  • The man often called the 'morning star' of the Reformation, John Wyclif, lived during the stormy Hundred Years War that raged between England and France. As the Pope threw his support behind the enemies of England, Wyclif's message resonated increasingly with many of his countrymen. More than politics, however, informed the life of this influential figure. His translation of the scriptures, and his deep study of their content, convinced Wyclif that the church had strayed from its central message and mission, and Wyclif courageously called for a renewed devotion to Christ and the scriptures, even though doing so put his life at great risk. Looking at the date that this was published I see that this is new. Yesterday when I got up I came to notice that God was pushing me to the library. And I wondered why, Was it another wonderful lesson to come from my favorite bible teacher Chuck Missler? No it came to be that God was pushing me to meet you and to learn the history that I learned yesterday. The real reasons behind things that take place in the world. With the time that I have off I use it to get a university education. Kind of like John Knox, and education without a diploma. Yesterday I wrote your name down and told my sister to look you up and that's the highest compliment that I can give, The recommendation to someone I love. Thank you for making me smart the kind of smart people think I am.

The Church DID NOT write the Bible. The Church selected the Books of the Bible via the various lists of acceptable Scripture culminating in the Council of Carthage 397. Some Books were discarded (The Gospels of Judas Iscariot, Thomas, and Phillip). Some were kept around that were not elevated to Scripture (Histories such as that of Tacitus & Josephus), Commentaries of various Church Fathers, and Training Manuals (The Didache). The Septuagint became the Old Testament. It was the task of the Church to separate the Wheat from the Chaff and to decide what to do with the stray grains of Oats, Rye, and Barley. We are subject to Scripture but we also have the responsibility to ask "What is Good Scripture as opposed to Bad Scripture?".

Clayton Benignus I am a year late spotting this comment, but I appreciate critical thinking, and we may disagree, which is fine. I feel certain God protects his vital message to us and keeps what we need intact. The Bible is a survivor, though attempts were made to stamp it out. It’s the most published in the most languages book in history. Translated many times, the vital message is virtually unchanged. I have faith that what we have as the accepted scriptures has divinely been protected, and anything left out is not truly necessary. Our creator certainly has the power to direct these matters. Just as he wrote it through inspiration, with the human authors often compelled to write things they did not even understand at the time. Even when it’s not easily apparent why some books are included, through years of study I find them all relevant. I do NOT believe countless religions adhere to bible truth, but then Jesus made it clear this would happen. We each are personally accountable for examining the Bible for ourselves, the dogma and doctrines of men are what is questionable. The truth exists, and sincere prayer for understanding is paramount. The prophesies have been spot on, including ones being fulfilled right now concerning the last days of this old satanic system of things, and the impending fall of false religion and bad government. God will keep his promises of an extremely bright near future, for instance Psalms 37 and Isaiah 35, but there will be tribulation like never before first. The theme throughout is Gods Kingdom, and what it means. Of all the Bible teaches, I am convinced. The Bible answers ALL of life’s toughest questions, about our past and future, and it’s wisdom is timeless. Of course, some people will always say it’s a matter of interpretation. I find it’s a matter of thoroughly examining, comparing, researching, reasoning on all scriptures, considering the original texts and history, praying for guidance, and then drawing logical conclusions. Not everyone may agree with me; I don’t intend to argue with anyone...proving I am right means nothing to me. Sharing a message of hope, to the oppressed that take comfort in what the Bible teaches, that does matter to me. Free will is ours, to accept or deny, any or all. Regardless of different faiths, we all are affected by the universal issue we are caught up in. I am nobody of consequence at all, just sharing a humble opinion. I wish I had seen this video and posted when it uploaded years ago.

I am really loving this... I listened to all 54 Ryan Reeves lectures and then found these... Synergy and complimentarity. The main different effect is I shed many more tears of joy/recognition/lost chance/urgent call... I want to know what dawned on Thomas and fill-in the blank... all this human language is straw... BUT you do a very nice job with it.

Given this is an old video, you will probably never read this, Bruce, but you are the first person I have ever in 74 years heard say that Catholics say “The Church wrote the Bible.” Never heard it in childhood catechism, never heard it in elementary and high school religion classes, never heard it in college theology classes from the Cistercians and Dominicans and Franciscans who taught me. And I’ve never heard it in any Sunday sermon. You know another Catholic Church from the one I’ve lived. Such misrepresentation so stated does not aid in the healing of Jesus’ one Church.

The same "denomination problem" that Protestantism is accused of is also rampant in Catholicism as well, but it is just hidden under the rug in an attempt to put up the façade of "unity". For instance, the priests and the clergy claim that they do not elevate Mary to the level of reverence due to Jesus, and yet Mary worship is rampant in South America, the Philippines, and other Spanish conquered countries. In some of their churches, they even have the gall to put up representations of Mary on the cross, not Jesus. Traditions of local cultures have also twisted the understanding of the teachings that Rome promotes, so the RCC is equally guilty of having "denominations".

GK Chesterton argues very much along these lines (i.e. that the Bible was subject to the church). He uses the metaphor of a parade (I can't remember which writing it was).

I have been following your lecture.
    Amazing lecture. 🙏
I love that you described how God protects wycliff till the end. He somehow wreck havoc the corrupt church, which I believe to protect wycliff until his works completed.
I listened to your lecture on the way to works.
And got pretty bad traffic here in Indonesia. But somehow I felt wish the traffic is a bit worse so that I could listen your lecture a bit longer.....
Pray that God blessed you thru your teachings...
And that God protects you as he protects wycliff when he taught the lollard....

Very engaging and pitched at an easy to understand level, they engaged me enough to pursue the historical scholarship of Church History and have never looked back since. Our God is great and has worked tremendously through his very flawed children to bring about his purposes!

That may be true but the Roman Catholic Church does say that they determined which books of the Bible are canonical or inspired by the Holy Spirit. That is not true. The Roman Catholic Church had nothing to do with determining which books of the Old Testament were scripture. They also had very little to do with the New Testament canonization. The books of the Bible especially the gospels and Pauls writings were copied and distributed by people from the time they were written. People back at the time of the writings and shortly thereafter knew which writings were determined to be inspired scripture. There are only a few books which were argued about and finally became scripture.
This man speaking knows more about church history than I could ever hope to know.

These are the greatest lectures i have ever had the pleasure to listen to. When i first became a Cjristian as a tenager my mind opened up and i became a history buff which changed my life as i became a straight A student especially in History. Why most of my friends had and have the opposite view after becoming a Christian is beyond my comprehension . I have been watching your videos for about a year now and many i watch over and over. A lot to grasp for a person with an average IQ but i really enjoy history and the bible as it relates to it. And my faith is increased by knowing that such knowledge is possessed by Christians in a world full of sceptics because of the purposeful picking apart of the fundamentalist by the atheist. Your messages at the ent are especially awesome. Thank you, i hope you keep it up even though i will never get tired of the ;lessons you have already published. I even want to find a Presbyterian Church near me in Sacramento , Know of any ? Like some of the traditional Churches there is a variety of divisions . right. thanks again T.T. Randy.

I can't believe how faithful in commenting back on my comments . And fast to. With all the videos you make to take this time is a wonderful testimony. You may not realise it but you are like a celebrity to me and to actually be valued enough for you to answer my questions means a lot to me .Thanks again. I know what you mean i have dabbled in the Lutheran Church . When i was friended with an Lutheran Minster who was also my land lord. I tried to win him over to my Assemble of God .Church but he he wan the battle and was instrumental in my theological studies as we began studying together and i went to his Church for a couple years. He was pretty liberal , i was shocked at first but got used to it. Thanks again i won't bother you too much. PS I like where you said " This is Church History who could call it dull".

It might be helpful to mention the next papal order after the unum sanctum... the ausculta fili, in which the Pope claimed jurisdiction of the "air" or everything spiritual... AND claimed the jurisdiction of time so that everyone must follow the same clock and calendar. With these two orders, the Pope claimed superiority over all kings/monarchs everywhere. My question... just how was one supposed to file a counter claim to challenge? Also, it might be helpful to review the definition of "catholic". Apparently the word means "universally accepted", i.e., gravity is universally catholic.

    Consider
Important to quantify and qualify those that challenge (correct); to experience and "sola escritura", not a feeling nor huntch.
In a manner of speech "Good Bareans".

The proposition that the Church wrote the Bible is true in the sense that the Holy Spirit wrote it through the men who penned it, and in the sense that (per Irenaeus) where the Holy Spirit is, there is the Church. It has to be read together with Augustine's adage "securus judicat orbis terrarum". The consensus of the whole Church is the point of reference for verifying that this or that writing is divine Scripture.

I love your historical presentations (you are such a smooth speaker/teacher) and will continue to review your You Tube files after 1000 BC because your chronology before Samuel the prophet is grossly in error and the cause for much distortion. Surely you can see the conflict you have with just Egypt's chronology and the lack of archeological data to support your accounts between the 1st and 3rd millenniums BC. I am trying to help you. Noah's flood was 3519 BC, the Ark beached on the highest peak of the Kush Mountains. Abraham was born in 3226 BC. The Exodus was 2447 BC. Those are just three anchor points for you to work with. The correction factor is found in I Kings 6:1 that should read 1, 480 years. I can explain the error. This 1,480 years is qualified by the position of the Great Pyramid astronomically and agrees with the translated records from Abydos Egypt. This correction will fix your problems with the chronologies of the Indus Valley, Babylon, Persia and Egypt.
Frankly, I don't care if you make the correction or not. That's your business. Just thought I'd help. You know, if you had read the Judges you would know that 480 years can not be correct.
