Did anyone else ever notice that Sadie's husbands car was the same make, model, year, and color as the one from the movie Christine? A 1958 Plymouth Fury. Basically a Christine cameo. You can see it in Season 1 Episode 5 as Jake is walking up to the house and it's parked outside. Kinda strange that her husband was a nutjob exactly how Arnie was from the movie Christine.
i mean jake is bothered by the racial divide in some points of the book, there's a whole scene with him looking at the ''black'' side of the restroom and realizing that it's just a ditch and a plank instead of an actual toilette, this same scene is also referenced more than once in the book, he also comments at some point about all of his students being white i believe, and there's a few characters that have very racist comments like Rosette on Mercedes Street, so you can't say that the show "at least acknowledges the existence of racism" because so does the book, but i mean at the same time, the book isn't about racism, so it doesn't need to be at the forefront of his social interactions the whole time
It's my favorite book of ALL TIME. The Hulu show was pretty good. I didn't like some of the changes that made no sense as to why they did it. But it's one of the better adaptions.
I remember jake was Washing his hands or something and there being a bathroom labelled “coloured” in the book and that being one of the major moments. Maybe I’m misremembering, probably time for a reread
My comment probably doesn't matter because this is 3 years later...but there was a big moment where Jake needs to use the bathroom and sees the "colored" bathroom which was just a stream, if you needed to piss you just did it into the stream, if you had to shit you sat on a piece of wood that was laid over the stream
Highly underrated series and performance by James Franco and the cast. It literally felt you were transported in time back to the early 1960s in terms of its immersion and details.
I always enjoyed that when he changes things it doesn't necessarily improve the world. Im a full believer of the butterfly effect. I feel that his death triggered many things that we can't foresee. I loved the show.
Haven't seen the show yet, but my girlfriend is coming over tomorrow and I plan on starting it. I just finished the book before coming back and finishing this video. I'm not a big crier at all. I'm 20 and the only real time I've cried in the past 8-10 years was when my grandfather passed...and when I finished this book. I found myself much more invested in Jake and Sadie's relationship than the plot at some points (lol). The last 20 pages of this book KILLED me. I had a knot in my throat the whole time, and it was the last line in the book that finally broke me. This was an amazing book, and I can't wait to watch the show (but i know it won't be able to live up to what the book did for me).
Have yet to read the book but really enjoyed the show. The acting seems to be divisive but I thought the actors did a great job and I really felt for them and the things happening. My only issue is sometimes it felt like it lost focus on what was supposed to be happening and just focused on the B story for too long at times or wouldn't elaborate more on the stuff I wanted to see more of. Regardless I enjoyed the show A BUNCH! Definitely adding the book to my list of things to read.
Daniel, why don’t you add a secondary, spoiler review after a non spoiler review? Seems like a missed opportunity. Could be less editet, more looser. You could do it live, do discussion the book/series with the fans.
I was in the JFK museum in the Dallas, TX book depository building when they were filming a scene in Dealey plaza where Kennedy was shot. Really cool experience to see it being filmed!

I'm a long time fan of the channel. I'm also a long time fan of Stephen King. I have not seen the show, but I read the book soon after it came out. I am 70 years old and was 13 when the assassination happened, so I have real world experience about this time in history. Spoiler alert from this point forward. I enjoyed the book very much (The Stand is my all time favorite from Stephen King)......with a big exception the the resolution to the assassination. I have seen Mr King interviewed, and he explained how he came to his conclusion of the events after researching it in depth. Without sounding like a conspiracy nut, I have also done a great deal of research in to the assassination over the years. I am 100% convinced that a conspiracy took place, and that the killing shot was from behind the fence on the grassy knoll. There are far too many things to go in to for a comment here. But, obviously, I was quite disappointed in the resolution of that aspect to the story. Other than that, it was an enjoyable book.
I’m my heart, James Franco was perfect for this role, how dare you, lol. That being said, thanks for calling attention to one of my favorite books. This is the book I recommend to ppl who say they aren’t Stephen King fans.
I didn't like how they handled the "time fighting back" aspect in the show. In the book, it's proportional to what is being changed, so when Al was explaining how he couldn't save the little girl from being paralysed even with multiple attempts, it just made Jake stopping JFK's assassination (which seemed easier in the show than in the books) so much more unbelievable.
@@TT-qc2mu so far only Carrie and half of 'Salem's Lot. My friend and I are doing a slow buddy read of all King's fiction in publication order and talking about what we read each week on my channel. th-cam.com/play/PLFYvCg_UwaXRvyWnsoPwY96eGkC-R5r4e.html
@@TT-qc2mu wow, thanks. And let me apologize in advance for how long the videos are! We have actually been discussing a way to cut the run time down, so future videos should be better. Enjoy
As a Kennedy fan, I really thought they nailed all of that. But I also think that the whole central premise and conclusion is kind of horrifying. Knowing what's coming and being surrounded by people who don't...
YES! I'm so happy someone else's favorite SK book is 11/22/63! Also love Chris Cooper, my favorite grumpy dad actor ( J.K. Simmons is a close second) especially in October Sky.
I recently read the book and absolutely loved it. Went straight into the TV show as soon as I finished it and was honestly so disappointed by the first 2 episodes that I didn't continue. I usually like James Franco but wasn't a big fan of his portrayal of Jake. I have to agree with your criticism here. Second, and what bothered me the most, was how they were shoving the "the past does not want to be changed" all up in my face and then did not stay consistent with it. I get that the show needed more action and wanted to be scarier but I was sooo bothered by this. But I do value your opinion so I am considering giving it another shot...
Do you review alternate history series? Just learned about "Clash of Eagles." Barely know a thing about it, except the basic premise. Worthwhile, recommended, disrecommended?
Also, I stopped thinking of King as a horror writer and started thinking of him as a horror-focused urban fantasy author sometime around the publishing of Wizard and Glass.
I always find it hard when they change very important parts in the storylines that don't need changing. Especially when it doesn't feel necessary for production costs or anything like that. I felt like the story of one of my absolute favourite King (if not THE) was getting butchered. I stopped after three episodes, two or three years ago. Should I rewatch, knowing I hate shifts in storylines in adaptations?
planned to read the book and watch the adaptation simultaneously. book first then series episodes second, can anyone please tell me how the book's chapters are divided into episodes of the series accordingly?
Ok, watched your no spoilers part here. I read the first 1/2 of the book just a few years ago and loved it but the middle got so bogged down and slow I gave up. Then I watched the excellent (9 out of 10 IMHO) Hulu series. I totally agree that James Franko was not the best choice for the part but otherwise it is an excellent series. Back to the book I now have the hardback and determined to read it all this time.
Also in the biography film "127 Hours" for me it's Franco's best performance. I wish he take more serious roles cause I prefer him in it. despite I like Pineapple Express.
Read the book. One of my favorites. Since hubby doesn't like reading I am hoping the show is easy for him to follow. He has always been intrigued with the assassination of JFK even though he was a toddler at the time.
I read the book, and it definitely wasn’t my favorite King book, but it’s still really good. I think King can write that time period excellently (“It” is my favorite King work because of the kids’ half). I didn’t realize the adaptation was out, I’ll have to watch that!
My mom did not even finish watching this adaptation because she hated all of the changes they made. She said they practically altered the entire storyline and made some strange choices throughout. However, I'm not sure how many episodes she watched before giving up.
I thought Sadie was the most memorable part of the show. She really seemed like Sadie from the book… definitely helps that she’s gorgeous but still she did an amazing job
I saw the miniseries back near its original release and really liked it. I'd say that it was probably the bit of King media I most liked that I was familiar with at the time (though having read The Dark Tower series, I'd choose that now, I think.) Franco's performance here really worked for me because I read it as helping to drive home that Jake isn't a hero or some paragon of anything. This isn't a comic book (adaptation) or an epic -- he's just a guy who has an incredible opportunity and tries to do what seems right, even if he's a less-than-exemplary, kind of annoying guy. But I haven't seen Franco in very much, so maybe he's just sticking to a brand that I don't know well enough to be annoyed by. I'm also very curious if the "Yellow Card Man" (as he's credited) shows up in other King stories either as is or as some more major character whose story is being summarized by his longest appearance in the show/book. I'd be down for an axis of King's multiverse which follows various time travelers and their attempts to change various things or at least exploit the capacity to time travel.
Chris Cooper! What's your favorite Chis Cooper movie? I love October Sky; next to American Beauty it may be CC at his most emotionally repressed hard-ass, but there's glimmers of a heart of gold beneath that his son (Jake Gyllenhal) just might be be able to reach _and_ become a sissy-assed rocket scientist.
Hello there:). Guys what should I do to try and release a book ? Im living in London for two years now . I'm Romanian and my fantasy book it's full of the folklore that you can find in the east of Europe something like the Witcher book's,, but much more grimdark , more realistic as well , please help me if you know what should I do, :) thanks
I just finished watching the show. I actually started watching because of this video so I thought Id come back and leave my thoughts. Ill keep it short. It is fantastic so long as you dont think too much and just let yourself be carried along by the story. Are there massive gaping plot holes? Sure, its a time travel movie so of course there are. Are there unaddressed issues that they really should have brought up at some point? Yeah, I dont get why we never had a scene with Al in the present at the end of episode 8. Supposedly Jake was only gone for two minutes so where was Al? But none of these questions are in any real way detrimental to my enjoyment of the story. It excelled at bringing me back to a bygone era more so perhaps than any show Ive ever watched and it was a wonderfully tense and engaging look into a fascinating bit of history. 8.5/10
Just finished the book today. For me, any more social commentary of the times would lessen my enjoyment. I think King got it exactly right. And about the Jakes character development, I never felt I needed to know more. I prefer the ideas and the story over character. My only criticism considers the time portal. I hoped the Green Card Man would explain more about its origins. Is there more of them across the world? What would the implications of that be? How are the Green Card Men selected for the "job"? That, and the fact that the future after eliminating Oswald had to be bleak. I expected something sinister, but in completely different vain, much more technologically utopian (but with a dark twist).
Its funny that James Franco comes off that way. To me it seems like he stays James Franco, not the character. I love when i dont see the actor, only the character and with Franco, he does not normally accomplish that.
So I saw the show when it first came out and thought it was really good. I've never really been into books and even now that I have a number of audioboks from a few different authors I really don't have much of a knowledge or even a care for authors and books. And I generally just can't stand horror. Personally I find it boring and narratively unsatisfying(at least in regards to film and TV never tried and audio book and don't really care to). So naturally despite knowing that Stephen King is a prolific horror author and that he has a number of on screen adaptations I really knew any of the titles his name was attached to. I while after I saw the show (and basically forgot 90% of it) I came across you talking about how you loved the book so much. So I used an audible credit because at very least if I didn't like it audible has a great return policy. but I found my enjoying it and I wasn't really comparing because I had forgotten so much from the show. Personally I thought the book was just ok I'll probably listen to it again some day once or twice. For me that rates as just alright because I tend to re-watch or re-listen to things I love often. I have seen Star Wars The Clone Wars 8 - 9 times now, the last airbender 4-5 times, Geroge's 6 films a couple hundred times, and so on. Since I opened my audible account in 2017 I've listened to all three of the stormlight archive books 4-5 times now the two kingkiller chronicles 3-4 times skyward 4 times (that is my favourite book ATM), both era's of mistborn 3 times, the Ahsoka novel 3 times, the punch escrow 3 times (not my genre so I found it only ok but Matt Mercer read it so it's automatically better), and Shadow of the Conqueror twice. There is more but to not go on for a year the point is if I might listen to 11.22.63 again once or twice in my life that honestly means that I find it to be a 3 or 4/10 using Daniel's version of that scale (which I also happen to think is the fairest way to use the scale :P)
The starting was great, the ending was spectacular, but it was a bit let down towards the middle, especially, after he loses his memory. Should have had least 4 more episodes to show a much detailed version of the book. It felt very hasty leading to the final episode
I need to reread the book before watching the series. It's been a while, 9 years. I gave it 4 stars, don't remember what prevented it from being perfect for me, but I remember thinking it was very solid. Oh, and Oswald's wife is Marina. And I think Franco was a producer on this, so of course he'd cast himself in the lead, because actor's are selfish (although, I think he's an alright actor. Can't stand his brother though)
Loved Chris Cooper in Lone Star a totally underated movie (as in not highly seen). Really enjoyed 11/22/63, as both book and a series. I don't know that is one of my all time favs of King's but it was very good read. I should rewatch the series.
One question that I had to the book readers as a tv show watcher only, why couldn’t they just kill Lee and go back to the future and see what changed? Why go through all of this just to see if it was him or not? Morally, it wouldn’t matter much to kill him if you could just go back and reset it. This was one of my biggest gripes with the series and I would like to understand if there was a solid reason.
I really wish that Bill was given a better send off, either not having him commit suicide or having jake go back and take Bill with him, that would’ve been incredible.
your main criticism are exactly mine as well. Bill was handled terribly (and his acting I found very much TV-like). I didnt get over James Franco though. And the guardians were a bit strange i found. I would LOVE to see another adaptation wirh a different lead and closer to the book. Cant imagine it being so hard if you give the main character a siedekick to talk to and work things out AND staying closer to the book. I bought the book because of JFK but while reading I just wanted to forget about the mission and just stay there with George an d Sadie…

i mean jake is bothered by the racial divide in some points of the book, there's a whole scene with him looking at the ''black'' side of the restroom and realizing that it's just a ditch and a plank instead of an actual toilette, this same scene is also referenced more than once in the book, he also comments at some point about all of his students being white i believe, and there's a few characters that have very racist comments like Rosette on Mercedes Street, so you can't say that the show "at least acknowledges the existence of racism" because so does the book, but i mean at the same time, the book isn't about racism, so it doesn't need to be at the forefront of his social interactions the whole time
It's my favorite book of ALL TIME.
Im just here to tell you to read and review insomnia already, my boi Ralph needs some love.
I just wanna see the interaction with the caracthers from "It" on the TV Show.
Wish I could watch this somewhere other than Hulu :(
Its on Google Play
It’s on dvd
I agree with you - I've been a "Constant Reader" of Stephen King since the '80's and I think this is his best book.
This is creepy as I literally started reading the book this afternoon. Looking forward to it!
I just started reading Stephen King and I've been loving it so far
Nice! I started back in February. What have you read so far?
@@TT-qc2mu so far only Carrie and half of 'Salem's Lot. My friend and I are doing a slow buddy read of all King's fiction in publication order and talking about what we read each week on my channel.

Oh cool! I'm subbing. Just started salems lot today
@@TT-qc2mu wow, thanks. And let me apologize in advance for how long the videos are! We have actually been discussing a way to cut the run time down, so future videos should be better. Enjoy
@@emosongsandreadalongs I don't mind! I'll treat it like a podcast
Definitely the best ending to a Stephen King book, which as any Stephen King fan knows is problematic and in most of his work.
Obligatory: READ REVIVAL!
One of the best tv series I've watched since quarantine.
I'm rewatching this, this week.
Its clear you have a negative bias about Franco, I think you're fair to say that. But he did brilliantly in this role
Just finished the series today and you post a video an hour later. What a coincidence!
As a Kennedy fan, I really thought they nailed all of that. But I also think that the whole central premise and conclusion is kind of horrifying. Knowing what's coming and being surrounded by people who don't...
Enjoying the TV series reviews 👌 hope you keep doing more
If you're a Chris Cooper fan and want to watch him in an excellent lead role, try LONE STAR. Fantastic film, and he's great in it.
For some reason I remember the ending being disappointing
Do you review alternate history series? Just learned about "Clash of Eagles." Barely know a thing about it, except the basic premise. Worthwhile, recommended, disrecommended?
LOVED the book (especially the cameos from the characters from IT) and thought the adaptation was solid. Your criticisms are spot on.
Been reading stephen king for 30 years and 11/22/63 is hands down my favourite of his work
11/22/63 is one of my top 5 stephen king books. I also really enjoyed the show, james franco did a great job in this compared to other films.
planned to read the book and watch the adaptation simultaneously. book first then series episodes second, can anyone please tell me how the book's chapters are divided into episodes of the series accordingly?
Commenting because it helps
Hmmm
Ok, watched your no spoilers part here. I read the first 1/2 of the book just a few years ago and loved it but the middle got so bogged down and slow I gave up. Then I watched the excellent (9 out of 10 IMHO) Hulu series. I totally agree that James Franko was not the best choice for the part but otherwise it is an excellent series. Back to the book I now have the hardback and determined to read it all this time.
James Franco was in the Spiderman movies so I both agree and disagree with your take.
Also in the biography film "127 Hours" for me it's Franco's best performance. I wish he take more serious roles cause I prefer him in it. despite I like Pineapple Express.
My favorite book of all time. Can't stand how fast they move through the beginning
Sarah Gadon is such a good actress!!! She has solid performances in time period movies like Belle and she was hilarious in Letterkenny.
I thought Sadie was the most memorable part of the show. She really seemed like Sadie from the book… definitely helps that she’s gorgeous but still she did an amazing job
I saw the miniseries back near its original release and really liked it. I'd say that it was probably the bit of King media I most liked that I was familiar with at the time (though having read The Dark Tower series, I'd choose that now, I think.)
Franco's performance here really worked for me because I read it as helping to drive home that Jake isn't a hero or some paragon of anything.
Watched the show first and pick up the book afterwards. Loved both. Probably one of my favourite endings for a book/tv show ever.
James Franco is good man... hated for whatever reason...but he's good.
11/22/63 is also one of my favorite SK books. I badly want to watch the Hulu adaptation but Hulu is not available in my country :(
I really enjoyed this but I haven't read the book & I have no issue with James Franco. Please review Red Country Daniel you know you want to.
Didn't this show come out years ago?
Yes it did a think around 5 years ago
The starting was great, the ending was spectacular, but it was a bit let down towards the middle, especially, after he loses his memory. Should have had least 4 more episodes to show a much detailed version of the book. It felt very hasty leading to the final episode
The actress for Sadie was also in season two of Castle Rock, the season she was in was too dark for me but I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
I haven’t read this book, but I don’t typically read Stephen King. But it seemed like a pretty cool story. Thanks for sharing your opinions!
Hey I'd love a review of sufficiently advanced magic
your main criticism are exactly mine as well.
You've been mentioning trying to read some si fi. Was wondering if you've read the hyperion cantos by Dan Simmons. Won the Hugo and the locus awards. It's amazing
