    Folks I've painted the California coast for decades and the absolute best area I found was south of San Francisco, just south of Half Moon Bay and north of Santa Cruz. Good areas around Pacific Grove and Monterey too, many old time California Impressionists painted there. The first area is very accessible, many areas are safe to park, and was mostly free (no fees) state lands when I last was there (2006). I'm in AZ now, few beaches here!!! but we are close (half day drive) to this area Jessica is painting. Main difference is the northern areas have beaches, and also headlands, tide pools, reefs, small seabird islands, etc. In other words more than just ocean and sand and a bit of veg as in this painting here. But still nice work! Any time you are painting at the ocean it's a joy and a privilege I believe. Thanks!!

    What a beautiful and tranquil scene to paint, Jessica! I loved the sea lions. Your Carlsbad plein air painting using the open box M was great to watch since we could see your palette as well as your lovely painting. A delight to watch you paint and see the waves around you.

    A very fine early Christmas present, thank you! And it is exciting to be able to look forward to seeing my favorite painter on TH-cam on my favorite TH-cam art show!
    I greatly appreciate being able to see how you paint and to hear your commentary. It really does go a considerable distance for those of us who don't have access to in-person classes. Every one of these I get to see is another step on the journey. Merry Christmas to you and yours and a very happy New Year!

    Another GREAT video: THANK YOU. I wish you happy holidays and let us know how your interview went in California (Put some colour in your life). Question: how do you decide when to paint starting with darkest vs starting from the farther lighter areas?

    • @JessicaHenry
      @JessicaHenry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Maria! It went wonderfully! In painting I try to establish the extremes first. Since this scene was about light, I started there. Sometimes I know a scene will change fast, so I start out with what will change first. In this case, the land was both. I knew the water would look the same for the next hour, but the light on the land could look very different in an hour. plus that atmosphere way back there could definitely look different quickly, so I started there. Then I established the extreme darks.

    Hi Jessica, beautiful painting!! Just wondering what your thoughts on umbrellas are for painting - usually don’t see you using one - wouldn’t it be easier to see your palette and canvas without sun on them?

    • @JessicaHenry
      @JessicaHenry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Natasha, I do like them, I generally can't use them for filming, though, because they cast too much shade on the canvas. When I am out by myself (no camera) I generally just find some light shade.

    When will the workshop be in San Diego? Any information on the cost and what we will be painting?

    • @JessicaHenry
      @JessicaHenry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Lorraine, We are going to be ironing out the details here in the next week. I expect it to fill fast, since it's already half full and we don't even have the date or cost figured out. But, to answer your question, It will be plein air. i'd like to take at least one day or more and go to the coast. We will be headquartered in Fallbrook. There is a golf course there with a gorgeous hotel. On that resort, tucked away is a studio called The Green Art House. It'll be headquartered there, and we'll venture out from that location. The exact painting locations have yet to be confirmed. But I will get back to you as soon as we know more.

    Did you consider including the surfer standing on the shore....maybe if there wasn’t a palm tree?

    • @JessicaHenry
      @JessicaHenry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I did consider that! I think if I make this into a larger painting, they'll be going in, because it reflects California so well and they also give it scale.

  • @ezfitchick

    Th insert is needed while you are painting - you zoomed in, but then we lose what you are looking at and don't see your palette any longer. When you back the camera up it is far more helpful while watching so we can see what your darks are that you are painting the land. And you are painting thicker, so please talk about painting thin to thick.
