It has to be for legitimate issues, so for example let’s say your CO is the problem then you’d be able to go to your battalion commander and then so on and so forth. It gets into the weeds but yeah as long as your case is solid then you’re good

Yup. If you’ve been on on anxiety or depression meds for more than a year, you can’t serve in the military. You can potentially wipe medical documents but it will require pre-planning and if things are online then you may not be able to. The military told me I was over qualified for all the officer positions they had available but I wouldn’t make it past medical. With the rising care about mental health and people getting on medications, the military is gonna be in trouble if it doesn’t ease back on these rules.
I never made that connection before but now that I see it clear as a neon sign my jaw is on the floor. All the places i have been to over the years that called themself "behavioral health" places were incredibly toxic and dismissive. I'm growing bitter with the world because of the way i see other people have been treated, and how outright cruel a loud number of people have become over the past decade. Thinking happy thoughts to counteract the realities of the world is as useful as thoughts and prayers and it's not because of MY behavior!
That's what I'm afraid of with these videos. The more people speak out, the more retaliation that can be carried out on them by the people or situation that compelled them to speak out. And it's bullshit too. Whenever you speak out, it's usually a flipped coin. Either the message works and change is pushed to rectify the issue (and that's assuming people listens but doesn't do much about it out of malice), or they bum rush you with negative output that pushes you into more withheld behaviors or worse.
Depends if his previous unit still has the same command team. However, usually higher staff always have this complex of bringing the issue back on you and saying "Why did you not report this issue sooner? You could have done something about this by contacting higher departments."

My experience in the Army wasn't quite as horrible as this overall. But I did almost die from Appendicitis. Medics thought I was faking, NCOs figured it was just a flu and told me to work through it. Only when the pain was so great I had trouble standing up did they take me to the ER. There, the doctors thought I was faking because they couldn't find it in the imaging they took. Nearly 2 weeks later they looked at the same image again, and found the inflammation. By this time I was delerious and hallucinating. I don't even remember my mom arriving at the hospital, she told me later that I was looking around the room frantically and asking why I could hear "animal noises". It took me nearly 2 months to recover, and they sent me to Iraq 3 months later. My mental health sharply declined, they diagnosed me with Adjustment Disorder, and they let me leave the next year. Silver lining is that I get a decent monthly check for physical and cognitive issues related to my sepsis. Though it doesn't replace what I could've had if I had just gotten treated immediately.

Sounds like one of those "dead career" bases where they ship the bad officers until they're ready to leave. I know of several that are just complete nightmares to work on.
I served 21 years in the Army. I deployed to Iraq for 48 months from 2003 to 2011. I shared my mental health problems on a USASOC video to help others like me to get help. And 10 years later this is the reality of our Soldiers. This is the #1 reason why I moved my family overseas. My children will not serve in the US military as long as I have a pulse.
Yeah my Dad was talked out of going by my grandfather but every veteran I’ve interacted with has had PTSD and I think that speaks to how terrible it is.
Facts they refused to acknowledge my PTSD because it was removed from my one therapy session I’d had. I got a “failure to adjust” and thus I’ll never qualify for service disability.
Man that "why don't you just be that different leader." is so spot on. We had a guidance counselor from a college tell us this same thing when he came to visit school and then said sadly it doesn't work that way and people want revenge so they punish others. He went on talking about people becoming the evil teacher in a "well I had to do this horrible paper so I'll make all my students do this horrible paper." It was advice and a warning as the one psych 101 professor was like if you were a psychologist you'd know this.

I thought I'd be able to push past all the hardshit in the marine corps the recruiters said (the physical training & hikes) I was never let known abt any of the petty, fucked up trash this video basically sumed up. My boy joined back in 2017, just got out earlier this year and spent most of his time in the army at ft Bliss. The anime dude you interviewed here was a pvt at the time of the blue on blue incident and did not have direct access to the story, unlike my friend. The tank incident was not "swept under rug", the tank commander who did not PID the tank and ordered his gunner to fire on it ended up getting court martialed. Also, the the tank was shot TWICE, not just once. And the tank commander who was in the tank which was hit was killed in the accident, not just injured or riddled with shrapnel. He had his entire arm blown off, and his lung collapsed, he died during transit to hospital. Also my friend was woken up at late at night to go find the bore sight kit which the Bradley shot into orbit lmao he has a pic of him and a bunch of other dudes kneeling / posing with it out in the in the desert from once they found it lmao Overall tho my amigo hated bliss and is happy to be out of El Paso and out of the army. Just wanted to correct some info that this anime lad most likely didn't have access to at the time
Bliss is riddled with rumors because these things happen often. I'm fairly confident, leadership prefers the underbreath rumors because quite often they end up casting smaller shadows than the real story, where they are often culprits.

There are a couple of bases in the US that are just notoriously awful, and they're so large that the culture can't be changed by ordinary changes in leadership. Without solid leadership from the top correcting the issue, the problems will expand and the US Army will begin to noticeably suffer from the same problems the Russians are experiencing in the field.

As for the idea of being a therapist, I have considered it, and at one point almost changed my college major from computer science to psychology. It's a decision I'm still thinking about now, as both of these fields are absolutely fascinating to me.
i can see it too, although i am not a therapist in any way.. but i have helped a few people from suicide and they gone to get professional help as a 12 year old at that time not much i could really do but to encourage them, talk to them, related to them which i won't say any of their stories i have heard. although the ones i couldn't save these 6 words still haunt me til this day and im 27 (what could i have done better) some of these people were overseas in a different country and met online through games so i didn't know who to even contact about this.. i don't do that stuff anymore because of their stories drained me a lot and some of the nightmares from their words haunt me even til this day..

Near the end of my enlistment, I was having severe panic attacks at least monthly. My team leader openly mocked my panic attacks in the middle of the kitchen (we’re cooks) and no one said anything. My squad leader did nothing about it, and I was scared to take it higher because I knew nothing would happen and it’d lead to retaliation. This was when I was getting med boarded for sever anxiety.
I am in the Navy myself and everything he said is more accurate than anyone wants to admit. The best advice I can give is that if you know someone who is serving check up on them. It doesn't matter if they miss it because of work, a missed call is still valuable. Compassion from others and the reminder of their love is the best thing that can help service members. Few service members join solely because they are patriots, most of them join because they want to improve their lives and the lives of those that rely on them. This was eye-opening. My friend, a veteran who was deployed to the Middle East until recently, sent me this video. I haven’t known that many people who have served, so this gives a very revealing look at the culture of a mismanaged unit and how having the wrong superiors can end in death. It’s one thing to try to tough it out and encourage others to do the same, but when people have the power to make things less shitty for their subordinates, they have no excuse not to do so. The lack of accountability all around must be maddening. I also love how the host comforted the guest at the end when he talked about how he felt like he was turning into the same shitty type of person as the officers he despised. It was heartwarming. I wish the best for this dude, and I hope someone with enough power realizes that this gross mismanagement and callousness is killing people in several ways.

At Fort Polk I’ve had a lot of toxic leadership for my time being in but I’m blessed I started to get better leadership. Also good friends really does make the time being in worth it so does having good leadership that also cares about their soldiers . Towards the end I’m glad I was able to become the leader I wanted to have when I first got to my unit. BtW Fort Polk medical sucks.
I'm at Fort Polk too, been here since 2020. Thank the stars we have better leadership now then I got here, it's definitely gone significantly up hill. Right now I got a couple of new soldiers I'm sponsoring and I'm doing everything possible to make sure that their transition here is better for them than it was for me
When he said "you can ask anyone in the Army, what's worse? A toxic soldier or a Toxic Leader?" And without missing a beat, I said toxic leader because even if I havent experienced it at my unit, all it takes is one toxic leader to not give a shit about Joes and be abusive and the toxic culture will begin to spread like a cancer thought the unit. People who can recognize it will either leave the unit, leave the Army or try to muscle through it and hope not to replicate it. What's worse is that you can be exposed to it, hate it, become it without realizing it, PCS away from the local toxic leadership environment and pass it off to another unit. It's a viscous cycle that is worse in some units rather than others but it's bad enough thoughout at least the Army (don't know about the other branches, I think the USMC has a similarish problem but Marines are too high on their own supply to address it but I could be wrong), that it's near memedom how bad it gets. I guess we have to laugh not to cry.
Something you could do to alleviate that guilt, if you haven't already, is go apologize to the guy you told to fuck off. Admitting you realized what you did wrong to the one you did the wrong to helps both parties move past the situation.
The single most eye opening event in my military service was in basic training, when the human personification of West Virginia went up to the group of urban black guys at the end of basic and said "y'all are the first black people I've ever talked to, and y'all aren't as bad as they say"

as a kid I wanted to join the airforce, but now that I know how bad working conditions are in millitary are. I think knowing these things are one of the reasons why the military is constantly needing peaple to work. I feel like if working conditions where a little better,and the government actualy cared about what the bad leaders where doing less peaple would commit suicide during service.
While the Airforce has its problems, that and the coast guard are actually the best branches to join. The Army really is a cesspool and my entire experience was extremely negative. My therapists in Behavioral Health were so unprofessional and abusive they gave me PTSD and nearly drove me to suicide. I transitioned directly into homelessness and still regret not going through with it. This happened in 2021.

@@marz.6102 I'm part of a military women's group on Facebook and there are a lot of people on there who are struggling due to their mental health. It's likely because they got stuck in a bad job (you can't choose), are in a toxic unit, are overworked (maintenance), or are struggling due to personal reasons. The Air Force does treat their people better but they're still not immune to the toxic leadership issue which is the #1 reason why the military is failing right now.

I feel like this guy would get along with Zach from Mikeburnfire. The channel consists of two veterans from different branches of the military who typically share their shitty experiences from the military. Zach was stationed in Fort Polk, which is apparently also one of “those” military bases where if you’re sent there, you wouldn’t want to reenlist. Their stories are funny, but God some of them are really depressing, such as how he has received multiple concussions in a row, so they kind of swept everything under the rug and let him be instead of reporting it and taking responsibility.

I was in Marine Corps boot camp for the past 4 months. I was in MCRD San Diego. I got medically discharged. I fractured my tibia, thankfully didn’t need to get surgery but I was close. Going through everything there I learned that it doesn’t matter who or what you are, you can always be corrupt. It doesn’t matter how high up you are or how formal or professional your organization is, there’s always the potential for corruption, negligence, abuse, and any other number of bad things. People, recruits have died in training at that base. Drowning, heat stroke suicide, and like this guy said it gets swept under the rug. The general population, most civilians have no idea shit like that has happened but it has. They’ve made improvements over the years but my point is corruption can be found anywhere. The tip of the tip, the highest of high up people can be corrupt.

Good to listen the lower enlisted perspective and listening to this soldier’s experience and how each service has its own twists on situations that just churn up good people. Sadly, it’s been my observation the army is committed to numbers game out of all of the services. Regardless of service, each branch does a brilliant job of chewing up good leaders.
Well the thing is even from a numbers game point of view this makes little sense. It is true that in peacetime leaders aren't going to be rotated out like they are in wartime (which btw is almost a requirement for an effective army, you want to rotate leaders in and out even if they are doing a decent job) but this is having a disproportionate effect on the force's readiness and effectiveness. The US is expeditionary in nature, using a professional army. By it's very definition your entire combat effectiveness relies of having an effective combat structure with a high level of competency, independence and motivation from the lowest end of your army. Unlike a conscript army, you need a professional army to be able to punch way above it's weight as you can't just relegate the dirty jobs to barely paid mobniks, and plug the holes with special forces. But what is happening here is that in an effort to save a few dozen thousands bucks in command logistics and oversight apparatus, you are letting maybe a dozen dudes render and entire army combat ineffective. It also adds extra piling costs in maintenance for training replacements, punches a hole into the recruitment numbers, and lowers soldier effectiveness across the entire nation as no one feels compelled to go above and beyond in such an environment. It only seems like a better option on the paper of some accountant somewhere, because the hidden costs aren't factored into the equation up until it is far too late.
It seems so easy to put it under the rug. I'm waiting for what is coming out of these short yet eye-opening, genuine conversations with people who have gone through a lot and are willing to speak out about these things.
Seeing how you can just go around and talk to people who teach out to you is inspiring, the world needs more people to listen with their hearts like you do. People this day and age have grown so cynical and cold to the cries of the world. Thank you for taking the time to give these people a voice or just an outlet. Please don't over stress yourself though
My dad has stories like this dating all the way back to just pre Vietnam era. He was Australian special forces and he spent a lot of time with the US training and deployed. He said to me that if you’re anything below an NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) then it was cheaper and easier for them if you died on the patrol then if you came back without your leg

When you are dishonorably discharged the military can deny you benefits etc this happened to alot of people who never got home VA loans after ww2 and vietnam because they were scrutinized more than other soldiers to get them out.

The reason I watch these videos is to understand what other people go through. Whether it be life altering conditions/illnesses, life threatening environments or just general struggle and stress. I suffer from very bad stress and anxiety, but I whenever my parents ask if I'm depressed I generally avoid the topic and say the two words that people know are not their true meaning "I'm fine". Normally I also keep to myself and avoid talking to people about problems I face (hence the very bad stress and anxiety) especially when someone I know is depressed and I push my feelings and own emotions all the way back and support them. I appreciate that Azeal does these videos because I can know that I am not the only one in my position, that there are others who are as well. Even if it's worse or better, it's still nice knowing that people are in these positions or have these experiences but manage to push through.
Former avi tech for the USMC. They (brass and some higher enlisted) will (unless they’re the good ones) not give a fuck about you. Doesnt matter the job, you are replaceable. Enlisting was a great choice in my life, but i saw some downright fuckery while in and not the good kind. You hear these stories in every branch. If you think about joining find your real brothers/sisters in whatever branch you join. They will get you through so much bs and the vice versa. If you have a friend thats a vet give them a call and see if they’re okay.

these videos remind me that i am not alone and that i can relate to others. i left the military after 6 years just a couple months ago... well i didn't leave on my own.. i was medically retired due to service related injuries and was forced out. moved back with my parents into a town and state that i've grown disgusted of over the years. my family doesn't feel like family and my friends no longer feel like friends. but videos like these remind me that i am not alone. there are others who feel the same way i do and who are fighting the same battle. it is not something i wish upon others, in fact (may sound weird) i wish i were the only one with this problem because this is an awful feeling to experience. being surrounded by people who will NEVER understand. this is therapy for us. thank you.
Hey my uncle was at Fort Bliss at the end of his years in service. he hated it but he found silver linings. got himself a loyal ass rescue dog and now he gets paid 100% disability as a nomad around the US
the thing that really kills me about stories like his is that hearing him talk about leadership being borderline hostile, the shitty conditions, and especially getting blacklisted for seeking help when you're going through something, it's like I'm hearing myself talking. It's the same story from different mouths, and I've been in therapy with folks from other bases and whenever I talk about how hard it is just to get help they all chime in with similar stories, it is this bad everywhere. Big facts right here. I'm at a different unit and I can say that toxic leadership is half the problem. A year ago, our company and my platoon was squared away. When we got a new commander, it got worse. When we got a new 1SG, everyone be getting out or changing MOS. As much as I miss being on line with my guys, I don't miss the leadership. Your friends are one of the things that keep you sane. Shit talking be mad sus, but also mad hilarious. Hope you get weekends off at your next duty station.
Holy shit I’m so glad this is the one you uploaded. I’ll edit when I’m done! So real talk I’ve experienced all of these types of toxic leaders and more. I was made a target of the chain of command due to trying and attempting to fix these issues. This corruption spans from the lowest levels of NCO leadership all the way to the Commanding Officer of fort bliss. It is absolutely insane and there were more times than I could count where myself or others seriously considered ways to kill our leadership.
Hearing this guy finally come out and expose this kinda stuff...It kinda inspires me to do the same. Hearing this almost brought me to tears just because of how much I can relate. I wasnt in the army, but in the navy. Any chance I could meet up somewhere and talk about it as well? I dont know how you arrange this kinda thing, but i'm willing to jump through hoops to make it work

I remember that tank incident! I was at Abrams gunnery on fort Stewart, looking at the pics on wtfarmy. My first duty station was Ft Bliss, 2000-2004. I was with Garrison Command and later with the MP Battalion. Suicides were rare on post, they were more worried about cartels coming over and shooting the place up (which had happened). Training accidents were rare also. Mc Gregor Range was constantly in use also. I was later in 1st Armor 07-09 back in Baumholder and in Iraq. Last surge brigade. We were all pretty tight then. Someone got beat up in town by the turks? Damn near the whole brigade was hunting for them. The only place I've been that was anywhere close to as bad was in Seoul. 8th PERSCOM at the time, now just a part of 8th Army G1. Even the Commander and 1SG were only out to get a good OER or NCOER. No one coached lower enlisted, even for SGTs time training. Only team that did was my team, the 6 shop. We even invited other sections to study and train with us. And SFC Washington was a PENTAGON guy. We were the only section to show ip to soldier of the month boards. Everyone else was fend for yourself and the soldiers were treated as burdens by the NCOs. I got out in 2012. Sounds to me like I got while the gettin was good.

Ft Bliss was Air Defense Artillery back when I was there, 1st Armor was scattered across Germany. I have been out for 10 years. The military has problems now. I can only speak ablout the Army from 10-20 years ago. What we need is solutions to current problems, not problems from the past. Appreciate the offer though.
@@nonyabidness6492 late 90s, they did. One of the reasons the housing areas around William Beaumont were closed. They had tunnels straight onto post that were known when I was there in 2004. Juarez is a cartel stronghold even today.

4 minutes 26 seconds in, and I can sadly say. A lot of people in the army have very similar stories like this about stateside duty stations But it is refreshing to see people starting to listen It's also satisfying to see the army feeling the backlash from their recruitment numbers
These interviews are insane, it’s really worthwhile hearing these stories from these kinds of people themselves “dang near boots on the ground” instead of through another 120 people down the grape vine. I would like to apologize in advance for the actions of Tyrone Brown. He was my 1st sgt. at Fort Eustis and I dont know what his rank is currently. When I was still in the Army he lied to me and told me I couldn't go to hazmat school because I wasn't a Sgt. This was because he's extremely incompetent and bad at talent management. He wanted me to shut down the mailroom for a week and drive to the field even though it wasn't an important mission and ended up being cancelled. He also likes to create "committees" and always assign the same soldiers in alphabetical order to them, thus causing them to be overworked. He seemed like a nice guy until his actions told me otherwise.
I was actually in an online group with someone who came out of the military consumed by that horrible "tough guy" mentality. It made them paranoid, led them down conspiracy rabbit holes, and all around gave them the most horrid attitude towards life. I blocked out a lot of what they said to me, but basically they had it in their head that since I was and am trying to support people and help the world, that I'm a fool and I'll be killed and forgotten because I don't want to hurt people. Even to defend myself. I will not accept anyone telling me that I have no right to speak ill of military culture because I'm a civilian: military or not, we are still human beings capable of so much. To be able to recognize and escape such an awful mindset takes a will of steel: service to our country should not cost one their humanity. Empathy and understanding are our greatest strengths: no one has any right to strip those away. Sorry if this rambly. Needed to pour out my own emotions.
You can still defend yourself physically if it comes down to it, right? I consider myself an empathetic person too, but I will kill or hurt someone if I have to.

Having that mentality is a necessity in the military to keep your sanity. The issue is turning it off after getting out. Everyone that has gotten out no matter how shitty it was will tell you they would do it again, or miss it. It does hold true if you didn't serve you wouldn't understand, but I do agree everyone deserves to be treated as a human.
Damn, if I was the suicidal one there I'd have started by taking out the sarge first. Feels almost scary to think about how strong this guy is mentally to not have fragged the sarge.
What he stated throughout this is exactly the reason I got out when I had the opportunity, too many deaths, too much suffering, not enough time or ability to self improve.
Ive never had the ability to put the emotions he expressed into words. People ask why it seems that my emotions are jaded. Like i dont care about other people and their problems and he explained it perfectly. The lifestyle of the army and the higher ups that you work under really do tear you down to the point where you reall just dont give the slightest s!@t anymore. I'm not going to lie, after hearing stories like this and the stories from Zach over at Mikeburnfire's channel, I'm kinda glad I didn't make it into the military.
Reminds me of a time just a couple years ago, I work aircraft maintenance in the Airforce. One day we're out on the flight line, trying to get a plane fixed so it can go up and do some training mission or some shit. Engine troops are on the number 3 engine, they having cowlings (the shell around the engine itself) opened up on both sides so the engine is totally exposed. There's like 6 of these guys, one on each side of the engine and a few sitting underneath it all working on figuring out the issue on it. Suddenly, I hear a loud whirring and compressed air noise that sounds suspiciously like an engine spooling up to start, and sure enough all of those jet troops are frantically getting as far from the engine as they can while the crew chief is on comms with the flgiht crew yelling at the top of his lungs into the mike screaming at them to stop the engine start because theres still people directly fucking under it, if they hadnt stopped it those side cowlings would have blown off and slammed into them, killing or severely injuring them and probably would have thrown the people under it a good few hundred feet. sergeant goes running up the stand and starts just tearing the flight crew an asshole for a good 15 minutes, which was great. Fast forward a couple days, turns out nothing past getting yelled at by a couple of maintenance sergeants and some of the dudes they almost fucking killed happened to them. Far as I know, theyre still flying planes. Its wild how much stupid shit happens in the military and just gets swept under the rug because it would expose the commanders of these units as being the incompetent, shitty piles of garbage they really are.

Stay strong. My father was in the army and sadly it hasn't changed much since then. Seems even worse now.
I'm just saying. I've been an EMT since I got out of the army. I've collected my fair share of bad calls. But this was harder to watch than any of the interviews where people talked about bad calls, or death, or any of the other messed up stuff I was able to relate to. Thank you for making this. Deep, deep shit and it's insane to hear about. I had a second cousin in the Aus military who offed himself a few years back, it's wild hearing about how often this shit can happen in some military environments. Also the Joker model was a fitting choice for this somehow.
Fort Polk sounded astonishingly incompetent in the stories I've heard, Fort Bliss sounds like it's full of malicious bastards that are deliberately making people miserable.
My uncle retired some five years ago or so and he is a functional alcoholic. He was a Master Sergeant or Major Sergent or whatever MSG stands for and he never talked about his time there other than when he was actually stationed in other countries. The few questions I’ve asked him about stuff he normally gives a brief and/or vague answer to before changing the subject. I guess I know why now. Who wants to talk about that shit to their nephew who always viewed you as a hero? Maybe I should have a conversation about it now that I’m twenty one and seen some shit myself. Might help him get something off his chest.
Had pretty much the same experience at Ft Leonardwood Missouri in my engineering battalion. I joined the US ARMY in 2018 and its the same way there as well. D31st Engineering Battalion isn't much better. I got injured and was due for surgery day 1 of the injury and the army basically told me to PISS OFF and go home. Broke my femur and they gave me ibuprofen and crutches and then threw me out. Got home and have ZERO ASSISTANCE out of the gate and had to live my life with no help with a broken femur, they took so long the injury formed Neural damage from lack of blood flow, Bone spurs and disfigured regrowth in the femoral neck. My experience with the army is being treated like a number and getting tossed out if there is any WIFF of anything being wrong with you.
I was stationed in Camp Humphreys South Korea with 2 ID, I can say outside my current reserve unit, Camp Humphreys was the best place I've been. I only had a 2 year active duty contract, so my second place was Fort Campbell with the 101st Airborne Division. I'm telling y'all it sucked ass, like the suicide there was atrocious.
Thanks for being awesome enough to see your own limitations and learn. And I was surprised how few F bombs you dropped being infantry. Out of 100 people in that same scenario, most of the other assholes would have been mad at the guy for hurting himself instead of reflecting. Reflection and gratitude for those who did the right things, and train up others the same. I remember the whole whistle-blower "protections" BS. Hope your next unit was better. All it takes is leadership being willing to call other leaders out instead of hold the O-line and the NCO line.
The problem in most militaries is the behavioral sink it creates. People that join the military tend to have a specific set of positive and negative mental traits that make them more likely to join. On top of that, many who join and don’t fit the status quo, those that could fix the toxic environment, decide that they don’t belong there; They either leave at the end of their first contract, get themselves medically discharged, or commit suicide. Edit: Most of the crows at Ft. Irwin are not actually crows, they’re ravens. That’s why they’re so much bigger. Though it is _hilarious_ to say that they’re just built different.
As a side note on this guy,'s words from his LT. Col.: That type of mentality is prevalent throughout the Military. The MCPON literally told Sailors (Who asked for mold treatment in the Barracks) to "Lower your standards" during one of his visits to the Washington, if I remember right.
I had a Major in the base mental health department that dumped patients onto the VA's lap. Rather than sitting down and talking with the patient, he would just threaten them, you either volunteer to go to the mental hospital, or I'll have you committed.
Hearing some of these stories honestly help me cope with the bullshit i had to put up with in the army too. The horror stories I got from unit that I could give might be smaller than what this guy went through but still helps.

Quick FYI for any non military members: leave in the military is actually one of the few rights we have. It’s a wild misconception that it’s a privilege, but if you were to make it a court martial thing they would absolutely lose because they need to have A REAL DAMN GOOD REASON to deny you leave, ESPECIALLY emergency leave.

@@marcthomas4488 So in the marine corps and navy we call it requesting mast. So you would go directly to a superior above the one that gives you problems. It has to be for legitimate issues, so for example let’s say your CO is the problem then you’d be able to go to your battalion commander and then so on and so forth. It gets into the weeds but yeah as long as your case is solid then you’re good

Yup. If you’ve been on on anxiety or depression meds for more than a year, you can’t serve in the military. You can potentially wipe medical documents but it will require pre-planning and if things are online then you may not be able to. The military told me I was over qualified for all the officer positions they had available but I wouldn’t make it past medical. With the rising care about mental health and people getting on medications, the military is gonna be in trouble if it doesn’t ease back on these rules.
I never made that connection before but now that I see it clear as a neon sign my jaw is on the floor. All the places i have been to over the years that called themself "behavioral health" places were incredibly toxic and dismissive. I'm growing bitter with the world because of the way i see other people have been treated, and how outright cruel a loud number of people have become over the past decade. Thinking happy thoughts to counteract the realities of the world is as useful as thoughts and prayers and it's not because of MY behavior!
I genuinely hope this guy doesn't receive any backlash from his unit for this.
That's what I'm afraid of with these videos. The more people speak out, the more retaliation that can be carried out on them by the people or situation that compelled them to speak out.
And it's bullshit too. Whenever you speak out, it's usually a flipped coin. Either the message works and change is pushed to rectify the issue (and that's assuming people listens but doesn't do much about it out of malice), or they bum rush you with negative output that pushes you into more withheld behaviors or worse.
Depends if his previous unit still has the same command team. However, usually higher staff always have this complex of bringing the issue back on you and saying "Why did you not report this issue sooner? You could have done something about this by contacting higher departments."

His only hope is a request mast (or whatever the army equivalent is) but even that will likely get him even further fucked because he "shouldn't have aired his units dirty laundry for everyone to see, you should have used the proper channels" which he kinda tried, but the "man" usually does listen to sense. My experience in the Army wasn't quite as horrible as this overall. But I did almost die from Appendicitis.
Medics thought I was faking, NCOs figured it was just a flu and told me to work through it. Only when the pain was so great I had trouble standing up did they take me to the ER.
There, the doctors thought I was faking because they couldn't find it in the imaging they took.
Nearly 2 weeks later they looked at the same image again, and found the inflammation. By this time I was delerious and hallucinating. I don't even remember my mom arriving at the hospital, she told me later that I was looking around the room frantically and asking why I could hear "animal noises".
It took me nearly 2 months to recover, and they sent me to Iraq 3 months later.
My mental health sharply declined, they diagnosed me with Adjustment Disorder, and they let me leave the next year.
Silver lining is that I get a decent monthly check for physical and cognitive issues related to my sepsis. Though it doesn't replace what I could've had if I had just gotten treated immediately.
The most toxic culture of "It will clear up." or "You're a young soldier, just grow up already!" It's the stupidest thing when your damn employers control your medical care.

If some guy is an obvious bloodthirsty sociopath who's bipolar, untreated, suicidal, and has no qualm about killing allies, i doubt they'll let him stay. Though on the flipside if he was just a crazy sadistic mofo who just wants to kill enemies, they'd likely gladly have him on there, which is scary.

Sounds like one of those "dead career" bases where they ship the bad officers until they're ready to leave. I know of several that are just complete nightmares to work on.
I think F. E. Warren AFB is probably one of those for the Air Force. When I got there, it started well. It ended horribly.
I served 21 years in the Army. I deployed to Iraq for 48 months from 2003 to 2011. I shared my mental health problems on a USASOC video to help others like me to get help. And 10 years later this is the reality of our Soldiers. This is the #1 reason why I moved my family overseas. My children will not serve in the US military as long as I have a pulse.
Make them as anti-military as possible within reason, tell them everything wrong with the military if they get even the thought to enlist.
Yeah my Dad was talked out of going by my grandfather but every veteran I’ve interacted with has had PTSD and I think that speaks to how terrible it is.
The omissions on the incident reports are one of the main reasons why so many people struggle to even get a VA rating after their discharges.
Facts they refused to acknowledge my PTSD because it was removed from my one therapy session I’d had. I got a “failure to adjust” and thus I’ll never qualify for service disability.
Man that "why don't you just be that different leader." is so spot on. We had a guidance counselor from a college tell us this same thing when he came to visit school and then said sadly it doesn't work that way and people want revenge so they punish others. He went on talking about people becoming the evil teacher in a "well I had to do this horrible paper so I'll make all my students do this horrible paper." It was advice and a warning as the one psych 101 professor was like if you were a psychologist you'd know this.
And when you do you get abused because you dont play their toxic games :/ damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Restaurant industry in a nutshell. So many chefs eat so much shit coming up they love passing it back down when they get the chance. Add the stress of the job, weird and long hours, and common drug and alchohol abuse, I’ve lost some friends.
This is a really horrific comparison but it's the same mentality of the "Dancing boys" in Afghanistan they themselves were molested and raped as boys so when they became men they in turn when they grew up did the same thing.

It hit me like a truck that I could not mentally fight it, worse thing is the upsides of the usmc is so rewarding that not being able to take the bullshit is my lowest point in life so far. My boy joined back in 2017, just got out earlier this year and spent most of his time in the army at ft Bliss.
The anime dude you interviewed here was a pvt at the time of the blue on blue incident and did not have direct access to the story, unlike my friend. The tank incident was not "swept under rug", the tank commander who did not PID the tank and ordered his gunner to fire on it ended up getting court martialed. Also, the the tank was shot TWICE, not just once. And the tank commander who was in the tank which was hit was killed in the accident, not just injured or riddled with shrapnel. He had his entire arm blown off, and his lung collapsed, he died during transit to hospital. Also my friend was woken up at late at night to go find the bore sight kit which the Bradley shot into orbit lmao he has a pic of him and a bunch of other dudes kneeling / posing with it out in the in the desert from once they found it lmao
Overall tho my amigo hated bliss and is happy to be out of El Paso and out of the army. Just wanted to correct some info that this anime lad most likely didn't have access to at the time

Bliss is riddled with rumors because these things happen often. I'm fairly confident, leadership prefers the underbreath rumors because quite often they end up casting smaller shadows than the real story, where they are often culprits.
I can say this as an active duty soldier, some if not most units are toxic in their own way. Just remember, your contract ends.

There are a couple of bases in the US that are just notoriously awful, and they're so large that the culture can't be changed by ordinary changes in leadership. Without solid leadership from the top correcting the issue, the problems will expand and the US Army will begin to noticeably suffer from the same problems the Russians are experiencing in the field.

As for the idea of being a therapist, I have considered it, and at one point almost changed my college major from computer science to psychology. It's a decision I'm still thinking about now, as both of these fields are absolutely fascinating to me.

i can see it too, although i am not a therapist in any way.. but i have helped a few people from suicide and they gone to get professional help as a 12 year old at that time not much i could really do but to encourage them, talk to them, related to them which i won't say any of their stories i have heard. although the ones i couldn't save these 6 words still haunt me til this day and im 27 (what could i have done better) some of these people were overseas in a different country and met online through games so i didn't know who to even contact about this..
i don't do that stuff anymore because of their stories drained me a lot and some of the nightmares from their words haunt me even til this day..

@@sgtmuffinbadger6147 I agree. The soldiering wasn't much of an issue in my unit. We had a "good Ole boys club" that made it a large problem for the rest of the soldiers to get by and not go crazy.

Near the end of my enlistment, I was having severe panic attacks at least monthly. My team leader openly mocked my panic attacks in the middle of the kitchen (we’re cooks) and no one said anything. My squad leader did nothing about it, and I was scared to take it higher because I knew nothing would happen and it’d lead to retaliation. This was when I was getting med boarded for sever anxiety.

I am in the Navy myself and everything he said is more accurate than anyone wants to admit. The best advice I can give is that if you know someone who is serving check up on them. It doesn't matter if they miss it because of work, a missed call is still valuable. Compassion from others and the reminder of their love is the best thing that can help service members. Few service members join solely because they are patriots, most of them join because they want to improve their lives and the lives of those that rely on them. Speaking as someone who joined for the express purpose of feeding a family I can say that nothing gives us more strength than those we care for being there for us.

@@QuantemDeconstructor Command structure allowing egomaniacs to hold ultimate control in an area without oversight of any kind, even by their higher ups, is the main cause of a place like Fort Bliss. When a General notices the problems, and cannot FIX the problems, there is a systemic issue.
This was eye-opening. My friend, a veteran who was deployed to the Middle East until recently, sent me this video. I haven’t known that many people who have served, so this gives a very revealing look at the culture of a mismanaged unit and how having the wrong superiors can end in death. It’s one thing to try to tough it out and encourage others to do the same, but when people have the power to make things less shitty for their subordinates, they have no excuse not to do so. The lack of accountability all around must be maddening. I also love how the host comforted the guest at the end when he talked about how he felt like he was turning into the same shitty type of person as the officers he despised. It was heartwarming. I wish the best for this dude, and I hope someone with enough power realizes that this gross mismanagement and callousness is killing people in several ways.
George Orwell predicted this. The gist of his essay "You and the Atomic Bomb" was that nuclear weapons making genuine wars impossible to fight would lead to countries' government and military leadership having no-one to take out their sadistic urges on but their own subjects.
At Fort Polk I’ve had a lot of toxic leadership for my time being in but I’m blessed I started to get better leadership. Also good friends really does make the time being in worth it so does having good leadership that also cares about their soldiers . Towards the end I’m glad I was able to become the leader I wanted to have when I first got to my unit.

Right now I got a couple of new soldiers I'm sponsoring and I'm doing everything possible to make sure that their transition here is better for them than it was for me

When he said "you can ask anyone in the Army, what's worse? A toxic soldier or a Toxic Leader?" And without missing a beat, I said toxic leader because even if I havent experienced it at my unit, all it takes is one toxic leader to not give a shit about Joes and be abusive and the toxic culture will begin to spread like a cancer thought the unit. People who can recognize it will either leave the unit, leave the Army or try to muscle through it and hope not to replicate it. What's worse is that you can be exposed to it, hate it, become it without realizing it, PCS away from the local toxic leadership environment and pass it off to another unit. It's a viscous cycle that is worse in some units rather than others but it's bad enough thoughout at least the Army (don't know about the other branches, I think the USMC has a similarish problem but Marines are too high on their own supply to address it but I could be wrong), that it's near memedom how bad it gets. I guess we have to laugh not to cry.
Toxic leadership destroys everything it touches

Something you could do to alleviate that guilt, if you haven't already, is go apologize to the guy you told to fuck off. Admitting you realized what you did wrong to the one you did the wrong to helps both parties move past the situation.
The single most eye opening event in my military service was in basic training, when the human personification of West Virginia went up to the group of urban black guys at the end of basic and said "y'all are the first black people I've ever talked to, and y'all aren't as bad as they say"

as a kid I wanted to join the airforce, but now that I know how bad working conditions are in millitary are. I think knowing these things are one of the reasons why the military is constantly needing peaple to work. I feel like if working conditions where a little better,and the government actualy cared about what the bad leaders where doing less peaple would commit suicide during service.
While the Airforce has its problems, that and the coast guard are actually the best branches to join.
The Army really is a cesspool and my entire experience was extremely negative. My therapists in Behavioral Health were so unprofessional and abusive they gave me PTSD and nearly drove me to suicide. I transitioned directly into homelessness and still regret not going through with it. This happened in 2021.

@@marz.6102 I'm part of a military women's group on Facebook and there are a lot of people on there who are struggling due to their mental health. It's likely because they got stuck in a bad job (you can't choose), are in a toxic unit, are overworked (maintenance), or are struggling due to personal reasons. The Air Force does treat their people better but they're still not immune to the toxic leadership issue which is the #1 reason why the military is failing right now.

I feel like this guy would get along with Zach from Mikeburnfire. The channel consists of two veterans from different branches of the military who typically share their shitty experiences from the military. Zach was stationed in Fort Polk, which is apparently also one of “those” military bases where if you’re sent there, you wouldn’t want to reenlist. Their stories are funny, but God some of them are really depressing, such as how he has received multiple concussions in a row, so they kind of swept everything under the rug and let him be instead of reporting it and taking responsibility.
That quote about guilt and regret was what I needed to hear. I've never known how to deal with it for so long, almost thirty years old, and today you quoted the words I wish I heard ten years ago.
Stories like this make me realize that the phrase "Thank you for your service" has a much deeper meaning than people give it.

I was in Marine Corps boot camp for the past 4 months. I was in MCRD San Diego. I got medically discharged. I fractured my tibia, thankfully didn’t need to get surgery but I was close. Going through everything there I learned that it doesn’t matter who or what you are, you can always be corrupt. It doesn’t matter how high up you are or how formal or professional your organization is, there’s always the potential for corruption, negligence, abuse, and any other number of bad things. People, recruits have died in training at that base. Drowning, heat stroke suicide, and like this guy said it gets swept under the rug. The general population, most civilians have no idea shit like that has happened but it has. They’ve made improvements over the years but my point is corruption can be found anywhere. The tip of the tip, the highest of high up people can be corrupt.
Man I can definitely understand that heartbreak. Had a fellow shipmate jump off the aft deck of his carrier and he wasn’t found again. That shit Sears into your mind and just doesn’t budge.

Good to listen the lower enlisted perspective and listening to this soldier’s experience and how each service has its own twists on situations that just churn up good people. Sadly, it’s been my observation the army is committed to numbers game out of all of the services. Regardless of service, each branch does a brilliant job of chewing up good leaders.
Well the thing is even from a numbers game point of view this makes little sense.
It is true that in peacetime leaders aren't going to be rotated out like they are in wartime (which btw is almost a requirement for an effective army, you want to rotate leaders in and out even if they are doing a decent job) but this is having a disproportionate effect on the force's readiness and effectiveness.
The US is expeditionary in nature, using a professional army. By it's very definition your entire combat effectiveness relies of having an effective combat structure with a high level of competency, independence and motivation from the lowest end of your army. Unlike a conscript army, you need a professional army to be able to punch way above it's weight as you can't just relegate the dirty jobs to barely paid mobniks, and plug the holes with special forces.
But what is happening here is that in an effort to save a few dozen thousands bucks in command logistics and oversight apparatus, you are letting maybe a dozen dudes render and entire army combat ineffective. It also adds extra piling costs in maintenance for training replacements, punches a hole into the recruitment numbers, and lowers soldier effectiveness across the entire nation as no one feels compelled to go above and beyond in such an environment.
It only seems like a better option on the paper of some accountant somewhere, because the hidden costs aren't factored into the equation up until it is far too late.
It seems so easy to put it under the rug. I'm waiting for what is coming out of these short yet eye-opening, genuine conversations with people who have gone through a lot and are willing to speak out about these things.
Seeing how you can just go around and talk to people who teach out to you is inspiring, the world needs more people to listen with their hearts like you do. People this day and age have grown so cynical and cold to the cries of the world. Thank you for taking the time to give these people a voice or just an outlet. Please don't over stress yourself though

My dad has stories like this dating all the way back to just pre Vietnam era. He was Australian special forces and he spent a lot of time with the US training and deployed. He said to me that if you’re anything below an NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) then it was cheaper and easier for them if you died on the patrol then if you came back without your leg

When you are dishonorably discharged the military can deny you benefits etc this happened to alot of people who never got home VA loans after ww2 and vietnam because they were scrutinized more than other soldiers to get them out.

And the mocking of Presidents especially; the only time such mocking is not permitted is in formal settings and when being interviewed for pubic consumption.
Of course, on the book you're not supposed to speak in contempt of your leaders, but I'm speaking of between buddies -it feels like you never hanged around in the mess hall. Or the decaf. Or the bar.

If a group of guys act and talk like they absolutely hate each other, they're best friends. Guys don't talk to people they hate.
The reason I watch these videos is to understand what other people go through. Whether it be life altering conditions/illnesses, life threatening environments or just general struggle and stress. I suffer from very bad stress and anxiety, but I whenever my parents ask if I'm depressed I generally avoid the topic and say the two words that people know are not their true meaning "I'm fine". Normally I also keep to myself and avoid talking to people about problems I face (hence the very bad stress and anxiety) especially when someone I know is depressed and I push my feelings and own emotions all the way back and support them. I appreciate that Azeal does these videos because I can know that I am not the only one in my position, that there are others who are as well. Even if it's worse or better, it's still nice knowing that people are in these positions or have these experiences but manage to push through.

Former avi tech for the USMC. They (brass and some higher enlisted) will (unless they’re the good ones) not give a fuck about you. Doesnt matter the job, you are replaceable. Enlisting was a great choice in my life, but i saw some downright fuckery while in and not the good kind. You hear these stories in every branch. If you think about joining find your real brothers/sisters in whatever branch you join. They will get you through so much bs and the vice versa. If you have a friend thats a vet give them a call and see if they’re okay.

these videos remind me that i am not alone and that i can relate to others. i left the military after 6 years just a couple months ago... well i didn't leave on my own.. i was medically retired due to service related injuries and was forced out. moved back with my parents into a town and state that i've grown disgusted of over the years. my family doesn't feel like family and my friends no longer feel like friends. but videos like these remind me that i am not alone. there are others who feel the same way i do and who are fighting the same battle. it is not something i wish upon others, in fact (may sound weird) i wish i were the only one with this problem because this is an awful feeling to experience. being surrounded by people who will NEVER understand.

Hey my uncle was at Fort Bliss at the end of his years in service. he hated it but he found silver linings. got himself a loyal ass rescue dog and now he gets paid 100% disability as a nomad around the US
the thing that really kills me about stories like his is that hearing him talk about leadership being borderline hostile, the shitty conditions, and especially getting blacklisted for seeking help when you're going through something, it's like I'm hearing myself talking. It's the same story from different mouths, and I've been in therapy with folks from other bases and whenever I talk about how hard it is just to get help they all chime in with similar stories, it is this bad everywhere. There's just something fundamentally wrong in the military and anyone can tell you that things are fucked but it never changes
Big facts right here. I'm at a different unit and I can say that toxic leadership is half the problem. A year ago, our company and my platoon was squared away. When we got a new commander, it got worse. When we got a new 1SG, everyone be getting out or changing MOS. As much as I miss being on line with my guys, I don't miss the leadership.

So real talk I’ve experienced all of these types of toxic leaders and more. I was made a target of the chain of command due to trying and attempting to fix these issues.
This corruption spans from the lowest levels of NCO leadership all the way to the Commanding Officer of fort bliss. It is absolutely insane and there were more times than I could count where myself or others seriously considered ways to kill our leadership.
Hearing this guy finally come out and expose this kinda stuff...It kinda inspires me to do the same. Hearing this almost brought me to tears just because of how much I can relate. I wasnt in the army, but in the navy. Any chance I could meet up somewhere and talk about it as well? I dont know how you arrange this kinda thing, but i'm willing to jump through hoops to make it work

My first duty station was Ft Bliss, 2000-2004. I was with Garrison Command and later with the MP Battalion. Suicides were rare on post, they were more worried about cartels coming over and shooting the place up (which had happened). Training accidents were rare also. Mc Gregor Range was constantly in use also.
I was later in 1st Armor 07-09 back in Baumholder and in Iraq. Last surge brigade. We were all pretty tight then. Someone got beat up in town by the turks? Damn near the whole brigade was hunting for them.
The only place I've been that was anywhere close to as bad was in Seoul. 8th PERSCOM at the time, now just a part of 8th Army G1. Even the Commander and 1SG were only out to get a good OER or NCOER. No one coached lower enlisted, even for SGTs time training. Only team that did was my team, the 6 shop. We even invited other sections to study and train with us. And SFC Washington was a PENTAGON guy. We were the only section to show ip to soldier of the month boards. Everyone else was fend for yourself and the soldiers were treated as burdens by the NCOs.
I got out in 2012. Sounds to me like I got while the gettin was good.

I would like to apologize in advance for the actions of Tyrone Brown. He was my 1st sgt. at Fort Eustis and I dont know what his rank is currently.
When I was still in the Army he lied to me and told me I couldn't go to hazmat school because I wasn't a Sgt. This was because he's extremely incompetent and bad at talent management. He wanted me to shut down the mailroom for a week and drive to the field even though it wasn't an important mission and ended up being cancelled. He also likes to create "committees" and always assign the same soldiers in alphabetical order to them, thus causing them to be overworked. He seemed like a nice guy until his actions told me otherwise.
I was actually in an online group with someone who came out of the military consumed by that horrible "tough guy" mentality. It made them paranoid, led them down conspiracy rabbit holes, and all around gave them the most horrid attitude towards life. I blocked out a lot of what they said to me, but basically they had it in their head that since I was and am trying to support people and help the world, that I'm a fool and I'll be killed and forgotten because I don't want to hurt people. Even to defend myself.
I will not accept anyone telling me that I have no right to speak ill of military culture because I'm a civilian: military or not, we are still human beings capable of so much. To be able to recognize and escape such an awful mindset takes a will of steel: service to our country should not cost one their humanity. Empathy and understanding are our greatest strengths: no one has any right to strip those away.

Having that mentality is a necessity in the military to keep your sanity. The issue is turning it off after getting out. Everyone that has gotten out no matter how shitty it was will tell you they would do it again, or miss it. It does hold true if you didn't serve you wouldn't understand, but I do agree everyone deserves to be treated as a human.
Corrupt base? this is 99% of my experience at EVERY base 2001 - 2005
Damn, if I was the suicidal one there I'd have started by taking out the sarge first. Feels almost scary to think about how strong this guy is mentally to not have fragged the sarge.
What he stated throughout this is exactly the reason I got out when I had the opportunity, too many deaths, too much suffering, not enough time or ability to self improve.

Man, I've never felt something so relatable.
Ive never had the ability to put the emotions he expressed into words. People ask why it seems that my emotions are jaded. Like i dont care about other people and their problems and he explained it perfectly. The lifestyle of the army and the higher ups that you work under really do tear you down to the point where you reall just dont give the slightest s!@t anymore. Its tough man but you putting all these things into words will help not only yourself but many of our buddies who are having problems by letting them know their not alone. Thank you

I'm not going to lie, after hearing stories like this and the stories from Zach over at Mikeburnfire's channel, I'm kinda glad I didn't make it into the military.

Reminds me of a time just a couple years ago, I work aircraft maintenance in the Airforce. One day we're out on the flight line, trying to get a plane fixed so it can go up and do some training mission or some shit. Engine troops are on the number 3 engine, they having cowlings (the shell around the engine itself) opened up on both sides so the engine is totally exposed. There's like 6 of these guys, one on each side of the engine and a few sitting underneath it all working on figuring out the issue on it. Suddenly, I hear a loud whirring and compressed air noise that sounds suspiciously like an engine spooling up to start, and sure enough all of those jet troops are frantically getting as far from the engine as they can while the crew chief is on comms with the flgiht crew yelling at the top of his lungs into the mike screaming at them to stop the engine start because theres still people directly fucking under it, if they hadnt stopped it those side cowlings would have blown off and slammed into them, killing or severely injuring them and probably would have thrown the people under it a good few hundred feet. sergeant goes running up the stand and starts just tearing the flight crew an asshole for a good 15 minutes, which was great. Fast forward a couple days, turns out nothing past getting yelled at by a couple of maintenance sergeants and some of the dudes they almost fucking killed happened to them. Far as I know, theyre still flying planes. Its wild how much stupid shit happens in the military and just gets swept under the rug because it would expose the commanders of these units as being the incompetent, shitty piles of garbage they really are.

My father was in the army and sadly it hasn't changed much since then. Seems even worse now.
I'm just saying. I've been an EMT since I got out of the army. I've collected my fair share of bad calls. But this was harder to watch than any of the interviews where people talked about bad calls, or death, or any of the other messed up stuff I was able to relate to.

Deep, deep shit and it's insane to hear about. I had a second cousin in the Aus military who offed himself a few years back, it's wild hearing about how often this shit can happen in some military environments.
Also the Joker model was a fitting choice for this somehow.
After hearing all these stories about these bases I honestly don't know which one of them is worse.
Fort Polk or Fork Bliss
Fort Polk sounded astonishingly incompetent in the stories I've heard, Fort Bliss sounds like it's full of malicious bastards that are deliberately making people miserable.

Polk at least is not a heavy unit where you are in motorpools 24/7 with Bradley's and Strykers thank god
My uncle retired some five years ago or so and he is a functional alcoholic. He was a Master Sergeant or Major Sergent or whatever MSG stands for and he never talked about his time there other than when he was actually stationed in other countries. The few questions I’ve asked him about stuff he normally gives a brief and/or vague answer to before changing the subject. I guess I know why now. Who wants to talk about that shit to their nephew who always viewed you as a hero? Maybe I should have a conversation about it now that I’m twenty one and seen some shit myself. Might help him get something off his chest.

Had pretty much the same experience at Ft Leonardwood Missouri in my engineering battalion. I joined the US ARMY in 2018 and its the same way there as well.
D31st Engineering Battalion isn't much better.
I got injured and was due for surgery day 1 of the injury and the army basically told me to PISS OFF and go home. Broke my femur and they gave me ibuprofen and crutches and then threw me out.
Got home and have ZERO ASSISTANCE out of the gate and had to live my life with no help with a broken femur, they took so long the injury formed Neural damage from lack of blood flow, Bone spurs and disfigured regrowth in the femoral neck.
My experience with the army is being treated like a number and getting tossed out if there is any WIFF of anything being wrong with you.

I was stationed in Camp Humphreys South Korea with 2 ID, I can say outside my current reserve unit, Camp Humphreys was the best place I've been. I only had a 2 year active duty contract, so my second place was Fort Campbell with the 101st Airborne Division. I'm telling y'all it sucked ass, like the suicide there was atrocious.

Thanks for being awesome enough to see your own limitations and learn. And I was surprised how few F bombs you dropped being infantry. Out of 100 people in that same scenario, most of the other assholes would have been mad at the guy for hurting himself instead of reflecting. Reflection and gratitude for those who did the right things, and train up others the same. I remember the whole whistle-blower "protections" BS. Hope your next unit was better. All it takes is leadership being willing to call other leaders out instead of hold the O-line and the NCO line.

I know all branches have their issues. But hearing this and my time in and interactions with other branches makes me so thankful I went uscg.
The problem in most militaries is the behavioral sink it creates. People that join the military tend to have a specific set of positive and negative mental traits that make them more likely to join. On top of that, many who join and don’t fit the status quo, those that could fix the toxic environment, decide that they don’t belong there; They either leave at the end of their first contract, get themselves medically discharged, or commit suicide.
Edit: Most of the crows at Ft. Irwin are not actually crows, they’re ravens. That’s why they’re so much bigger. Though it is _hilarious_ to say that they’re just built different.
As a side note on this guy,'s words from his LT. Col.: That type of mentality is prevalent throughout the Military. The MCPON literally told Sailors (Who asked for mold treatment in the Barracks) to "Lower your standards" during one of his visits to the Washington, if I remember right.

I had a Major in the base mental health department that dumped patients onto the VA's lap. Rather than sitting down and talking with the patient, he would just threaten them, you either volunteer to go to the mental hospital, or I'll have you committed.
Hearing some of these stories honestly help me cope with the bullshit i had to put up with in the army too. The horror stories I got from unit that I could give might be smaller than what this guy went through but still helps.
