absolutely love this song. when i heard this for the first time, nothing could have been more perfect. i was in the prime location at the best time.. listening to the best song at that specific moment.
All who wander are not lost...the message of this gorgeous harmony of voices and music strikes a chord with anyone who has travelled and found something in a moment they will never recapture again. The smile at the end says it all. Perfection 😍
James is so amazing as a backup vocalist, just realized this because I loved hearing him with Oberst backing up Ward here and was reminded of when James backs up Ward. Ward has freaky thumbs, still my favourite musician for a while.
This was definitely one of my favorite albums of last year. I realized how much James' and Ward's voices contrast each other while Oberst is kind of in between the two. All four of them playing together makes me really happy. I hope they release more music together.
The Temazcal (the Nahuatl temazcalli 'home steam' by temaz 'steam' and calli 'home') is a steam bath, own in the cultures of Mexico and Central America. The term refers both to the place where it is practiced, as the event in which they participate. The equivalent name in Mayan zumpul-che, in Mixteco Nihi.
Putting on my power, righteous as a rose Dynamite the mountain, now I'm walking up the road The love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all The dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball Blew open my mind, now it's an empty room Swinging in the hammock, dogs are walking across the roof I watch you braid your hair, you're from another time When the earth wasn't so angry And god was on our side Searching west and east And all points in-between Underneath the lines of thought You're there and then you're not The mayans stole tomorrow, hid it underground We come with heavy magnets but it still hasn't been found I'm sweating out my secrets in the temazcal They're screaming in the calle that there are stars about to fall Looking through the trees Cities and the seas Things we've seen Ovnis on the lawn They're there and then they're gone There and then they're gone Searching west and east All points in between And underneath the hand of god You're there and then you're not
Really dope songwriting.. starts on the iii and goes to the major II, then back through again, before it goes to the root. Sick little line M Ward plays, too, he's got a great way with making very simple ideas like following the chords become really hot little lead lines
I love this so much. This band is everything every band should be. Just four different guys who's similarity is music. I love how different their voices are, but when they all sing together, its still beautiful. I'm tired of bands where all the singers have the SAME voice. Just when I thought I was unfortunate for living in the 2000s, MOF gives me hope that good music is still alive.
Conor, Jim and M.Ward are just outstanding - this goes without say. However, Mike Mogis is fascinating, mysterious, and ultra-talented man! The four of them are perfectly complementary.
This is an amazing version of this song, though I personally love both. The song in itself is amazing. If I can ever write something this good I will be pleased with my life.
@MrHAVOCtheMAN a temazcal is a ceremonial sauna that was used by the Mayans and the other Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Its uses included things like healing and purifying yourself after battle.
i find it very interesting that m. ward sings lead in this video instead of conor like on the album. amazing song. i really enjoy the album. great work guys.
Unbelievable songwriting. I ran across Jim James while browsing through music months ago and he coincidentally goes and forms a band with Conor Oberst who I've been listening to for ages. MOF is like a dream come true. It's the exact type of music I've been wanting to find. Fantastic job, I'd love to do some art for these guys some day, their music is endlessly inspiring.
cool thats what i figured you can really see it in dear god. i just think this album is such an amazing representation of the best parts of each of these guys - I appreciate each of their styles so much
I love this session version more than the album version. It’s Matt’s voice that does it for me., just my opinion but it sounds soo much better than Connor’s for the verses. I’ve revisited this video often throughout the years…
@BrightEyesAtheist that reminds me of the song Waste of Paint by Bright Eyes. There's a verse at the end where he talks about wanting to raise his voice in the choir, but he feels like he can't.
Very true. Fun fact: he wears them because his eyes are incredibly sensitive and I'd imagine the lighting rig from the video crew was bothering him. So they're badass and functional!
I think the guitar sounds better in this version for some reason, and M. Wards' singing in this vid and Conors singing on the CD are definately different, so I don't know if I can say one or the other is better. I do like this version though, and it's cool to see them all lay the tracks at the same time together.
Daniel - there are rumours that a new LP is in the works also a Monster of Folk movie (Conor wrote a script) :) I just hope it comes soon and that they put out the album even if they don't get the movie done...
On the album version it sounds like Conor sings but in the video it is M. Ward. Not sure if that is true but that is how it sounds and looks but the video.
The random song TikTok flags for copyright infringement. I love it. If Dylan won the Nobel Prize for incorporating poetry in popular music, Conor should get it for incorporating philosophy. That’s why they were not the same. One didn’t have to rhyme to get his point across. God bless timeless folk music.
i love jim james, and my morning jacket, and monsters of folk, and m.ward's solo stuff, and some of bright eyes less-emo stuff. i LOVE m.ward and jim james, together, harmonizing...its the sounds of heaven.
@ubertomadachi According to the International Phonetic Alphabeth (IPA) (in Spanish AFI) Temazcal is pronounced [ te maθ 'kal ] I`m sorry, I don`t know another way to explain it. I`m from Spain, and it`s quite simple for me to pronounce it, but difficult to explain....
We heard the song on the Roots album and just had to find out more about Monsters of Folk...Damn was We sleeping I feel bad about just finding out about them. The Old Shall become the new..It Folk for the NEW AGE...Wow cats just made 2 new Fans. Just a thought from The Otherz
Mike Mogis is just the silent mastermind that makes takes this song some place beyond wherever they had it
Mogis has been alongside Conor for so long. He’s an important human being.
Mogis is a fucking genius
Sycamore Shade is a supercool name!
M ward makes this song. Bottom line
Mike on the strings is the difference maker
I love the harmonizing of Conor and Jim's voice. And I love this version. It's amazing how they could rotate like that and each version is great!
absolutely love this song.
when i heard this for the first time,
nothing could have been more perfect.
i was in the prime location at the best time..
listening to the best song at that specific moment.
This is seriously one of the most badass sounding songs. The lyrics are like a chiller version of Cortez the Killer. The harmonies are killer.
nice connection
This video is a peak experience. The vibe is so good. The song so perfectly itself, so beautiful.
Still coming here when i need it
Yep
I wish so much they would've done another album. Every song they did was so good. True talents all of them. Monsters.
This song helped me out through some really depressing moments...
I'm thankful for these guys, honestly.
wish they still made music together...we need it here in 2020
Ive read an article few years ago that they will continue, but apparently nothing came out of it.
There has to be so much extra MOF footage. At the end, if this video kept playing and we saw everything afterward. Imagine that documentary
sends chills down my spine every time I hear this version.
All who wander are not lost...the message of this gorgeous harmony of voices and music strikes a chord with anyone who has travelled and found something in a moment they will never recapture again. The smile at the end says it all. Perfection 😍
Why isn’t this a thing....? There it is, beauty right in front of you, in the whispers of wind and nobody to hear it. Great record.
True beauty
The world needs this band, they are nowhere its only old videos
I feel like a kid again when I listen to this song, like things are ok
James is so amazing as a backup vocalist, just realized this because I loved hearing him with Oberst backing up Ward here and was reminded of when James backs up Ward.
Ward has freaky thumbs, still my favourite musician for a while.
i love love love love love this. jim james and m ward together...their voices. man. its like instant soul medicine.
Lucky as hell. I got to see them live October 2009 in Chicago. Can't believe it's been over ten years
Great music. not overproduced. just homegrown goodness. love it! Seein em on 11/11 in ATL.
This was definitely one of my favorite albums of last year. I realized how much James' and Ward's voices contrast each other while Oberst is kind of in between the two. All four of them playing together makes me really happy. I hope they release more music together.
Why can't I like this song every time I return to this page and listen to it?
Which is pretty much a lot.
conors' collings is so beautiful... oh my gosh... love all these guys so much
Those lads really know how to harmonize! Will never get sick of this song... For ever ever... For ever ever? For ever ever!

Putting on my power, righteous as a rose
Dynamite the mountain, now I'm walking up the road
The love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all
The dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball
Blew open my mind, now it's an empty room
Swinging in the hammock, dogs are walking across the roof
I watch you braid your hair, you're from another time
When the earth wasn't so angry
And god was on our side
Searching west and east
And all points in-between
Underneath the lines of thought
You're there and then you're not
The mayans stole tomorrow, hid it underground
We come with heavy magnets but it still hasn't been found
I'm sweating out my secrets in the temazcal
They're screaming in the calle that there are stars about to fall
Looking through the trees
Cities and the seas
Things we've seen
Ovnis on the lawn
They're there and then they're gone
There and then they're gone
Searching west and east
All points in between
And underneath the hand of god
You're there and then you're not
Awesome. But I believe it’s “comb with heavy magnets”, not “come with”. I figured they had metal detectors in mind when they wrote it :)
The way you describe the voices of M. Ward and Jim James are deliciously accurate
I have MOF as a Pandora Station, and lately....... they have made my crazy trip we call life much more pleasurable.
This sucks
Awesome. Amazing to see all of the layers of sound and verve from only guitars and vocals. Well done peeps.
Really dope songwriting.. starts on the iii and goes to the major II, then back through again, before it goes to the root. Sick little line M Ward plays, too, he's got a great way with making very simple ideas like following the chords become really hot little lead lines
The way the sound changes with "armies on the lawn" makes this song instantly more fascinating
I love this so much. This band is everything every band should be. Just four different guys who's similarity is music. it does have 6 courses as opposed ot the usual four...sounds incredible. the vocal recording quality is so good
I love that deep voice!! Gorgeous sound.
pretty awesome that they switch singing duties for different recordings and the song still flows... cant decide which version i like better
Gorgeous... and crumply healing... THANKSSSXXXX
@MrHAVOCtheMAN a temazcal is a ceremonial sauna that was used by the Mayans and the other Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. Its uses included things like healing and purifying yourself after battle.
what an amazing sound, voice, everything its awesome great job
i find it very interesting that m. ward sings lead in this video instead of conor like on the album. amazing song. i really enjoy the album. great work guys.

holy crap! this is heaven! doesnt get any better then this! i would love to see them in concert .. great job on the back up vocals as well
Good job guy's I love the sound and all the equipment you all have, wow I could only wish to have a studio like that. Keep up the good work.
i agree 100% i did know of bright eyes and jim james before this band tho i love them all and all the songs great stuff.
I love this session version more than the album version. It’s Matt’s voice that does it for me., just my opinion but it sounds soo much better than Connor’s for the verses. I’ve revisited this video often throughout the years…
100% agreed, it gives the song that much more depth.
lovely song i just love it its... amazing... just amazing
aww jim's adorable smile at the end warms my heart. he smiles like a kid.
that´s what i´m talking about. Great band, great guys....great music....
I was just about to comment on JJ's little smile at the end. My fav part.
you guys are really having fun I love it :)
Amazing song. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it.
@BrightEyesAtheist that reminds me of the song Waste of Paint by Bright Eyes.
There's a verse at the end where he talks about wanting to raise his voice in the choir, but he feels like he can't.
I love jim james smile in the end, so cute! =)
either way, yim yones is a master of harmony. all these fellers kick ass on this one no matter whose singing. best song on the album i say
Very true. Fun fact: he wears them because his eyes are incredibly sensitive and I'd imagine the lighting rig from the video crew was bothering him. So they're badass and functional!
They all have such different voices and they sound amazing together
This brings me back, reminds me of slower smashing pumpkins. I really love this song, every note and word, absolutly brilliant.
the greatest collaboration since peanut butter and chocolate first hooked up. my mind = blown
Ahhh so good! I can't wait to see you guys in London!
very delicate song. also, that mandolin-like-thing mogis is playing looks awesome
This version rocks. Pretty much all the jams these dudes put out are fucken awsome.
Man, Monsters of Folk are the best supergroup out right now.
Always loved this tune
this is such incredibly chill jamming
lovin the combo of conors words plus m wards voice
@vanceoliver An electric mandolin I think, sounds like he's running it through some reverb with a shimmer setting.
just saw him in Mexico City in his solo tour.. it was amazing
merci JOSE pour ce partage j'adore leur voix great !!!5*****
Love this song! Any others out there that compare?
monsters of folk were amazing in concert. saw them last fall
Great song. Love the video as well. Look forward to more!
I think I've listened to this song 15 times today. Tomorrow--maybe It'll get to twenty.
M Ward, that man has a voice.
WOAH I knew the voice was similar oh and the background noises
@brownteal21 You are correct, sir. They switched up the vocals on a couple of these music videos.
I think the guitar sounds better in this version for some reason, and M. Wards' singing in this vid and Conors singing on the CD are definately different, so I don't know if I can say one or the other is better. I do like this version though, and it's cool to see them all lay the tracks at the same time together.
so fucking good, just pray they make another album someday
Daniel - there are rumours that a new LP is in the works also a Monster of Folk movie (Conor wrote a script) :)
I just hope it comes soon and that they put out the album even if they don't get the movie done...
Like The Traveling Wilburys, short lived, but fun while it lasted.
and like the traveling wilburys so damn good
Damn! one of the best folk songs ever!
haha Jim's face at the end. I simply love him more for that :D
They're all so good, seriously.
Wow, I like this one even better than the album version. Such a lovely song.
On the album version it sounds like Conor sings but in the video it is M. Ward. Not sure if that is true but that is how it sounds and looks but the video.
I can't stop replaying
I love hearing M Ward singing this.. What a voice!
haha Oberst and James have hilarious chemistry, I love how excited they are at the end
Sounds GREAT!!!
Those guitars are mind-blowing.
Just beautiful
This is so great!
Makes me even more excited about the forthcoming concert :D
i love jim james, and my morning jacket, and monsters of folk, and m.ward's solo stuff, and some of bright eyes less-emo stuff. i LOVE m.ward and jim james, together, harmonizing...its the sounds of heaven.
So amazing. So amazing
That tone... oh my god. That ES-335 is KILLING ME.
eu fui em algum céu e voltei com esse som..
Really good song. =) Love it.
my god. listening to this with headphones on . . . it's like being taken to a completely different time.
