In fairness to our friend Drachinifel, he occasionally throws out a really dry one-liner from time to time, very British humor but if you're into that he's pretty good.
I feel like it would be cool to talk about a comparison between olympic and mauretania, or compare Olympic to britannic, to show how the first and last of the Olympic pic class differed.
Alright alright I'm back and I'm here to stay...until my next unintentional hiatus. I went to the Grand Canyon and Vegas and had some sailing trips but I'm back!
I love the fact that oceanic 2 was revolutionary at that time And i dont know that brunel's great eastern was longer that it cannot docked at its port.
Having worked as a cabinetry maker for a number of years from about 1999 to 2006, I can say that what they put into these ships back in the day was nothing less than extraordinary. Workmanship was obviously important back in those days. Artificial workmanship seems to suffice now. Unless you really know what you're looking at. At this point I tend to think it was wasted effort as most of these ship would be sunk during wars as scrapped without little regard to the efforts that went into their fitting out.
It is worth mentioning that the Oceanic pretty much was an enlarged version of the Teutonic and Majestic, i.e. more evolutionary than revolutionary in her design. Teutonic and Majestic's general arrangements were more or less the same as Oceanic's. This becomes extra apparent if you look at the Majestic after her 1902-03 refit. Although not a record breaker, the Oceanic was still an express liner, like her little sisters capable of a good 20 knots. The "slow and luxurious" strategy that is so often attributed to the White Star Line was actually mostly manifested with the "Big Four". (The Olympic class ships were also "express liners" with their 21-22 knot service speeds.) Another point of interest is the Oceanic's unusually tall funnels. This was likely due to new philosophies in steam engine technology emerging in the early 1890s, where natural draught had become more important than before, which was achieved by installing these really tall funnels. Compare for example with Cunard's Lucania and Campania of 1893 which had similar giant smokestacks. Due to her speed, Oceanic was also one of the four liners selected to inaugurate White Star's Southampton via Cherbourg express service in 1907, a very important event in history of Atlantic ocean travel. After the introduction of the Olympic in 1911, she was her continuous running mate until the war started.
Just a correction, the ship was under a "shared" command at the time she ran aground. There was a "Naval Captain" and a "Merchant Marine Captain". The reason was that no naval Captain had experience sailing such a large non-naval vessel. The navigation "error" was compounded by three conditions: differences of opinion over the correct position as stated, due to unformilarity with the area, a complicated by very strong tidal currents and poor visibility.
Another thing we’ve learned: Lightoller loved this ship. Dude probably would have pulled a Captain Rostron with the Maurentania if she had of been scrapped instead of ran aground.
Welcome back! So this must've been where Olympic (and I guess also Titanic) gained their tendencies to have run-ins or near run-ins with other vessels and geography and such. Speaking of Titanic and near run-ins with other vessels, are we just gonna ignore the fact that Oceanic was right next to the City of New York when Titanic almost sucked that one into her aft? Sheesh. 🤣 Imperator next?? 👀
I agree with lightollers take on gaudiness, white starling was very conservative with its interior design. Beautiful, well ordered, and ornate but not gaudy and suffocating. I think this is really shown with the comparison between the Oceanic's and Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse's dinning saloon .
Hey man, fantastic video and an amazing way to return after a few months. It was a good watch, and I’ve rewatched it a few times as well. I think it would be a good video to compare the first liner of a company to the last liner, or comparing rival liners.
some ships you could do- HMS Hood/German DKM Bismarck US naval taffy 3 and their fight against the Japanese off Samar USS indianapolis sinking and the shark wars USS Harder, Barb, Tang submarines U-99 German Uboat USS Enterprise ww2 aircraft carrier USS Texas battleship HMS Warspite-battleship
Great video! Glad you're back! Can or will you do a video on Lusitania's sister ships? Also you better upload more often. I didn't subscribe for one video every 300 years
If you need ship video ideas I have one you can make about You could make a story of the Morro castle Archelie luaro The wilhiem Gusloff Or the leviathan Hope this gives you ideas
History and comedy can go together (monty python being one of the best examples) but this isn't one of the cases... it just feels like some teacher trying to relate to their students. 😅
It may just be me, but in every photograph of her, doesn't Oceanic look like she has a consistant list that looks similar to the infamous one that Imperator had?
The only difference between a water driven turbine and a propeller is where the power is applied and where the work is done. Flow water over a prop and it will turn.
since this is called nautical study- why not branch into other ships, battleships, battlecruisers, sailing ships, submarines, etc. I can think of a laundry list of ships you couldmake videos about

What a pity that such a beautiful ship should receive such an infantile superficial and facetious treatment from this tiresome commentator.. Fortunately there are others covering this subject for grown-up people.. and there is a good book on the Oceanic for those who can read.
Nothing like a beautiful liner being covered by funni boat man to start my day :)
Indeed
same
Oh no not you again.
glad you're back. your funny commentary is unrivaled when it comes to the "boat people" on youtube

In the 70s, the engines as well as the propeller shafts were left. No idea what she looks like now though.
Look! He’s managed the Cape Horn and he has returned!
Nautical study is back, Cheers!
Quite the bonnie wee beastie... Ought to get the Atlas diecast mini-model of her...
The King of Obscure Ships and Ocean Liners is back, may he continue to preach his wise wisdom to all of us boat people!
Oceanic's funnels were similar in proportion to pringles cans
Nautical study : * after explaining how the oceanic 2 sank *
Me : Well time for the 3rd ship now

Aye great video I love the Oceanic it was the subject for one of my first videos
my favorite ship
It would be cool to see more videos on Warships. There are a great amount of warships with amazing stories that not many people know.
please, i second this

My favorite ocean liner baby!
Been a long time! Live your vids. Keep it up. Better not take another 2 months.
Oof...that "what have we learned" actually hurt a little.

Welcome Back! I love your video.
I'm pretty sure Oceanic 2 is Way popular than I think
video idea: the sinking of the soviet ship admiral nakhimov, the history behind the ship is truly fascinating.
I am also back after not watching this channel for IDK how months
I love your channel keep up the great stuff!
Do a video about the Costa Concordia and the "five star captain"
you're like ConeOfArc or PotentialHistory but for ships, please post more! your videos are great!
Maybe the CSS Georgia?
The ship so useless it was turned into a stationary gun battery?
Oceanic was almost as beautiful as the Titanic
Bungabunga, back into my naval studies I go!
The king returns
I think you should do the S.S Cap Arcona (1927)
Hey nautical study, could you do a video on the AHS Centaur. It was a hospital ship during the second World War that deserves to be remembered
Very nice.
Finally another video
some ships you could do-
HMS Hood/German DKM Bismarck
US naval taffy 3 and their fight against the Japanese off Samar
USS indianapolis sinking and the shark wars
USS Harder, Barb, Tang submarines
U-99 German Uboat
USS Enterprise ww2 aircraft carrier
USS Texas battleship
HMS Warspite-battleship
He's finally back! God I missed your videos. Could you do a video on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald or KMS Bismarck please?
Awesome
She literally looks like a mini titanic!
I have a ship suggestion. Do one on the Great Lakes storm of 1913. And the ss kamloops.
Great video! Glad you're back! Can or will you do a video on Lusitania's sister ships? Also you better upload more often. I didn't subscribe for one video every 300 years
Make a great eastern video if you need content ideas, because it’s the best ship ever
I love nautical study
I love your videos
And proceeds to show SS limparater at the end
10:04 well that hit too close to home
If you need ship video ideas I have one you can make about
You could make a story of the Morro castle Archelie luaro

how about looking into NYK Hikawa Maru, if you don't mind looking up Japanese ocean liners
Nautical study video on great eastern when
Yeeee here comes my video
Maybe you should do the RMS Aquitania
Can u do a video of the RMS Empress of Australia?
Electric Boogaloo! 😅😅
Why not make a video about the Laurentic II ( 1927 ) ?, the last of the coal fired liners with a powerplant similar as the Olympic class.
I also find it funny there is no pictures of any of the remains of the ship
He's alive, yay?
You broke your promise that you’ll mention me :(
Nah jk, you’re still an amazing channel.
I think you'll like the Q&A
@@NauticalStudy hmm
Yep defnitely, thanks!

could you do a video on the SS Baychimo
Can u do da rms Franconia
you should make a video on rms oceanic III.... too soon?
It may just be me, but in every photograph of her, doesn't Oceanic look like she has a consistant list that looks similar to the infamous one that Imperator had?
Did they put the engines in the Oceanic at 1:28? If not, why were they spinning?
The water was pushing them. Slide a pinwheel or a desk fan through water and the same thing will happen (i think).
The only difference between a water driven turbine and a propeller is where the power is applied and where the work is done. Flow water over a prop and it will turn.
YES MORE BOAT VIDEOS
Hms Lapland next?
B O A T

Did you really just ramble for over 10 minutes about Oceanic without making a joke about her Doug Dimmadome - ass funnels?
Do a reaction video about the overrated RMS Clickbait
