Well, obviously, TenTen is the best ninja at the Chunin Exams because she's mastered the ultra-secret "Ninjutsu of Blending into the Background." I mean, who needs flashy jutsu when you can disappear from the plot entirely? It's the ultimate ninja skill!
A bit of explaination: 1. When Kakashi said that he became a Chunin at an age twice younger than Naruot, he wasn't exaggerating, he really did. And by the age of Naruto (aka 12), he got the rank of Jonin (the highest rank of Ninja that could be earned through missions and exams). But how and why - you gotta wait and see. No spoilers here. 2. When Might Guy was telling that he and kakshi are rivals and have almost 50/50 win rate, he wasn't joking, exaggerating or telling lies. Yes, a guy (he-hee) who's style of fighting is just Martial Arts without any Jutsu is just as powerfull as the Ninja that copied over 1000 Jutsu and was at the top of Ninja promotion tree at the age of 12. Despite Guy's and Rock Lee's appearence and personalities are goofy, you definitely don't want to underestimate them. And yes, both of their designs and conepts are based on Bruce Lee.
I feel like it kinda loses that unique character in Shippuden. Well, a little before that. The final arc of Part 1 was completely devoid of 'believe it,' for example, and it was dropped from then on in favor of 'ya know,' which is more of a literal adaptation of a verbal tick, since that's what 'dattebayo' is
I always imagined it's implied that they have already gone on a bunch of missions, just lower rank ones. It was shown at the beginning of the land of waves arc, that Naruto was frustrated with always getting low rank missions, so they must have done at least several lower rank ones in addition to the land of waves mission. Great reaction though. I CANNOT WAIT for you to get to my favorite parts in Shippuden. YOU WILL FEEL PAIN!

I love how you’re picking up on one if the most overlooked parts of the show: Naruto doesn’t change. He changes everyone around him. He’s like Captain America or Marty McFly. It’s also extremely apparent within the fillers because Naruto changes a lot of hearts and minds in Filler also but especially in the main canon! I think there’s a section cut from the Ocean Cut in this part where kakashi agrees to let Iruka Sensei test the Rookies, so Iruka tries to trap/kidnap Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura in disguise as a test and they all surprise him with how much they’ve grown and he agrees with Kakashi that they’re ready for the Exams.
yeah I learned that character type from goku. 'flat character arc'. Yeah like cap etc. they change others, instead of changing themselves. Which is why it's a lot easier for many to like Vegeta more, cause it's a more easily identified character progression
A lot of the tactics they use to cheat are kind of obvious, but I have a couple ways to justify it. 1. An instance of cheating is only a 2 point deduction, so even if you get caught once or twice, you can still do fine. 2. My headcanon is that the sentinels will overlook cheating if they think it was clever enough. Obviously there aren't a lot of options for cheating when you have to sit in one spot and are constantly watched by a team of people, so I assume that if you are quick enough or creative enough, they'll give you a pass.

Rewatching this with you has been a joy there's something magical that happens when you watch something with someone who's never seen it. Like you get to see it for the first time again too. You are hilarious. It's also so interesting to see these old episodes with the long run knowledge it makes the show that much more intense and some of the things you say not even knowing how deep it goes is wild.

some time has passed between The Land of Waves mission and now, they have been doing things :) the first OVA takes place before this if you are interested :) the show is very self-aware everything is done on purpose :) Konohamaru and co are around 8 :D love the introduction to Gaara immediately catches your attention :) its dope how they throw these new characters at us in such an intriguing way, this is where the world gets bigger :) dont worry many people thought Kurenai got the Sharingan first time watching xD Sasuke got proper humbling here from Lee, would say a much needed one :P obviously Lee is based on Bruce Lee :) Lee and Gai are an amazing duo :D poor Hinata she is having it tough with Naruto xD the fact that they made the first part of this Chunin Exam a written test was really surprising but its super cool, they found a way to make it very interesting and relevant, love the way they demonstrate people's abilities via this test, give us a little taste, clever :) they obviously spotted the cheating it was all about the quality, you get thrown out if its shit, Ibiki noticed both Gaara and Kankuro :D Sakura and Hinata actually managed to answer without cheating they are big brain :) Ibiki is a good proctor he gave them a proper lesson, obviously got experience and can lead by example :) Naruto just pushed through and managed to survive the challenge :D I know you have seen some future stuff already but still beware of spoilers people love doing it :P cant wait for more! :)
18:12 when Sasuke says "is he even human?" in the dub, it's a bit different in the manga. I'm pretty sure he said something like "is this a human?" while looking confused at Gai's appearance. He actually literally thought Gai was some kind of animal or alien.

Regarding the information gathering part of the exams: Certain aspects of the promotion to Chunin itself are still determined by the Village who the ninja belongs to. While it didn't directly factor into passing or failing the first stage (except for instantly filtering the bad cheaters), it does have an effect on judging if someone is truly fit to be a Chunin or not.
Yeah the ranking system for our 9 rookies was clearly irregular, Iruka Sensei wasn't necessarily being a worry-wart he's thinking like you are. "why are we recommending 9 fresh out of the bin students for this exam", and all the background characters being like "whoa all those rookies"? It seems so long the sensei says they're recommended they're allowed to apply
Gaara's tattoo is actually interesting. It's not something edgy like damaged. Some people might consider it a spoiler but it's a japanese kanji in a japanese manga so I think we are meant to know. It says love.
the exams also work as a advertisement for ninja hire on top of the balance of power, if a village dominates they will get more interest and can change higher premiums

19:02 its hilarious because that's what EVERYONE kept saying back during this time. because the show really does give ALOT of power to sasuke, while naruto has a much slower and procedural growth. its something you dont see in any other shonnen. which is also why the series work so well. it allows us to see that naruto isnt just a gary stu. he is often the butt of jokes earlier on, and he is alot weaker by comparisson. i dont want to spoil but the show does an amazing job at making it worth the wait.
The fact that they started with a full 10 points meant that as long as they didn’t loose points they would pass. And sometimes if you know you cant get away with the info gathering, its best not to give the rest of the team away by drawing attention to them. Knowing how to not sabotage the team effort is just as important as being able to get the job done.

But, as you see, we're a long way from being a strong team - Naruto is jealous of Sasuke, Sakura is Sasuke-obsessed, and Sasuke is completely dismissive of both of them. He's not expecting them to win the exams at all, just be stuck in a situation where teamwork is mandatory and maybe pull together a little. That's the only reason you stick kids this young in it - notice later that most of the other participants are in their _late_ teens. Also, remember that Kakashi isn't expecting what's coming - normal chunin exams don't get this messy at all. 15:17 And the theme that everyone _claims_ is a core theme of Naruto, when _it is not:_ "hard work vs. talent." This theme is one specific to the Chunin exams, one specific to the characters of Neji and Rock Lee, and one resolved before the time skip. Everyone thinks it's the big theme, though, because the show is very blatant with it, and answers are provided, ie. they don't have to apply any thought to get it, unlike the three real main themes, which are much more subtle. 16:24 MIGHT GUY! Not gonna lie, I did read DB/DBZ through and through, but never got into another anime for quite some time. A friend of mine got through my thick skull with a stupid bet that I lost, and made me watch a few episodes of Naruto to try and get me hooked... and hooked I Became. I was surprised at the amount of depth the story and each character has, and especially since yeah, there are some easy outs here and there (with the clone jutsu, morphing into a log to prevent being hit, mind tricks and stuff) to get easy wins, it really did a good job actually avoiding those easy outs. Every fight is VERY well thought out and some fights are simply spectacular. I hope you'll enjoy the ride as much as I did when I plowed through the entire serie, Naruto AND Naruto Shippuden. Your reactions reminds me of my own and you've got good intuitions. You're often right on your predictions, and that makes me REALLY intrigued if you're gonna be able to guess how the many, many battles ahead are gonna end. You're gonna have a good time, I can assure you that, and I'll follow along for the ride. :)

Regarding the information gathering part of the exams: Certain aspects of the promotion to Chunin itself are still determined by the Village who the ninja belongs to. While it didn't directly factor into passing or failing the first stage (except for instantly filtering the bad cheaters), it does have an effect on judging if someone is truly fit to be a Chunin or not.
Yeah the ranking system for our 9 rookies was clearly irregular, Iruka Sensei wasn't necessarily being a worry-wart he's thinking like you are. "why are we recommending 9 fresh out of the bin students for this exam", and all the background characters being like "whoa all those rookies"? It seems so long the sensei says they're recommended they're allowed to apply

Gaara's tattoo is actually interesting. It's not something edgy like damaged. Some people might consider it a spoiler but it's a japanese kanji in a japanese manga so I think we are meant to know. It says love.
the exams also work as a advertisement for ninja hire on top of the balance of power, if a village dominates they will get more interest and can change higher premiums

19:02 its hilarious because that's what EVERYONE kept saying back during this time. because the show really does give ALOT of power to sasuke, while naruto has a much slower and procedural growth.
its something you dont see in any other shonnen. which is also why the series work so well. it allows us to see that naruto isnt just a gary stu. he is often the butt of jokes earlier on, and he is alot weaker by comparisson. i dont want to spoil but the show does an amazing job at making it worth the wait.
The fact that they started with a full 10 points meant that as long as they didn’t loose points they would pass.
And sometimes if you know you cant get away with the info gathering, its best not to give the rest of the team away by drawing attention to them.
Knowing how to not sabotage the team effort is just as important as being able to get the job done.

Guy is one of my favorite characters he's alot like Goku in my opinion he's got a really outgoing loud personality and seems borderline stupied sometimes , but when his backed into a corner he's a complete powerhouse.

It comes down to training - a lot of people think Kakashi is a shit teacher because he's not loading the kids up with flashy jutsu, but that's not the point. Kakashi *very strongly* believes in the importance of teamwork, and will not make them monsters before he makes them a team. But, as you see, we're a long way from being a strong team - Naruto is jealous of Sasuke, Sakura is Sasuke-obsessed, and Sasuke is completely dismissive of both of them. He's not expecting them to win the exams at all, just be stuck in a situation where teamwork is mandatory and maybe pull together a little. That's the only reason you stick kids this young in it - notice later that most of the other participants are in their _late_ teens. Also, remember that Kakashi isn't expecting what's coming - normal chunin exams don't get this messy at all.
15:17 And the theme that everyone _claims_ is a core theme of Naruto, when _it is not:_ "hard work vs. talent." This theme is one specific to the Chunin exams, one specific to the characters of Neji and Rock Lee, and one resolved before the time skip. Everyone thinks it's the big theme, though, because the show is very blatant with it, and answers are provided, ie. they don't have to apply any thought to get it, unlike the three real main themes, which are much more subtle.

Not gonna lie, I did read DB/DBZ through and through, but never got into another anime for quite some time. A friend of mine got through my thick skull with a stupid bet that I lost, and made me watch a few episodes of Naruto to try and get me hooked... and hooked I Became. I was surprised at the amount of depth the story and each character has, and especially since yeah, there are some easy outs here and there (with the clone jutsu, morphing into a log to prevent being hit, mind tricks and stuff) to get easy wins, it really did a good job actually avoiding those easy outs. Every fight is VERY well thought out and some fights are simply spectacular. I hope you'll enjoy the ride as much as I did when I plowed through the entire serie, Naruto AND Naruto Shippuden. Your reactions reminds me of my own and you've got good intuitions. You're often right on your predictions, and that makes me REALLY intrigued if you're gonna be able to guess how the many, many battles ahead are gonna end. You're gonna have a good time, I can assure you that, and I'll follow along for the ride. :)
