I was shocked by this wonderful music, especially by 2, 3, 4 pats. And excellent performance. Ready listen it more and more. Thank you for such a good music.
This is grand, powerful, evocative, Wagnerian, ... ; awesome, late-Romantic, lyrical, and triumphant music from Dopper, who makes wind instruments shine from the outset !!! Thanks Bom Cabedal for posting this gem.
It is - but it also appears to draw inspiration from French and Italian comic opera, just like Wagner did up to and including his first great success, Rienzi. Cheesy marching band tunes or short melodic passages that would not have sounded off in one of Meyerbeer or Rossini's operas can be heard, but also almost literal quotations (in terms of texture, figuration but also use of wind instruments and how contrasting motifs are pitted vs. one another) from Der Fliegende Holländer.
I know this will sound lame, but life is so full of challenges I've taken to seeking out music that doesn't put up too much of a fight. This is absolutely perfect. It's pretty much just tunes! And lovely ones too.
Thanks so much for this Bom. I discovered Mr Dopper's symphonies a couple of years ago. I have recordings of Symphonies 2,3, 6 & 7. I would love all of his symphonies and I have emailed Naxos to suggest they have a look at his music with a view to championing him.
During the last few years Dopper's work has been rediscovered in the Dutch Groningen province (Stadskanaal lies in this Northern Dutch province) and in the meantime it received regular media coverage. It was only because of this I learned about this composer and got to appreciate his work.
I am certainly glad to have the opportunity of hearing Dopper's First Symphony. Four of his other symphonies are available on TH-cam and they are enormously attractive works, of which this, his first, is also, If you can give us his 4th and 5th symphonies, I would be most appreciative. Glad to have found you, Bom Cabedal!

Very interesting work! Never heard of th8s composer before
First time I hear Dopper. His name is familiar. It's one of the 'great composers' names that grace the walls of the Concertgebouw Hall. So he must have been thought highly of by his countrymen a hundred years ago.
These were part of a larger project with the Residentie Orchestra and Matthias Bamert; they also recorded the Hol symphonies and works by Voormoolen and Verhulst (the Verhulst symphony is very good indeed). The project appears to have ended, unfortunately.
Your mention of Dopper's 4th and 5th symphonies remaining in manuscript reminds me of the situation with the English composer, Charles Stanford. According to Groves, his 1st Symphony remains "unpublished", yet Vernon Handley resurrected it and there is now an integral set of all 7 Stanford symphonies (note 7 - like Dopper!). An "epic symphony of Mahlerian size and length" - now THAT I'd love to hear - one can only hope that Dopper fares as well as Stanford.
Also, 30:47 sounds more like the start of the 4th movement, 30:00 just sounds like the middle of the previous movement. And I have to say that final movement is absolutely epic
Good spot! But it's not 30:47. The fourth mvt begins at 26:54. I've changed the description, so thanks! A while ago, I was updating all my older videos with track times, and I might've goofed here and there.
Neither the 4th nor the 5th have been recorded and - to my knowledge - only exist in ms. The fourth is an epic symphony of Mahlerian size and length, based on Homer's Iliad.
For awhile Chandos was projecting the complete Dopper symphonies. However, something happened there and it appears to be dead in the water. Very unfortunate.
You can hear the post-Romantic phrasing and motifs that would later fuel cinematic productions of the modern era. It was all downhill from here, unfortunately.

Could be the best composer ever 🎉.

TH-cam has triggered with me a persistent searching for yet another enjoyable orchestral work. I found this one enjoyable.

He was also Mengelberg's second-in-command at the Concertgebouw and very beloved by the public because he conducted most of the subscription concerts.

Thank you Bom Cabedal. You are truly a gift to mankind.

Never heard anything about English composer Charles Stanford. But now l'l try find his symphonies in TH-cam. Thank you.
Beautiful, interesting.
Smooth, rich, flowing
Magnificent!

Absolute shame that no recordings exist of those. I’d love to hear them
Molto grazie...:)
A delightfully pictorial bit of phantasmagoria -- okay, a little silly, but with some very fun story-telling.
For awhile Chandos was projecting the complete Dopper symphonies. However, something happened there and it appears to be dead in the water. Very unfortunate.
Absolutely love 6:41 to 8:36
Prachtige muziek.

Pure beauty, just like Diana herself!
She seems to have improved with age judging by this beautiful musical tribute.
Maybe CPO can take up the cause. They've done some amazing work with composers even more obscure than Dopper.
Wauw!

Sometimes It looks like Dvorak!
