When I see gold it usually has a strange shining, the way it reflects light is unique, it almost feels like it has an aura, like it shines and reflects light in the entirety of its dimensions. Almost like it always has a patina, but doesnt feel or look oily. Just pure shine This is how I recognize gold
Glad you included the star, as I think a lot of people don't realize that lower karat gold can tarnish since pure gold doesn't. I have even seen real 10k gold with a bit of verdigris looking tarnish. That and white gold seem to get missed by the local thrift stores more than untarnished yellow gold. Gold vermeil, gold fill over sterling etc. I notice seem to tarnish a lot like silver in comparison to solid gold, too, though not sure if that's a real rule or just my experience.
Pay attention the settings, prongs, clasps, and types of stones. Gold also has a very distinct silky smooth satin feel with a nice weight. I do very well picking and even have got good at online auctions of telling what is gold and what isn't. My success rate is about at 90% in buying for gold. It's really in the details. Gold does not have a high brassy finish its actually dull compared gold plate and has a luster to it you can't replicate. Once you figure out all of this it becomes second nature.
I got a real 4.5 total carat diamond ring picking. Marks were on outside of shank, French platinum marks, for about $20.00. It appraised for $30,000.00. I've been picking gold a long time and I know exactly what you mean. Gold has that certain look. The weight, feel, luster and construction are huge indicators. I can usually spot it a mile away when others pass it by. I've even trained my eye on internet auctions to look for telltale signs the piece is gold even when not marked. Got some FABULOUS deals like that. You just have to really train your eye and study a lot of pieces to get the knack for it.
So helpful, I noticed that when real gold is put under lights, instead of being a blinding whiteish color when it shines, it has a more yellow tint to it when it shines, also the clasps.
So I just inherited a shit ton of jewelry from someone who was a jeweler. I had no idea what I was doing looking over this stuff at first. Some of it felt heavy and looked very well made so I started doing research. Found tons of 14k and 18k labeled gold and probably 50 necklaces of real pearls in excellent condition as well as pure silver clasps. I have like 30 or 40 other pieces of that aren’t labeled but it is heavy and looked beautiful like gold so I have a feeling I’ve hit the jackpot. Now I’ve got to figure out the cheapest way to test it.
Thanks for the video! I used to go to yard sales and auctions with my dad and was usually bored and sick of it. One time I recall finding a coin with a 14k pendant around it. It was at a bottom of a basket of cologne but I saw something shiny. It was only $.25 and was worth $80 in scrap. One good thing is to have a smartphone too. It pays for itself for sure!
Honestly this video helped me more than most. I found a gold necklace in a dryer I bought when I was cleaning it out and I'm now 90% sure its gold now. Might start picking haha
See Monotonic Gold. The properties in Gold have a vast poyential range of Energy Potentials that are not in Mainstream textbooks, save possibly Physics. It literally can be heated in the Monotonic state and it leaves this Dimension, returns upon cooling. The studies are most amazing.

Try an estate sale, with bags of fake jewelry for $5. Just a regular sandwich bag, maybe 1200-1500 grams. There were silver plated, gold plated, gold filled, carrot gold and silver in them. Most of it was gold filled. So just over 8200 grams not counting the silver utensils and platters and I spent $30 for the 6 bags. Just the gold plated will more than pay buying everything and the chemicals needed to refine everything.
Thanks! Just started learning about gold testing. The fake one I immediately thought was real because it looked so shiny, and the oval piece I thought was fake because it looked tarnished. Magnets thankfully don't lie though. Gotta get my hands on some real gold now to learn the texture.
Thank you for all these tips you can provide. I will definitely take your advice and study the look of my gold pieces so I have a better feel for what I am seeing when I go out to pick.
A good way to show people how to see the life in gold is to show Even without light gold will still shine, so the idea is to remove it from the light an see if it still has a shine. If it's fool's Gold, it will look dull an lifeless if it's gold the it will still have a brightness to it even in the shadows, I've been a prospector for almost 5 years now an learnt verious tricks, but you're comment about gold having a soul I can relate 👍
I plan to retire in 3 years, and then plan to pick full-time. I have already put some of your videos to use. Please keep making these videos. They are not only very entertaining, but highly useful. One of the things I have learned is to ask,"do you have any other jewelry or anything else for sale that you are not displaying". Sometimes this will motivate the sellers to bring out items they were not sure they wanted to sell.
Yup, and once you get them going they might come out 5 times with more bundles of stuff! I'm glad you're putting it to good use. If I can empower people to become more financially self-sufficient, then I am a happy man. Keep it up!
Good info. I go to a lot of road sales looking for tools, etc.. But if I pulled a jeweler's magnifying glass out of my pocket and said, "I'll take this one," the seller would have a sudden change of price.
True. Most of this stuff is for when you see something cheap, buy it and take a chance on it, and THEN you examine it with a loupe. However, what I'm talking about in this video should be visible with the naked eye
You could pretend nearsightedness and pull out your smartphone with the magnifier app. I’ve actually had to do that when I leave my reading glasses in the car.
I have somthing like wolf tooth very ancient ornament bit i dont know what is the edeges are very sharp and has worn marks , its not shiny look gloomy and had 1mm green rust ii found it on mountain top
Finding pieces of precious metal jewelry by themselves is hard enough. Most of them I can tell by the tarnish, the weight, and the feel and rarely do I come across something that could be gold. Even then, many modern pieces have shines and feel that are similar to the ones as seen in the video that unless you're picking up obvious antiques, your chances of gold is slim.
I am a picker and looking for costume jewelry and find gold and silver all the time and just as he said after tons of people have already picked over it.
I have a very heavy Trifari pat pend choker it bends on the link, thats what tell me its gold, it looks silver but Trifari used gold too in the older days, I paid a 1.00 for it .rhodium may be in it, I was told it was lead filled, not sure,
Best trick I learnt from a dealer here in the UK was to buy at least one authentic gold ring...that way in the field you can make the comparison between your real gold and the mystery piece...so far I've got a 9kt gold and a silver ring for field testing (this guy has a silver bracelet, 9, 14, 18 and 22kt gold rings to compare to)
I have an eye for real gold! As you say.. It has a soul! Sometimes it is a little difficult to tell solid gold from pieces such as rolled gold, or gold filled. Gold plate is my pet peeve! It's easy to tell on a piece of jewelry, as the plating adds thickness to the details of the piece, so the detail is not as crisp as solid gold. Also.. One can see if the gold plating has begun to wear off, leaving the base metal showing.. which is usually silver.. or on today's jewelry.. a harsh pink copper base plating starts to show! I even go as far as to "sniff" the gold piece.. Seriously.. metals, like brass, have a different smell, yet.. can look just like gold! Thanks for the info!!
I been in to gold for like 6 mouths and can tell the difference between all gold like 10k 14k 18k 22k and there are a lot of details in real gold like he said so I like this video helps people
Appreciate all the great and informative videos. I watched a lot of them before I went into my interview for the position of Gold Buyer in a gold refinery and I got the job, so thank you for that. :)
I have been doing this for decades and if you saw my finds you just would not believe me that I found a platinum watch at the Goodwill with 176 diamonds, but at the time you should have seen what it looked like, it was absolutely awful looking and that is exactly why they missed it, you could just imagine when I opened the back and it said plat10%rid I knew right then what it was and the diamonds were so crusted with oil and skin and soap every diamond looked fake because no light could get through to reveal just how beautiful it really was, I paid five bucks and it's worth about five to six thousand, yes that was an awsome find I agree, but if saw all that I buy at these estate sales garage sales and my favorite church sales these people absolutely have no idea what they are selling me and if they do know they still make a huge mistake when they sell it, it's absolutely amazing how no matter what year it is there is always someone selling gold for brass, diamonds for glass, and silver for plate. It takes time to know your garage sale gold otherwise you will buy what I call bogies in other words they won't pass the scrapper and you now have to sell it as costume jewelry and not instant cash. God I love garage sales, they just won't stop selling me their gold for 25 cents 50 cents on each piece, God I love gold!
Right there with you! My philosophy is that if an adult with full mental capabilities and access to the internet puts something worth thousands of dollars out for sale for $1 it's fair game!
if you are buying and then reselling unmarked pieces of gold that you've found, how to you convey to your purchasers that it is indeed real gold, and convince them of that? is there a way to prove it to them?
I watched this video 4 plus years ago and everything he said is absolutely true, but u will lose alot of money in the beginning, then u will learn how to identify heavy gold filled from solid gold
I'm quite exited as this 'dragon necklace' I found has passed all the tests apart from one which is that it's not as reflective as the gold in your video
great info .... however a little confused here about the oval dull star piece. You had said the whole thing was gold. did the ground down design give it that dull color?
Hey! Awesome flick. Short, sweet, and informative. I have a couple pieces I'm curious about having appraised in the bay area. Do you have a recommendation by any chance?
Colour/tone is a huge one...I wear a real gold ring I bought from a pawn store for about £50...that ring has made me at least £250 in comparison tests that secured real gold cheap...real gold is quite dull on the surface but multilayered tonewise
THANKS IM IN A BIND I GOT EMBEZZLED BY A LOVE ONE SO UNTILL IGET THAT RIGHT I NEED THAT INFO TO GET BY WITH JEWLERY I ALREADY HAVE THE MAGNET AND CLASP ARE GOOD INFO
I went through some old boxes and found a large rope bracelet with patina on it. My grandfather was quite wealthy, I couldn't find marks I the clasp at all. I used a very large strong magnet and its definitely bit metallic. I had a pawn shop tell me it wasn't real because there were no markings on it. Thru didn't do a scratch test at all. The way it feels when out folds and bends. The way it reflects but has that Layer of patina etc... if this is real its easily 10-15k. It's quite heavy. Any tips?
You could try a specific gravity test. That is where you weigh the item while it is suspended in water. If it's real gold, even just 10k, it will show a high specific gravity (another way of saying high density). Pure gold is 19.32g/cc but your item will be alloyed with something so the density will be lower. If you have a density of like 14g/cc or higher, you're going to have a real gold bracelet. Base metal alloys have a MUCH lower density. You can buy all the items you need to perform this test for less than $10, including a small digital electronic scale.
I have a pendant golden gate of sanfransisco california.. At one side you can see the picture of the bridge ..at the back about golden bridge.."Word longest single suspension bridge.with 4200ft single span completed in 1935 at the cost of 35 million dallors (1/1/6) miles long 6 lines wide contains 698.000 cu.yrd.concrete and over 100.000 tones of stel......I don't know if this pendant is real gold..it is one thing I'm this pendant is very memorable who is the oner at the time....
What a great video to watch .I have never thought about magnet to use it at lease as a first step to see if it will be pulled or not. Haha .. i really like your content 😌 in the videos
I was getting my parent's home ready for an estate sale, I came across an old cigar box full of trinkets at the bottom of a closet. Most of it was junk, I came across a ring with an empty setting and the band was broken, it went into the trash pile. I threw the junk out but somehow the ring had fallen out of the pile. I took it to a jeweler who informed me it was 18k gold from the 30s- 40s, i had an Opal the right size he fixed it for 125$. Someone wanted me to have that ring😊!
Here is a fact about ALL jewelry. Jewelry has been made for a few thousand years. It has only been stamped for a little over 100 years. This means there is 400x more unstamped REAL jewelry than stamped real jewelry. If we go by a 4 thousand time line.
I hear your point, but Jewelry has been hallmarked for many hundreds of years. There are even American hallmarks that are 200+ years old, and that's just in America.
This is incorrect. Precious metals have been regulated in virtually every country for hundreds of years. In Europe in some form for over 600 years (guild marks). Precious metals used to be the backbone of the economy, they had some of the strictest regulations ever.
Hey brother new gold collector, I’ve got an interesting piece a gold rope at least 4000 dollars in wait at current market... has 14 k Italy 🇮🇹 stamped on the clasp.everything looked very legit...brought it home looked up home cleaning remedy’s chose a vinegar baking soda blend.....did so and then..........nothing really just didn’t look like I cleaned it all that much.but the clasp with the stomp looked like a mix of silver and gold. First red flag 🚩 so I grabbed a 🧲 bingo I’ve never seen it grab something so strong. I’m guessing the center is stainless-steel. Lol best case . Anyways why do ppl get away with stamping 14 k on plated and electro bonded pieces 5 times dipped?
It could also be very old so was never marked or the marks have worn away over time sometimes the marked part is missing (earrings without stud's and chains without clasps)
Yes. If a metal is magnetic you can be 100% sure it's not gold or silver. However, if it's not magnetic, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is gold or silver (i.e. it could be nickel or something like that).
women of the late 1890s and early 1900s did not like too much bling-bling what I often see is that a real solid gold ladies watchcase is actually covered with a dark smoky transparent lacker paint just like yours
@@Silverpicker I want you to know, I bought a jar of " jewelry" and found a piece with the same design clasp you described here as antique gold. Now, I still need to have it evaluated, but boy you have no idea how many times I went back and forth on your vid checking and re-checking- thanks for the great hints and tips!!

How to get gold.
Wow! I was a jeweler, and came from a family of Jewelers. You described real gold so well. It does indeed have soul. Thank you.
I finding gold at charity shop
Gods money 🙏🏽

Mpompadour nice! What's the best place to sell gold? Do you take it to a shop or sell online?
Hello can you give your what's up number I want some knowledge about gold
Wow that is amazing!!
@Mpompadour - Thanks for sharing about your purchase and your general experiences. Just goes to show the old adage is true. Knowledge is valuable.

That little gold miners home pendant is so cute
This video is worth its weight in gold!! Thank you for all the great info!!

Gold actually is a metal with energy - you could potentially feel the energy.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
37.5// 6 maybe in your next life you’ll understand
Beth Bartlett Yeah, no
See Monotonic Gold. The properties in Gold have a vast poyential range of Energy Potentials that are not in Mainstream textbooks, save possibly Physics.
It literally can be heated in the Monotonic state and it leaves this Dimension, returns upon cooling.
The studies are most amazing.
Then every metal does.
Some excellent quick tips. And understand about the "soul" part, despite its slippery definition. Cataloging/identifying uncounted remants of the pioneer legacy of Marysville, Montana. Frequently tough just to figure out what the heck half this stuff is much less their substance.
One tip I can tell you that I know of that you didn't mention is that gold shines/ glows in low light in the shadows
This video gave me lots of usual actual information. Thank you
was hoping you were gonna open up that big pendant
That's exactly right! Magnets are an incredible tool. Keep it up and you'll make some nice money on unmarked gold!
Thank you for all these tips you can provide. I will definitely take your advice and study the look of my gold pieces so I have a better feel for what I am seeing when I go out to pick.
What about the ring made of copper or brass and heavily gold plated.
I had a good laugh when you said gold has a soul! Nice job on these finds.
A good way to show people how to see the life in gold is to show Even without light gold will still shine, so the idea is to remove it from the light an see if it still has a shine. What he said about style of clasp and scratches I agree with.
TheDesertwalker m
Hope you’re still enjoying your retirement and found yourself a few pieces of gold 🫡👍
Got it! Thanks!

This dude real for passing the game💪
damn that's funny when he said "this piece has no soul" 😂
I bought an 18ct gold ring for 50p at a Carboot with big amethyst an 4 old cut diamonds and it’s worth £1,250 or more
I have a very heavy Trifari pat pend choker it bends on the link, thats what tell me its gold, it looks silver but Trifari used gold too in the older days, I paid a 1.00 for it .rhodium may be in it, I was told it was lead filled, not sure,

Experience is your best gold buddy. Thanks for your video
You said it, brother
This piece has no soul..😂😂 done when he said that
Omar Diallo that's funny, that's the moment I also stopped watching.
Hi
I found his explanation spot on - Soul - richness. Just like when you listen to a trained voice with natural talent. Made perfect sense to me.
Makes sense
Appreciate all the great and informative videos. I watched a lot of them before I went into my interview for the position of Gold Buyer in a gold refinery and I got the job, so thank you for that. :)
Congrats! It brings me immense joy knowing that I helped (in a small way) someone find employment. I wish you much success in the future.
Thank you for your information on recognizing gold.
It's most informative and well presented
Was the entire locket gold, or was it just the star and clasp?
What if my 10k gold necklace slightly attracts to a magnet? It is a figaro link.
Iam trying to identify minerals from rocks,i have identified many of them like dolomite but no market ln uganda.
Silverpicker , thank you for your video on what is gold just by looking at it and what is not
I have been doing this for decades and if you saw my finds you just would not believe me that I found a platinum watch at the Goodwill with 176 diamonds, but at the time you should have seen what it looked like, it was absolutely awful looking and that is exactly why they missed it, you could just imagine when I opened the back and it said plat10%rid I knew right then what it was and the diamonds were so crusted with oil and skin and soap every diamond looked fake because no light could get through to reveal just how beautiful it really was, I paid five bucks and it's worth about five to six thousand, yes that was an awsome find I agree, but if saw all that I buy at these estate sales garage sales and my favorite church sales these people absolutely have no idea what they are selling me and if they do know they still make a huge mistake when they sell it, it's absolutely amazing how no matter what year it is there is always someone selling gold for brass, diamonds for glass, and silver for plate. Right there with you! My philosophy is that if an adult with full mental capabilities and access to the internet puts something worth thousands of dollars out for sale for $1 it's fair game!
Win it comes to chains can’t just the clasp be gold ?
I recognize gold by its weight there nothing that can mic the density of gold whilst having the same color
The best this is this: bite your "gold" if it feels soft it is gold but it is not.... you got scammed.
I very much enjoyed your video. Thank you very much for this valuable insight.
good times buddy your informational you tube videos always kick ass and either are fact or sound an awful lot like fact i listen to them!
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re enjoying them!
Also... what is a good test besides experience, to tell solid gold or plate... will a magnet still work if it's plated?
Do you know if there is gold in the microwave
Subscribed my man. Thank you so much
Thank you too! Welcome!
i notice that your neo magnet is cracked. time to throw that away as it is HIGHLY TOXIC when damaged:)
I found your video really interesting. Cant wait to start looking at some old jewelry. Thank you
Awesome! Good luck!
if you are buying and then reselling unmarked pieces of gold that you've found, how to you convey to your purchasers that it is indeed real gold, and convince them of that? is there a way to prove it to them?
***** Thx
Durrr
I don't think that was called for.
Maybe if you can density test it.
Lowie Dewind Troll
I have tried jewelry a number of times but the sales I go to have no jewelry to even check.
I watched this video 4 plus years ago and everything he said is absolutely true, but u will lose alot of money in the beginning, then u will learn how to identify heavy gold filled from solid gold
Hey Rayshawn! So glad you enjoyed this video again. I should redo it someday with better sound and lighting lol
HOW IT IS POSSIBLE ? NEAD TO PRACTISE .
So what we are looking for is soul.
You didn't drop them. You can tell by the sound as well.
What do you mean no useful information ? That little bit on the fake gold and the part about the pendant was very informative!!
Thanks mate that was very helpful .
My pleasure!
I have antique kettle but i dont know f this is gold or bronse?
If it's a kettle, it's not gold
Very informative ! Thank you!
I'm quite exited as this 'dragon necklace' I found has passed all the tests apart from one which is that it's not as reflective as the gold in your video
Apart from the thing with the star on it :)
great info .... however a little confused here about the oval dull star piece. You had said the whole thing was gold. did the ground down design give it that dull color?
I believe so. Sometimes gold can be tricky
Hey! Awesome flick. Short, sweet, and informative. I have a couple pieces I'm curious about having appraised in the bay area. Do you have a recommendation by any chance?
I don't, unfortunately. Check google and then get a few opinions. If they're all more or less the same, you can assume they're telling you the truth
Thank You for sharing your knowledge
How would you know if it's not just gold plated or 24k gold filled, especially if it's not marked or falsely marked, just by looking at it?
Colour/tone is a huge one...I wear a real gold ring I bought from a pawn store for about £50...that ring has made me at least £250 in comparison tests that secured real gold cheap...real gold is quite dull on the surface but multilayered tonewise
I absolutely love your vids I just started watching you today I love coin
Thank you Ronnie! Welcome!
You helped me A lot. Stuff I knew but needed to hear it from an expert. Thank you.

I have antique kettle but i dont know f this is gold or bronse
Definitely not gold. I've never seen a gold kettle before
THANKS IM IN A BIND I GOT EMBEZZLED BY A LOVE ONE SO UNTILL IGET THAT RIGHT I NEED THAT INFO TO GET BY WITH JEWLERY I ALREADY HAVE THE MAGNET AND CLASP ARE GOOD INFO
I thought Gold does not tarnish. Why does the gold look tarnished?
the pocket watch is marked on the top right on the back

Best advice ever: " ...gold has a soul...". Yes, and I understand that. It's like it has more than one layer...or dimension to the quality of color.
Brandickert
I was getting my parent's home ready for an estate sale, I came across an old cigar box full of trinkets at the bottom of a closet. Most of it was junk, I came across a ring with an empty setting and the band was broken, it went into the trash pile. I threw the junk out but somehow the ring had fallen out of the pile. I took it to a jeweler who informed me it was 18k gold from the 30s- 40s, i had an Opal the right size he fixed it for 125$. Someone wanted me to have that ring😊!
You said it! Weird how things like that happen!
That's is so cool!💞
Gold has energy, metals are receivers of energy
thank you for the information.
so how do I sell my silver or gold
Gold has a soul.
Oh also I just subbed and liked.... also can I use my magnet as well to find unmarked pieces
Frustrating for sure, but now you know more and next time you'll be prepared to make some good money!
Thank you I learned.
Why wouldn't the maker Mark it?
If it’s an amateur for instance.
It could also be very old so was never marked or the marks have worn away over time sometimes the marked part is missing (earrings without stud's and chains without clasps)
Good info. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the great information.
Silverpicker does a magnet identify both fake silver and gold items?
Thanks silver picker this was encouraging info.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the info!
Just found this, thanks for the heads up!
Glad you found it useful!
Can u help me identify something.?
Great information...thanks
