literally stolen from Dazed and Confused, another song with a looming doom and gloom feel to it, maybe not lyrically, but definitely musically.

Zeppelin were many different colors on the palette of music. They were so diverse...Blues, Hard Rock, Metal, Folk, Country, and World Music styles were their calling card.

Glad you're into No Quarter, I think it's one of the hidden gems of Zep and doesn't get enough love (except maybe by musicians). Definitely catch a listen to the Song remains the same version of it, the leads are absolutely super on that (personally prefer the album to the movie, but if you're into it, listen to both!)
A black dog in a dream symbolizes someone around you who may be trouble. Generally seen as a bad omen or at least a warning. The girl has little flags that he keeps noticing is my interpretation.
