I never really understood in Afghanistan, why loads of completely inappropriate types of aircraft were directed to provide infantry support, was it because they just didn't have enough apaches or was it because of the distances to travel?
Simply put, there just weren't enough Apache's to cover the entire battle space, even with the UK, Dutch, U.S. contingents. Every coalition soldier wanted A-10's & Apache's overhead but it just wasn't possible.
Simply not enough. You have to take into account you need at least 1 team of 2 in the air for a 5 hour window, 24 hours a day. Surging maybe 1 or 2 extra teams during special missions or peak fighting times, plus all the aircraft that now have maintenance due because you're burning through hours on the aircraft. And all this is just to cover maybe a 200 mile area

The old British built Apaches had 2100hp Rolls Royce engines, upgraded from 1900hp GE engines of the US D model. The E model all have the same GE engines at 2000hp. Old UK top speed was around 290 kph, they can now run upto 350kph. This is down to a new engine, gearbox and new rotor blades. Note this is all open source information so might be not be perfectly correct as the true performance will be classified.
The E model is lighter thanks mostly to a redesign of the transmission which is now both stronger and 500lb lighter. The D model added weight compared to the A model and now the weight is closer to the A model while having much more sensors.

A hellfire missile has a range of up to 11km, a Spike missile has a range of 8km and a Brimstone missile has a range of 40km from a helicopter. The Apache E can use other targeting systems which allows something else to find the target well out of range of the enemy.

There is no such then as an S400, it's just a renamed S300 used for propaganda. "The S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler), previously known as the S-300 PMU-3" that being said, this being a helicopter would stand no chance. Boeing has another cargo aircraft, the SB-1. It can go 271 mph or 437 kmph. Boeing wants to boost the cruise speed to 460 kmph.
The Chinook was faster than the AH64 that escorted it.

You'd not fly an attack helicopter near a well equipped SAM site or even in the same battle space.
