My grandfather was a nutritionist and trainer at NASA during the Apollo program. I have the pea whistle he blew while putting astronauts through their paces. It's an Acme Thunderer, and though the nickel plating has decayed it's still LOUD. Thanks for reminding me of it, and him!
Thanks very much Harry - I'm not sure about that but I do my best. I think I need to get an Acme Thunderer to compare mine - I probably should've done that first. :)
Made me laugh my butt off when you said it didn't matter about scribing with the calipers because they weren't your's anyway, lol. This was a fun project. Btw... didn't even know those power file machines were a thing. Seems they're pretty handy.
I don't Insta, but watched both kayaks built, and Corin's in the water. They are both beauties. Bye-the-bye, Corin's shop looks just right, a workshop.
I have been watching since the first scrap wood challenge, and I must say, I'm never disappointed in the projects and Ideas you put out there, well done as always
Thanks very much Seth! I'm especially happy that you mention the commentary as that's what I struggle with the most and I'm always a little unsure of. :)
Wow that’s pretty cool. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.
100db is the standard description of a symphony orchestra playing forte or a really noisy home power tool. The warble helps other people locate the source of the sound. A rattling sound is much easier. Pure tones are difficult to place because the echo is the same note as the source. Your mind can tell which sound came first without you having to think about it.
Awesome work per usual. Thanks so much. And yes I don’t think there is one of us who would say no to a folding knife making education vid. Especially from you. Thanks again. Cheers
I love that Pask can't even be away from home for a few weeks without getting the Maker Shakes and being compelled to use a friend's shop to build something.
That turned out fabulous Neil. Always a pleasure watching your videos mate and I reckon that's yes's all round for the knife video buddy. Awesome video my friend 👍🏼👍🏼
For the vinyl mask, if you put it on the whistle before weeding it, then weed it off of the whistle itself, you'll be able to save those tiny inner pieces (so long as you don't lose them when plotting them).
I have been enjoying your vids for sometime and I have always thought of you as a engineer type usually very serious and to the point, I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything or had to use the restroom when you made that comment about the calipers.
Great project well executed. Love the making of the cork ball-very clever. Potentially minor point, some brass (free machining brass) has lead in it. I’ve used other brass alloys when making things people will eat off of.
Very nice! I have a vintage Police Whistle and a more recently made one that has a University’s name on it. The second one I believe was for women to carry in order to alert others in case of attack. The whistle is a more or less forgotten and harmless weapon against crime.
From conception, now to completion. SO gratifying to watch! Loved every detail. (When I retire and win the lottery, I'm going to live in Corin's workshop and pay him for board.) SO many cool things! Thank you Neil!
Its my little baby! It is ridiculously big but it spent its whole life outside in the weather and after I restored it, it now lives on y bench being appreciated. You can see the state it was in on my instagram.

Oh man I would love to do a folding knife course or something similar. I have a few hundred old folding and pocket knives my grandfather left me. Absolutely love the classic designs and some of the weird and interesting ones.
Both my dogs were intrigued and really happy to watch the screen when you blew the whistle without the ball, with the ball they didn't like it nearly as much, so I guess they're siding with you on preferring the sound without 😉 And I would love to see a knife making course video if you have the time to put it together! 😃
Very neat! I'm the world's worst when it comes to soldering and always say I'm going to practice more.... but never do. Maybe a whistle would be a good project.... I've always used Bluing compound on brass and copper. It works wonderfully and if you don't clean the metal really well, I've found that the randomness gives you a very nice "vintage" look to whatever you're making. Basically, all you're doing is speeding up the natural process that would patinate the copper/brass eventually. I'll paint the solution on real haphazardly, with no worry about cleaning the metal, then go over it with fine steel wool to blend things. Makes brand new pieces look a century old.
@@corinkayaker Hope you like it as much as I do. I can't remember the last time I cleaned copper or brass before bluing it. If you want the deep rich blue like on a rifle barrel, you have to polish the metal to a mirror shine and clean it perfectly with alcohol or spirits. But if you're just looking for that vintage patina.... all the oils and grime on the metal just help make the coat uneven like would happen naturally. Then it's just a matter of rubbing down with steel wool. You can add dabs of bluing here and there, wiping it away with the wool and then adding more, just to tweak it how you like. Next thing you know, you're running around the house looking for more copper and brass bits you can tarnish! 😁
very cool I used to like finding bits of reed or elderberry branches and whittling whistles when I was a kid, I did one for my kids when they were young but thats the last one I did about 15 years or so ago
".... doesn't matter because the calipers aren't mine anyway ...." 😁 It's always great to have canny friends around Your tools. Folding knives - yes please!
This video came out great, even being removed from your shop and being shot on a phone. I like seeing you do smaller makes that are approachable for more novice makers or folks with smaller toolsets. Big stuff is flash and everyone likes to see it, but I'm thankful for content creator makers like you that make the scope of their projects diverse. Keep it up👌. Also, FUCK YEAH show the knife making class!!
Thanks very much Ben - glad you enjoyed it! These sort of projects can be fun and I enjoy making them - the folding knife video shouldn't be too far away. :)

I agree!
Yeah... silly question. 😊
Exactly!
Totally 👍🏻
[ 2:32 ] "...it doesn't actually matter because the callipers aren't mine anyway!"
Very understated humour (I hope!)
My grandfather was a nutritionist and trainer at NASA during the Apollo program. I have the pea whistle he blew while putting astronauts through their paces. It's an Acme Thunderer, and though the nickel plating has decayed it's still LOUD. Thanks for reminding me of it, and him!
That plastic cup trick for the cork ball was A+ master maker stuff, sir!
Glad you liked it Jason, it worked treat. :)
If anyone complains about literally anything you do they can absolutely suck it and eff off lol you’re a literal master at what you do!!
^this
The "scrap" in Corin's workshop would be lucky to make it to project material for a lot of makers. Holy moly.
“It doesn’t actually matter because the calipers aren’t mine anyway.” This statement make a great video, perfect. Thanks Neil.
Of course we want to see the knife making. Great whistle, good to have while kayaking.
Okay Neil, time to do that brown paper bag project!!!!
Never mind TH-cam, your videos are some of the best filmmaking out there. I have an Acme Thunderer, always admired the deceptive simplicity of it!
Thanks very much Harry - I'm not sure about that but I do my best. I think I need to get an Acme Thunderer to compare mine - I probably should've done that first. :)
"because the calipers aren't mine anyway" LOL that's fantastic, a little poke at Corin and your more "busybody" viewers :)
he is mean to me all the time.

Haha - glad you enjoyed that. The die filer is awesome but Corin's is a big machine and would take up too much room in my workshop. :)
@@PaskMakes Looking forward to your small die file project!
Ofcourse, we would enjoy seeing the knife show footage 👍🏻

such a beautiful machine!

you would be surprised how many people get worked up when he does a non wood working video.
Thanks very much - glad you're still enjoying the projects. :)
This is a nice little easy project to get started in brass forming. I'll give it a shot.
you maybe forgot to watch it to the end?
Said that before i finished, I always thought you had to put them in before you close it.i guess you learn something new everyday.
@@Mikesmeyer88 haha no worries mate!

How simple, yet, how daring?!!! Like the way your mind wanders, Neil!
I second the request for the knifemaking course videos!
Nice whistle Neil. I'm keen to see your slip joint video.
Cool. I appreciate the fact that you use little projects like this to commemorate social events with your lads.
We always have fun.... This was not the only project either, we had a few on the go!
holy crap those knives look so professional, i would definitely want to see them being made!!
Very nice! It's like a piece of jewelry.
You never fail to entertain me with your humble mechanical brilliance.
I love watching your projects. Everything from the concept and execution to the production and commentary. You're one of the best on YT
Agreed!
Thanks very much Seth! I'm especially happy that you mention the commentary as that's what I struggle with the most and I'm always a little unsure of. :)

Of course we wanna see the folding knife course footage LOL
Oh PLEASE show us you making those beautiful folding knives ❤️
Reminds me of the 'Acme Thunderer' that I used to use when I was teaching and still have as a memento.
Beautiful work! And yes, of course we want to see the knife making!
Thanks Jarik - the knife video is on the way! :)
Just as good as all the rest. I about jumped out of my chair when you started shaping the ball on the belt sander!😎
Yeah that was a case of Pask genius

About scribing with the calipers: That is standard practice among jewelers. And if they were yours, sharpening them only takes a few seconds.
