It wasnt that Iroh was always pure, but that he realized that the path the fire nation was taking was the immoral one. He even had to lose his only son in order to come to that realization. Iroh is not pure or perfect, but a person who is wise due to self-reflection.

i thought it was funny that metal bending was because you are bending the earth thats still inside metal but wouldn't all earthly elements like metal hell even diamonds count as part of earth? or is it just like rocks and dirt that count as earth for bending?
but this begs the question what parts of earth are bendable? since i remember in the last airbender they were able to bend coal so what earthly elements are off limits? cause technically all elements are earthly including water

Remember when Aang had his hopes shattered after coming upon the bleached skeleton of his former teacher, and only friend, in his completely obliterated former home, and he was so traumatized it sent him into a fit of rage that endangered his only remaining friends and one had to risk her life to try and calm him down?
Remember when Ba Sing Se, the supposed safe haven for the Aang's group, turned out to be a horrific dictatorship run by a shadow government which used torture and hypnosis to keep its citizens in fear and order, while a puppet monarch sat unaware of said horrors? Then Jet, a former 'ally' of Aang was kidnapped and hypnotized, then forced to fight and was struck down. Then, when told he was going to be okay, Toph said "I can feel when people are lying," and the gang had to face the fact that a man had just died who they very personally knew?
Remember Azula's sudden promotion to leader of the Fire Nation, followed by her quick and sorrowful fall into a state of complete psychopathic madness, through which she lost her aides, allies, and only friends, and was haunted by memories of her mother? How haunting her jarring change in appearance and demeanor was, how horrifying she was when at her very lowest point?
Oh yeah, not to mention the literal slave ship, the towns oppressed by Fire Benders, Zuko's rejection whenever he tried to show kindness, all the sacrifices made for the good of the cause(i.e. Yue's moon transformation), the face-stealing demon, or the Aapa abusing carnival

Exactly. They never cried in every single situation they found themselves hopefully against.
Like, Azula only cried at the end because she had finally snapped, and Toph was 12, so any crying tears she had was more of a child thing in general, which makes sense.
I mean, they had fleshed out and they had hardships they had to go through. Katara never cried because Pakku refused to teach her. No, she actually showed him that she wouldn’t back down, and eventually became his student and then a water bending master.
I mean, these girls WORKED for their powers, and Korra just flew right on by.

      @derekclinton7482 8 ปีที่แล้ว +392

I agree. Another thing that confused me about this ship was that Korra and Asami really seemed to be polar opposites of one another. Asami was more of an calm, elegant, introverted character who would rather be at home running her company and trying to invent new things. Korra is shown to be a hotheaded and crude individual who rather go on an adventure and seems the type to die young. Sexuality aside, there really seems to be no reason why they would end up together.

Sokka is the ultimate badass character. He tamed wild beasts, learned new cultures, found information, participated in poetry readings, organized, led, and fought in battles and skirmishes, learned swordsmanship from a master and martial arts from a warrior culture, and stood toe-to-toe in conflicts fully governed by benders - all as a nonbender. His character is incredible.
    Bolin is nothing.

    • @glanni
      @glanni 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

I grew up watching Avatar, and while I always loved Sokka as a character and a member of the team, I recently started loving and appreciating him much more when I rewatched.
Sokka is really amazing! He's not only a physical fighter, but a cunning warrior. In media and especially video games, warriors are often portrayed as simple-minded boors who will punch the mob you just turned into a sheep, even though damage will interrupt the spell. But Sokka is smart, creative and quick, and he knows how to use what he's given to his advantage despite not having bending.
I also love that the show often makes a point in showing the characters' traits as good AND bad, depending on the situation, and the solution for that is to be with other people who balance that out. And Sokka is not only no exception, but the show loves to play with that balance about his character too.

A couple years late but better now than never. The thing about Sokka too is that he starts out as a sexist asshole that the show doesn’t try and paint as good. Sure, he’s obviously a good person but his prejudices are never seen by the show as good. He’s also headstrong and conflicted after being left behind in his mind “with the women and children” despite that being the very reason he was left behind. He doubts himself, he stumbles and falls, and gradually he becomes a better man from it. He picks himself up, dusts himself off, and the show isn’t afraid to make it known, he was integral to ending a CENTURY LONG WAR FOUGHT BY METAHUMANS. Bolín or Korra or Asami or Mako didn’t have to do that stuff, they just had to be better than they were when they started the show. Bolín actually is probably best example of character development they could’ve had if they didn’t make him the butt of the joke… and also just fucking abuse him for laughs

That’s a great way to put it!
One Piece is a great example of showing how a character can find strength through their relationships with others. As strong as each of the members of the crew are on their own, their individual strengths really shine when their around others. For instance, Luffy is pure determination and will power, something that is MAJOR in the OP world- but his kindness and likeness doesn’t come from him just being strong. He looks for strength in his crew- and their safety and happiness even rivals his own ambitions. They need him as a captain and he needs them to do everything he can’t do on his own. Zoro has always been a force to be reckoned with, had intense self-discipline, and was all-around a total badass. But without the crew, he would have never demonstrated his own leadership skills, challenged himself in more ways than physically, or even gotten as far as he did from his own stupidity. While Sanji can fight and cook and usually ends up gathering important information, he’s admired by the crew for his kindness/dedication to those he cares about- but without them, Sanji would have sacrificed his own dreams, future, and potential for that exact reason. Nami is responsible and self serving, but needs support from others in times of crisis just as much as they need her for direction and chiding and to keep them in place. Usopp is a storyteller and a coward, but he pushes himself to be braver and stronger to earn the relationships he’s gained. Chopper dreams of curing the world of sickness and making it a better place, but he needs proper guidance to support and encourage him that it’s worth it, despite everything he’s been through. Robin has learned to run and kill and read ancient texts, but it’s with others that she’s able to be happy while doing it, and find a purpose in her own actions. It goes on and on like that honestly. Everyone gets their best qualities from each other.
And I think that’s the problem with overblowing the whole “independent woman” thing.
Nowadays, it’s seen as a stereotype for women to rely on others. We’re being told that fighting with a one-person army is MORE admirable and ‘cool’ than fighting with the help of others or even just relying on them for basic help. Don’t get me wrong, finding strength in yourself IS cool and IS admirable. You can’t disagree with that. But it just isn’t SUPERIOR.
Like, aren’t basic human connections a pivotal thing in everyone’s life?
Like, which would you rather prefer?
      A) A character who’s developed or is looking for individual strength, but is also respectful and appreciative of the help they can get from others and the bonds that they build. They’ve learned to find meaning/lessons in the words and actions of others, and use it to better themselves.
      Or
      B) A character who believes that have individual strength, pushes away and disrespects others, and refuses to learn anything from the backlash because of their own pride. They attack the ones who try to help them, don’t create any equal/meaningful bonds, and don’t learn anything from others because of their desperate need prove them wrong.
That whole statement of needing others as much as they need you is just the truest thing.

For me, what REALLY pissed me off about the Legend of Korra was that they degraded bending to basic punches and kicks, and a spin once in a while. In ATLA, EVERY movement meant to bend that character’s respective element was very specific, and seeing that motion you could assume what it was meant to do, and a lot of those motions were inspired by real-life martial arts.
Plus, every single bender also had their own style of bending different than someone else’s. In ATLA, bending is established as an art and very personal to the individual.
In LOK, the writers shit on all of this. It pissed me off, as someone who’s favorite aspect of the series is the sheer amount of thought that went into the world building, character development, and bending. It’s one of the sole reasons I don’t like this show.

What a stab in the back this show is
it felt like they threw everything beautiful about this series away and lit it on fire

    • @kayleejones8677
      @kayleejones8677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +154

Right? I’m so glad people agree with me on this.
In ATLA, we are literally shown this in THE FIRST EPISODES. Back when Katara couldn’t waterbend, and Aang was captured by Zuko and then rescued by Katara and Sokka, she accidentally freezes Sokka’s feet to the ship because she throws her arms the wrong way in an attempt to ward off their attackers. In response, she turns around, and does the same motion, freezing the fire nation soldiers instead of her brother, this time.
That was the most obvious instance, which there are several more of in ATLA, but in LOK, this is practically nonexistent. In the first seconds of LOK, we see a practical baby bend three out of the four elements right out of the gate, showing practical mastery in the three. While Aang (regarded as a prodigy in bending) took YEARS to master even one element, and was forced to rush the others.
In my opinion, even if fans of the series love to say that LOK only looks worse because it follows such a masterpiece, the creators just overall shit on such a wonderful series. They turned the ATLA worldbuilding and universe into some sort of perverted steampunk Americanized technological world, ruined the religion and spirituality present in the series, ruined the lore on the Avatar and its cycle, all in favor of a romantic romcom-ish show that happens to have people who bend elements, and favors overpowered characters that even with the most powerful ability in that world (the Avatar State), still manages to lose fights for the sole reason that shes a girl and needs a big, strong man to finish fights for her.
And don’t even get me started on the disrespect against Tenzin and airbending in general

Another thing that pissed me off is that they completely erased the long-term effects of the war, and acted like the war never happened. The biggest offender of this is how the Spirit world just DECIDED to restore the balance in the elements, and give a ton of random nonbenders airbending, which overall is a horrible plot device, is really just a way to insert the antagonist into that season, and has a TON of plot holes. For example, why then? Why not after the genocide, while Aang was still in the ice? It could have saved him so much grief, even knowing that at least he wasn’t the ONLY airbender left, but instead it happens centuries in the future? WHY?
This decision is a lame attempt on the writers’ part, and maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if they expanded on the culture and very prevalent spirituality that is described over and over again in ATLA (in fact, it’s a huge part of Aang’s character and his development), but instead they just shit all over it.
I honestly shouldn’t expect much from a show that shows the AVATAR destroying one of the only ancient artifacts left from the genocide, one of the only things Tenzin has to train his children and continue the culture of the Air Nomads, just because SHE was inconvenienced because she skill wasn’t delivered to her on a silver platter. Then the writers decide that she doesn’t have to face the consequences of her actions, and continues to learn airbending, which is later also given to her on a silver platter.
I am DONE with Korra’s arrogance and sheer ignorance on practically everything an Avatar needs to have, without exception, and it weren’t for the plot of the show, it would be pretty easy to turn her into an evil Avatar. Honestly, an evil Avatar would’ve fit her character a lot more, and would have made for a good redemption story where she learns to let go of her privilege, arrogance, etc in favor of being the Avatar she is supposed and needed to be.

Hey, now, you can't forget that Korra trashed and broke his desk in his place of work and that if a male character even dared did half of what she had just done the whole fandom would be ablaze with fury.
But it's okay because she strong independent wahman, abusing men is okay because they're men! Especially if a woman is doing it, then it's empowering...?...!
I hate how my gender is always presented in female leads 🤦 God forbid we get a female lead who's like Katara or Suki or someone...
Oh, oh, and then we get a little joke about tophs daughter that she destroyed the airbenders island or something when tenzin broke up with her. Don't you just love a*b*u*1ve relationships that are made completely okay or are treated like a joke cos women are doing it? Cos I sure don't. Ugh, it's sickening. 🤢

Aang falls in love with Katara, Katara falls in love with Aang. They never let that get in the way of their goals, but rather help each other reach them. They respected each other and grew together.
Korra literally dated the whole main cast, with the exception of Air Daddy because she knew better than to awake the anger of a middle aged woman who fought nail and teeth to lock that 1 in a billion airbending dick.

There’s nothing wrong with Korra being a bad person at the beginning of the show. Aang was an irresponsible goof who needed to take things seriously. He learned to take responsibility and have confidence in his abilities. Starting with an impulsive, yet talented hothead is a good place to start for a hero’s journey. They just don’t have her learn the right lessons or grow in a satisfying way.

After that did he learned Firebending, but from a master who understood how it was to like to mess up and want to take responsibility for his actions and change which is Zuko who betrayed his uncle who treated him like a son (hurting someone you love narrative)

I felt the exact same way. When I watched the series with my wife, even she was thrown off by the whole "they were lesbians at the end"
She told me that everything they did were things that women typically do. They hug. They talk. They laugh. They blush when complimented. They were good friends at best.
When I watched it and saw the hand holding, I just thought it was a touching moment where the two despite all their troubles were able to be friends and go onto many adventures together.
It wasn't until I was discussing the show with a friend when they said "Nah, man. They were lesbians." and I had to take a moment to think about it and ask "What?" and they went on to tell me how all of Tumblr was saying they were gay through the entire show's run time.

Not having Aaron Ehasz and the original staff was primarily why LOK had so many problems, but a symptom of this that is another huge issue is that they TRY to be more adult and edgy. ATLA didn't try, they just told a good story. Any story that TRIES to be edgy or mature ends up forcing it and causing problem after problem if it doesn't completely destroy the story.

    About Korrasami.
I'm not salty that they're canon. But it still feels somewhat forced. Like, there is absolutely NO indication of them swinging both sides. I mean, yeah, they actually were nice to each other after they stopped bitching about Mako. And if that is enough to justify them getting together at the end, then this is not a "win" for gay relationships. That's like saying, all girls who are nice to other girls are potentially gay for them. Like ?????
It doesn't work like that for me or any of my gay/bi friends.

It feels forced cause it makes absolutly no sense and dosnt interact with the world. How many gay couples are introduced at that point? In both series. The answer shows, that in this world, just a generation away from ancient asia (china), homosexuality or bisexuality is either "not a thing" or "not accept" and handled like in real history.
So, when one of the main characters would get romantic feelings towards that direction - wouldnt you expect SOME development? Some time spend on that? Inner thoughts, doubts? A very vulnerable approach or outing?
When they both come out at the very same time at that very exposed spot - one of them the Avatar who already lived thousands of times in both genders and seems not to had that desire until now - wouldnt you expect the environment to react? Especially in a society so riddled and reformed?
But no, there is no sign of this incoming (even if those guys claim we are just to idiotic to see the hints) if you dont take any sign of friendship and care as sexual attraction (which is so pre-adult that it may belong into a children series...). There is no stand of society, no sexual revolution in it. It is forced cause it is what it is - one scene throwing not only a lifechanger for two "characters" in but also flip the table of society and the builded world around them without any reaction or sign before it happens.
Honestly i think they wanted to show the deep friendship and thankfullness, perhaps platonic love for the care Korra got by Asami - just to see extatic and hysteric reactions by a lot of "progressiv livestreamers" and LGBTQ adorers and reacted in the most greedy way. And like in Star Wars or MTG or any other "old school" entertainment franchise they reacted as if they are gods and we are unworthy to walk with those who pray to them.
Only one time i would love to see someone stepping down the SJW shrine and say: sry people, yeah we ruined it because we loaded it with our ideology and interests. I can see why this is a kick in your ass as the fans who had kept it alive until this point. We are sry. This is kicked out the canon.

    • @Arkalidor
      @Arkalidor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Here's my personal take away from the Korra-Asami thing: Yes, throughout the entire show, there isn't a single hint of romance, sexual attraction, whatever. Yet, at the end, they end up together. There HAS been some build up though. The correspondance between them, the bonds they developped while Korra was handicapped. Also, their shared romantic failures with Mako.
The way I understand it goes something like this: The whole story with Mako was bullshit, unnecessary drama for which all three of them were guilty. They were so caught up in superficial bullshit, they weren't in touch with their actual personal feelings. This was a learning experience. Just because someone gets your pants tingly isn't justification enough to devote your life to that person, and certainly not to get angry when a third person is also getting pants-tingles about them. Once this entire affair was over with, they had spent enough time with each other to not need the kind of mask we put up when meeting strangers. They knew each other fairly well, and despite their history, actually still enjoyed each other's company. And so, they kept exchanging, and bonding. And when the time came for Korra to go spend some time in the spirit world, it wasn't so much a question of romance, couples, sex, etc. as we usually see it. It was simply two humans who enjoyed each other's company, one who wanted company to wander through an unknown magical world, and one that like the first one enough to follow them. As for the question "will there be tingly pants?", it can be countered by the question "Is there any actual reason not to?".
So yeah, it was surprising, but I feel it wasn't a total asspull, only about 50% of one. And it was definitely a statement on the subject of "the norms and conventions we all know about love and romance are utter bullshit", which is a narrative that some people will relate to and find perfectly justified, and some others won't and they will think it's bullshit.

    • @Arkalidor

[Hi, I’m sorry for this rant. Didn’t’ intended to write so much at the start but it happened. Not really trying to press you on giving me an absolute answer or even one at all. Just tired of the term and its vague bullshit. So I just want to emphasis that it’s nothing personal and I hope I don’t come off as attacking you. Sorry for any incoherence]
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So in this world of ours there exists now The “White’s” and The “Coloured”? How does this make sense?
Why is every other ethnicity except those deemed “white” of which I don’t even know where it exactly ends count into that? What are the criteria needed to be a “PoC”?
Is this line drawn on being someone of the "people of colour" category literally just the colour of your skin or is it “looking European”? Can’t be skin colour since a lot of Asians are more “white” skinned than many of Europeans, and even a substantial amount of Northern Europeans, so that can’t be it right? But it can’t be “looking European” either if one goes by what I perceive to be your perspective here on that. And even if that isn't how you see it then what is
I know the term, I know the etymology and history of it, and if Black people in the North Americas want to designate themselves as such then who the fuck cares, I mean the majority of blacks in the North Americas are of mixed heritage. So it fits in with the way that for example South Africa and certain other African countries use it, where "People of colour" are those of mixed heritage of the Boers and the Bantu (White and the Black), so “Pure Africans” in south Africa aren’t “People of Colour” there.
Which is why blacks in the North Americas would be considered more European or at least not African in a substantial amount of countries in Africa. Both because the sense of blackness that is so strong in the US for example isn’t ubiquitous in Africa at all and that they don’t share the heritage of that of the Americas blacks. As well as them having a lot more European phenotypical traits than contemporary Africans in general, and culture s is one hell of difference, even in the same country it can be a huge divide among different groups. At least they would definitely not be accepted as Africans by a lot of Africans from what I know.
So based on whether one goes with whites are those of European decent, or south Europeans are not "white" either as some argue, then we have between 400-800 Million set against 7.3-6.8 Billion in this unnecessary categorisation. Why is this even a somewhat useful designation to have in common parlance?
We have certain broad racial designations, both because of linguistic heritage and history, but most of all because it does help in certain areas. For example, great example is in medicine, because there is quite a lot medical conditions that are either almost only prevalent, or to a much higher degree present in one “race” then others. But we also have it because we aren’t dumb and can observe and are by nature very tribal. But what does “People of Colour” bring in to the discourse at all if it encompasses everyone except “White people”? As in 6 to 12 percent of the world’s population?
To me it seems like an inculcated term to view the world in power struggle of classes, or at least in the way it’s come to be in western countries. It’s the white against the coloured because they are the minority and eternal victims. The perspective of the myopic white guilt flail-loving ignorance of the NPC masses that leads to the same kind of idea of talking about Asians as minorities even when the context is about for example Chinese (Han) people in China.
The aggregation that comes with a plethora of categories that specifically aren’t based on a dichotomy of word usage makes it murkier for our monkey brains and forces more introspection, which is why having this "White" and the rest who are "Coloured" seems particularly pernicious compared to at least having the 5 broad designations, of which under those broad designations there a whole plethora of ethnicities.
I can’t see who this term helps out except those trying to build and climb the hierarchy in the oppression Olympics in any way when it literally it's just stating none-white except with the added bonus of arbitrarily enforcing in-group alignment of everyone else. And especially in today’s climate of SocJus with academia for the last decades pumping out a perspective history as the white devil having subjugated the world and the “noble savages”, of which all belong into the category of “People of colour”.

Yes. It's an incoherent notion for a cartoon. Actually, it's incoherent in general because skin colour or even race is negligible in the face of culture, wealth, language, and so on. There's no 'representation' or other nonsense. What is unrepresented is social/political sensibilities and culture of non-Americans. Every character fits into the scheme of Americanisms.

How I wanted Season 1 to end:
Aang DOES show up (let's face it we wanted to see him anyway), sits with Korra, and lets her express herself. He doesn't restore her bending. At all. Instead, he lets her spill her emotions because at that moment she needed someone to confide in. And who better to confide in than the previous Avatar? After listening, Aang shows his sympathy, but encourages her that there is always another way.
I feel that not only will Korra grow from her old bratty self, but this will also be in character for Aang. (Remember how desperatedly he wanted to end the war without killing Ozai?)
Thus, Aang reassures her that everything will be OK. (Also Mako doesn't show up)
Korra looks up, slightly hopefully, at the dawning sky.
    THE END
    Sorry for any grammar mistakes.

I remember vividly the moment that turned me completely off from the show in the first season (I dropped it shortly after) was the scene in which Bolin discovers Korra and Mako kissing.
Now we don't know if Bolin has ever had a crush on someone like he had Korra before, but it hits the heart harder if this really was his first love. He's poor as hell, but he goes out and buys the girl he likes flowers because he wants to make her happy and show his feelings.
Then he sees said girl kissing his older brother, whom he adores. In one foul swoop he is betrayed by two people he loves through no fault of his own.
And how does the show handle this? By having Bolin crumple up and run away crying in the most obvious and insulting excuse for comedy I'd seen in a while (at the time). He runs away and when Mako finds him he is in a similar state of drunken comedic crying. Mako even has the gall to pick his crying brother up and sling him over his shoulder like a sack of soggy potatoes in a 'Jesus get a grip bro' way.
It was at that moment that I realised Bryke and the writers had zero respect for practically the only character in the show that I liked. Any depth of feeling was just played for laughs. People he cared about crapped all over him and he had to like it and lump it.
Why? Primarily I think because Bolin was written as comic relief/audience stand-in first and a character second. It was honestly painful to watch.

    • @f67739

this makes plenty of sense watching the series now. couldn't they write her to face different struggles from aang? keep some good character traits, but replace the naivety of aang with cynicism that gets in her way as the avatar
she's got a head start in other styles of bending, but is weak with spiritual stuff whereas aang could enter the spirit world whenever. but not the actual korra struggles of: "i cant connect to the spirit world, except when its convenient for plot" and "i only struggle with airbending."
for one, she could just be mediocre at all styles of bending, aka she can waterbend, but without any finesse and capability to freeze, etc. or she can tap into the spirit world, but suffers some kind of bending deterioration side effect that she'd have to strengthen by training in both bending and spirit stuff.
nah, handing everything onto a silver platter for korra is more interesting

Praised, yes - made a video with the purpose of praise? Nope. All he does is make negative "review" videos; they get views. People like to sit and listen to other people bitch and nitpick and tear apart movies - that's why videos like these are a dime a dozen on youtube.
Conversely, there a plethora of reviews on youtube that DO praise _The Legend of Korra_ but they don't get anywhere near as many views, comments, or likes - regardless of how in-depth the critique goes or whether it debunks common complaints and criticisms. People just WANT to hate things.
Moreover, ATLA is far from perfect; it is, in the end, still just a cartoon with magic and kung fu. The fact that we can get into deeper messages and wax eloquent about its virtues is a testament to what a cartoon can achieve, but it's not like the same can't be done for LOK and it's not like ATLA isn't still objectively a children's program.
These nitpick reviewers do two things:
1.) Nitpick: give zero credit where credit is due, find fault with EVERYTHING, leave out resolutions to issues to present a false narrative, rudely dismiss and mock.
      and
2.) Praise an alternative: if it's STAR WARS, they praise the OG trilogy to mythical, flawless levels and then contrast the focus and claim, "this one doesn't do that,".
      It's intellectually dishonest.

Making the main character gay is the best move a producer could pull. Then they don't have to do any work to make their show good. They can just rely on the fanbase to call everyone who criticizes the show homophobic. The more you pander to the SJW crowd, the bigger the voice you have defending your work for absolutely nothing other than having a person of color who is also a gay woman.

Honestly, I liked that Korra was hot headed at first. She was everything opposite of Aang. She wasn't peaceful of spiritual. With that, I think it was wrong for them to leave her character at that. It would have been better if Aang was guiding and teaching Korra about spirituality much like Roku did the same for him. Pair that with Amon acutally energy bending and non-bender's being actually opressed they could have taken Korra on a journey where she has to learn and grow as an Avatar and a person. Hell, they could have even taken her bending away for a few episodes so she sees the injustice forced on non benders, much like zuko saw the injustice forced on other nation.

      @publiusventidiusbassus1232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

I don't buy the whole "make non-benders oppressed" storyline. It's unnecessary. Just making her leave life as a vulnerable, regular person is enough to push her into maturity, self-reflection and developing adaptability. Non-benders were already stablished in the Avatar lore as simply filling socio-cultural niches than the benders didn't. Look at Sokka's entire character arc, he was disadvantaged against benders but he wasn't some second class citizen, he simply developed different skills to contend.

It's just stupid hypocrisy from edgy fans who take what people on youtube say seriously. LOK was more mature than ATLA, but both are still just cartoons; they're made for kids, so they have some childish humor - the difference is that LOK was made for the kids who had already watched ATLA and/or slightly older kids/teens. I am about a country with a corrupt government that is ruled by a de-facto ruler and a group that support him called the Dai Li, who basically protect Ba Sing Se however possible, even going as far as hiding the war, and brainwashing anyone who opposes them. Children are killed on screen. And horrible things happen. My characters are great, developed real beings with various character arcs.
*MEANWHILE IN LOK* I try to create villians who are very deep and support deeper themes but I rush it so badly that the story doesn’t make sense, and that their motives are undermined. Korra is a mary sue and doesn’t have to do anything and the rest of the characters are as dimensional as wood. The fights are one sided. Like trained warriors can’t fight the Red Lotus, but Kai (a noob airbender) can, Bumi (even worse in airbending) can. Meanwhile the Dai Li get knocked out by their own rock gloves...

We know from interviews Sokka and Suki moved to Republic city, and since they were only 3 years older then aang, they would be in their 70s by the time the show started. Sokka was also known to be in the city council, so either he retired and lived a quiet and peaceful life in the suburbs (Unlikely) or he was killed after his 30s. As Sokka was his usual self during the court case scene, Suki also probably made it as well. Now, what could have killed them in Republic City? Probably the rampant gang problem. Seeing as the city council wouldn't do anything, Sokka and Suki probably lived a happy life before going after the gangs and getting killed doing so. That's just a theory though.

Wait, the accusation of Mako being a cheater and a terrible boyfriend is widely undeserved. Hell, I'm sure he is so hated because he's the only character who, at the beginning of the show at least, calls Korra on her bullshit.
    Let's recap, shall we:
Korra kissed Mako while knowing he was in another relationship. He pushed her away.
He later started developing feelings for her and when he realized her it, he broke up with Asami. No cheating there. Best course of action one can take really. Then, when he (rightfully) doubted Korra for trusting Unalaq and Varrick, she went to his office and...just fucking destroyed it (domestic violence you all)! She breaks up with him in the process.
He then told Asami and she kissed him. No cheating there. Clearly the relationship is over.
The bulging relationship with Asami is ended quickly when Korra comes back, jumps on him and kisses him. Ending his relationship with Asami
So no, Mako never cheated. (I might be wrong I only watched the show once). He just was unlucky enough to have Korra fall for him and repeatedly break his relationships up XD
He never even initiated any of the kisses I mentionned.
So, to summarise: Korra broke Mako and Asami up to supposedly go out with him, beat him up, treated him like shit and finally broke up with him. Then she ended up going out with his now single girlfriend. Isn't there something wrong there? Sounds like Korra is either abusive or completely manipulative...

Slight correction (to a 9 month old comment, I know), but when Korra trashed his workspace in season 2, _Mako_ broke up with her--not the other way around. I almost cheered when he did that.
Unfortunately he later inexplicably became spineless and didn't tell conveniently amnesiac Korra that they'd broken up already. Was it out of fear of abusive retaliation, or out of bad writing? I believe the phrase "conveniently amnesiac Korra" answers _that_ question.

@@hanburgundy4317 Except Aang's attachment to Katara prevented him from entering the Avatar state because she was almost literally everything for him, he was more preoccupied with saving her than anything.
Aang doesn't get the avatar state for free after being poked by a rock, he had already done what he needed to achieve the avatar state in season 2, but Azula blocked his chakra at the end of season 2. The shock with the rock allowed him back to go in the avatar state. It is also important to notice that the Avatar State in the fight with Ozai isn't a controled avatar state, so it was something that Aang was supposed to be capable of since episode 1 anyways.
Was the rock thing convenient? Yes. Was it incoherent with the world's lore? No.

But Aang _didn't_ do everything he needed; he didn't let go of his worldly attachments - he never let go of Katara. And IDK, I disagree; from how it was showcased in the finale, Aang could enter and leave the Avatar State at will once he got poked by the rock - it wasn't just his former lives taking over anymore, but _Aang_ controlling the AS for the first time.
IDK, maybe I read too much into it and he never mastered the ability lol

@@hanburgundy4317 I don't know where you got this idea from: in ATLA we see that avatar Roku had a wife and children and yet he was able to master the avatar state and fullfill his duties. What the guru stated, which was later reinforced by Avatar Yangchen in the finale, so It's not just an interpretation (and Is still again reinforced in later comics) is that Aang shouldn't let his attachments or needs go over his duties: which Is exactly what he does next when he "Empire strikes back" to save Katara, which ended with him dead and the avatar cycle broken (only saved thanks to Katara's caring and her Spirit water). I don't really see what your point Is here, since all of this Is explicitly in the series.

Because of E;R's praise of Aaron Ehasz and explaining how he was a vital element to ATLA's success and his absence for Korra being a main shift in quality from great to bad, I looked up his work, saw he was the main guy for Dragon Prince; a show I initially dismissed upon seeing trailers. Gave it a watch, and it legitimately felt more like ATLA than the canonical sequel. The fantastic imagination, the creativity, the good character interactions, the great characters, you even have early GOT elements with courtly intrigue and assassinations for season 2 and early season 3. They even have Koh's VA as a primary protagonist and his voice is like potato chips, I cant get enough of it.
TL;DR - E;R was right, Aaron Ehasz is the reason ATLA was good and his absence in Korra shows.

Ajohnymous does Koes VA voice somebody besides Aravos? Also It’s great how Sokkas VA plays Callum who is kinda Sokka’s opposite in that he loves magic and finds wonder in it compared to Sokka who’s a skeptic and more of a science person. I also like Callum and Raylas relationship, even though it develops earlier on it feels more natural and their reactions when telling people they’re an item is goofy in a cute coupley kind of way.

@@thetraveler7368 So Erik Dellums, the VA for Koh and Aravos, ALSO voices Nazir from Skyrim- the redguard in the Dark Brotherhood! I didn't even realize it until I read it, then thought about Nazir doing a deep, calm and scary voice.
As for Callum, he is definitely in many ways the opposite of Sokka, yet also very similar. Callum as you said loves magic and finds in interesting, more optimistic and is less physically capable while Sokka was a warrior of the water tribe and eventual master swordsman, but both are leaders, planners, very creative in problem solving. I think they would be best friends who argued a bit about magic and its merits, what it means to be a man, and laugh about how they both like women who are strong, capable warriors while both them and their love interests are pretty goofy but their partners are generally more serious and combat focused.
I also love Callum and Rayla's relationship. They both fit each other in many ways and are complimentary to each other, supportive of the other when they feel like they aren't being a good assassin or having no elemental link to perform magic but encourage them to be themselves, being silly and fun in their calm moments but able to solve problems that the other cant during a crises. They're as cute as they are healthy and functional. Korra is an inherently awful person and even with Asami in the comics, shes awful towards her parents when they supported her decision to be with Asami but said to be careful as others might be bigots. Korra was also abusive to Mako and Bolin, using them more often than being a good partner. Ehasz has a good understanding on relationships and what makes them work, while Brike have a 70/30 chance on having a relationship start realistically or pulled right from the ether like Asami and then make it unpleasant afterwards.

Ajohnymous everything you said is Spot On! I have so many issues with LoK as a series let alone Korra as a character. I’m looking forward to the next season of DP so, so much. We are only up to S3 and I’m looking forward to seeing how DP ends. My only critique is the animation style they went with but that’s more of a personal preference and I ignore it because DP is just that Good.

Ngl The Dragon Prince comes pretty close to A:TLA (probably the closest in a post-Avatar tv landscape). However I do have some issues with the show. The world is a bit too standard fantasy-ish and no where as interesting as A:TLA, There are some really dumb scenes (the scene where Virren forces the soldiers who refused to fight against the elves to wear a “badge of shame.” is such blatant parallelism towards the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany it’s actually hilarious) and the show would look way better in 2D. However, it’s more than made up for through its interesting story and great characters. You can tell that Ehasz and his team put a lot of love and care in the Dragon Prince. I can’t wait for the next few seasons and hope they don’t drop the ball like Bryke did with the first two seasons of Korra.
TL;DR The Dragon Prince is really good but my minor issues with the show sort of bog it down from being a masterpiece for me personally.
