I absolutely LOVE hearing that nose going to work lol All too often "pet" dogs that don't have a specific job seem to lose/forget the ability to use their nose as it was ment to be used. Doing something as simple as these "find it" game reminds them of how important their nose is and gets them in the habbit of using it more often. Great and very simple steps to breakdown the game so anyone can understand and teach it to their dog. Great Video 👏👏👏 I love Luna and her gorgeous markings!! Such a typical Border Collie, smart, always watching/thinking, very focused, and for lack of a better term just fun to have and be around 😊🐾🐕

The way I trained my black lab was I took a hotdog put it on a string and dragged it across my deck. I placed a small piece of hotdog behind the leg of my picnic bench. The dog never saw me and I let him out of the house and gave him the scent of the hotdog from my hand. I made it throwing motion in my hand towards the picnic bench. Granted my dog is highly food reactive, unlike the dog in the video. He was immediately on the scent and found it fairly quickly. Then I did the same thing and dragged it across my lawn about 20 feet away. And kept practicing further and further away until basically he could find it anywhere on my property. Even when I placed it on a small tree branch 3 feet high. I would drag the hotdog from my backyard all the way around to my front yard and then watch him go nuts looking for it. It was really fun because they go off scent and go in the opposite direction and then turn back and then go off again and then turn back until eventually he finds it. I have always been amazed by how sensitive dogs noses are.

My mum rescued a terrier cross from the pound recently and since he's shown he likes sniffing out rats and possums I've been meaning to try nosework with him. Now that we're heading into summer here in Australia the hotter days (getting over 40 degrees!) are the perfect chance to start. Great video, nice clear & simple instructions that even my mum's not-so-obedient dog will probably pick up no problem :)

My largest issue at the moment in training is that I have two dogs with very different personalty's and ages, breeds of dogs everything different and they don't focus together.

When we first started playing this game, I soaked the ball. As we progressed i started using less and less Axe on the ball. Her progress is amazing. And she absolutely loves the game. Here's my dilemma. When she finds the ball she picks it up and runs back to me and we do it again. I'd like to train my dog to detect bed bugs. I live near Chicago and there plenty of pests to be detected. As I said, she detects a perfume soaked ball and indicates by bringing it to me. My goal is her detecting the scent of a tiny bedbug and then giving me a passive indication. Not really sure of the quickest way to get her to that final point. Any suggestions?
Please tell me! Is she working or show line? I don't find any showline breeders that breed dogs that have that agile body, they all start to look very fluffy and stocky.. in working line I like the look of most of the borders more, but I don't know, can they be without sheep?

InspiredSkill Don't put it on the floor. There are ways to train this without putting treats on the floor. This is ok for pet dogs but not so much for those of us with service dogs that cannot eat treats off the floor. I think all pet dog owners should train their dog to not eat off the floor or ground as there can be very dangerous things in the ground. Like in New York people put rat poison inside of meat. But I wouldn't follow this if you are training your dog to not eat off the floor/ground. There are many offical nose work compition videos you can follow. Leerburg puts many out as well as sells the smell canisters.

This was fun, I taught my heeler to find the tea bag in 10 minutes, she loved it!

As far as I know you can teach knew things to dogs of almost any age. It might take longer but I'd definitly give it a try!
