Great video! It reminds me of my first 50k a few months ago. 8 laps on a 4 mile loop with 1 big hill. Halfway up the hill was a sign that read "You paid for this!" Every lap I had to laugh and recognize that I - and 174 other runners- spent many many hours and hundreds of dollars for the privilege of putting myself through this "suffering ". And it made every second and every cent worthwhile.
I don't know if I'm mentally tough, but I trick myself with simple techniques. I use a five minute rule, for other stuff I have to do, like practicing guitar, now practicing Spanish and several other "chores". I say to myself: "Do five minutes!" When I'm into it, those five minutes turn into 30 minutes, because I'm having fun and got started. I use some similar techniques when I want to quit my runs. I just turned 40 and just started running. I'm just passed the point where every run feels like pure pain. I'm starting to be able to enjoy my runs and would like to be able to run longer. I usually do 2-3 runs per week, from 5-12km. It's -20C around here now, so sometimes i just want to quit, because it's so frigging unpleasant. But I've created a course that I can do laps on, that are approx 5km and I will at least complete ONE full lap. There are a few places on this lap, that I can do shortcuts, so as I approach the "one lap mark", I'll talk myself into running to the first shortcut. Making it about 1km longer. But when I get to that point, I'll tell myself, hey, you can do this and just pass that shortcut, which will commit me to 4 more km. IF I chose the shortcut, I get down to a track and field stadium, so I can actually extend my run on the track for as long as I can be bothered. Just one more round. Maybe I'll speed up for one round, see how that feels, then run slower. Willpower is short term, so I use these small tricks, to fool myself into doing the thing. I hope, that it will teach me that I CAN do this, and do this mental self persuasion easier. Just wanted to mention it, maybe it can be useful to someone else?
@@Kelly_Ben Oh yes, it certainly work with housecleaning too! I find that getting started, is the hard part. Give it a try, you might just unlock a new you! 🥳

Years ago, a Navy Seal told me that during BUDS, the medical staff will continue checking the candidates for hypothermia. If you show the signs, they send you up to the “hot tub” to get your temp back up, then you can get back in the mix. He said not one guy sent to the tub ever came back....he said he was told that after being in such cold misery for so long, once you had the comfort of the tub, it would just break people mentally. The candidates have to quit on their own, of course. I hate the cold....and I hate freezing cold water. So, during the prep to any “A” race, when I hit the shower, I step in, stand under the shower head, and then turn on the water blasting myself with the freezing water til it gets hot. After being hot for 10 seconds, it’s back to another 30 of freezing water. I keep doing this til I quit. I’m not sure how many cycles I have gone, but it is mentally taxing and incredibly miserable...even more miserable than when I bonked at mile 21-22 in a marathon. The misery of the water temp cycles suck, and it’s a game I can never win...I always quit sometime....but that simple thing puts good callouses on the brain. I highly recommend.

Love this! I do it with housecleaning, my least favorite activity. I never thought to try it on my runs!
