  • Dressing (sharpening) the millstones at the Old Stone Mill in Delta Ontario.
Roland Tetrault, master miller, teaches volunteer millers Art Shaw and Chris Wooding how to dress (sharpen) the millstones. Although the stones are made of hard quartz, the grooves in the stones, which provide the cutting surface for the grain, wear down over time.
The trick is that the grooves have to be re-established while maintaining the flat surface of the stones. A board with a coating of wet red ochre is used to highlight the high spots on the stones and it is these spots that are re-grooved.

This video was very informative and very interesting. The gentleman giving the instruction was very interesting. Wishing that there was more to see the full process. If ever I could have a mill this would e the kind. Thanks very much.

Thanks - the video was shot with a Canon 60D and a Rode shotgun microphone (a budget system). The white noise in the background is the water running through the raceway inside the mill (so not ideal conditions).

@@kww1832 This summer I will be employed as a miller in Denmark's luckiest mill. And must be in charge of the exhibition in the magazine house. As well as making pictograms so that guests from home and abroad can see how the mill worked when it was in use. Is it a possibility that I have to use your film clip, which so painterly describes how a mill grinds flour and how to dress a millstone. If I can be allowed, I would like to be able to use an original copy so that I can put Danish subtitles under your descriptions. Hoping for a positive answer. As a small greeting, I send some links from Havnbjerg Mill, which has also been the location for the film In War and Love. Mail: Anton Johannsen: an2n@bbsyd.dk
