As a woman of colour, there’s always been times when I’ve been unsure whether a person is being racist to me or not just because it’s always been quite subtle whereas in the media it’s always depicted as something really obvious and in your face. It’s the subtle things like how people will treat u over a certain incident compared to if a similar situation happened to a white person. I’ve always been grown up in a pretty much white community, so I’ve always been unsure/uncomfortable talking about racism when it seems like such a subtle thing that can be dismissed so easily.

Well said. Very glad Hollyoaks did this storyline. People think unless you are yelling slurs, or being overtly racist, that means you have nothing to improve on. We can all do better on not making snap judgements and consider why we think a certain way about certain people. We also need to LISTEN to other people's stories. Some of the reactions on here are quick to dismiss this story when it is based on MANY black women's experiences with healthcare.

The subject of "aggression", in particular is a struggle that is also felt by black men too, myself included. A number of white people I've come across expect me to be calm, happy and content, but once I stand up for yourself or call something out that is not right, they either play the victim, get scared/offended and tell me to stop being so 'aggressive'.

THANK YOU! I’m sorry, I’m not racist and I think it’s disgusting. But I don’t get how anyone could experience this and think “oh yeah, that’s racism”. No. It couldn’t just be the interviewer didn’t like her answer, or didn’t overly like her. Grace was crying so Perri felt more sorry for her than Martine who wasn’t , she had to choose one of them and she picked. Maybe perri shouldn’t have turned martine away but that was a professional issue, and nothing to do with race. And I can’t hold this opinion without someone interrupting and telling me how it’s my “white privilege”.
The same with this whole ordeal at the moment about women and men. We are literally being taught to fear every man, blaming them all for a couple of men. Yet nobody ever mentions the women who hurt or kill or rape. “Not all men but enough to make a difference”. Yet that is the same for women.
Honestly, we are just becoming a society of moaners. Blaming people for things that aren’t their fault. Calling them racist for taking a certain view, sexist for standing up for equality. Why we can’t all just be totally equally and stop blaming each other is beyond me

But this story and using a character we know not to be our picture of a racist is important because it makes us all think of our own behaviour instead of finding ourselves not guilty all the time or defensive. Raising awareness of how prominent racism, unconscious bias and micro aggressions are in society is not race baiting. If you’re uncomfortable good, it’s your choice to watch the episode, but for black people, and other people of colour it’s not their choice to experience this sort of treatment everyday.

@@shandatoney2611 there is. Calling a black woman agressive for simply standing up for herself is a micro aggression, peri doesn’t realise or even know that, she didn’t understand how using that word is stereotyping Martine, that an unconscious bias. Peri has obviously never been used about micro aggression that white people used against black people everyday especially black women.

This is just stupid, fair enough peri overbooked but grace was first either one of grace or martine had to get seen thst day at that time, if she had told martine to go through, it would be seen as racist against grace because shes white, and as for peri asking martine to stop being aggressive she would say the same to grace if she was being aggressive towards her, im all for blm but the hospital scenes weren’t racist or anti-blm

You might be treated like that in the area you live but the whole point here is that Martine was treated differently to Grace by the very same people. It's not saying white people aren't ever treated disrespectfully. Black people are more likely to experience these micro-aggressions than white people and it is racist when certain people who don't do it to white people do it to black people

This episode is highlighting unconscious bias and for this particular character on the show this is her experience.... Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one's tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing. So yes it can have an impact on other people but for the purpose of this storyline it is being told through the characters experience.

No she wasn’t. She simply didn’t understand why Grace got seen first, peri double booked the appointment and martine arrived first. Grace only got seen because she was upset. Martine has a lump as well, might have cancer as well and is just as scared as grace is, that’s not aggressive.
