  • Bus trip Africa: From MOMBASA to DAR ES SALAAM by Modern Coast bus-12 hours by bus on the way in Africa from Kenya to Tanzania.
You are in Mombasa and want to Dar es Salaam and then on to Zanzibar? Of course you can fly to Tanzania and that is much faster.
But it's much more exciting when you take the bus from Mombasa in Kenya to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The journey takes around 12 hours, but is a lot cheaper than the flight from Kenya's port city of Mombasa to Tanzania. Of course, provided you don't mind if you've been traveling by bus in Africa for so long.
You can book the bus ticket online, in travel agencies or directly at the hotel in Mombasa. I got my bus ticket at the Reef Hotel Mombasa on Nyali Beach. Including seat selection. It is also advisable to book a taxi that will take you to the bus in the morning.
For just a few euros extra you can also book a seat in first class or a VIP seat. Yes, you've read that correctly. The Modern Coast bus from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam has normal seats, 1st class seats and VIP seats.
As you can see in the video, I was sitting right behind the bus driver. The two seats were extra wide and there was a lot more space for the legs than in the rows further back.
This comfort with additional legroom should also be worth a few euros to you, after all, the drive from Kenya to Tanzania takes more than 10 hours.
It started early in the morning in Mombasa and in the late afternoon the Modern Coast bus arrived in Dar es Salaam. At the border crossing from Kenya to Tanzania, all passengers had to go through the border control with their luggage. This process alone took just under an hour. The passports of all passengers have been checked thoroughly, which then takes a certain amount of time.
The bus was of course not the very latest model. But I already felt safe while driving. Although the road traffic in Africa takes a little getting used to, of course we cannot compare it to the conditions in Germany. But that should be clear to everyone who travels by bus and train in Africa.
Probably one of the most frequently used control elements in the bus was probably the horn, which the bus driver felt used a thousand times during the entire journey. Fortunately, there were no dangerous situations or clashes.
Ultimately, the bus driver brought us safely to Dar es Salaam.
The long bus journey through two countries also had a lot to offer in terms of landscape. From big stories, small villages, a river crossing and untouched nature, everything was there.
I filmed a good part of the ride with my Sony Actioncam.
Have fun with my bus video and the bus company Modern Coast from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam. :-)
And even if you are not planning to take the bus from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam or vice versa: If you have never taken a bus trip like this in Africa before, then my video will give you a good first impression of what you might expect Bus tour in Africa might expect.

Nice video though you should have recorded the video without that background music to hear the sweet engine of the Scania bus all through as the driver shifts through the gears not unless that music was playing in the bus! What time did the bus leave Mombasa to Dar Es Salaam? At 06:00 hrs in the morning?

The Modern Coast and Tahmeed were just side by side at the ferry! Must have both had the same departure times for their destinations!

Wow cool hope you enjoyed, but the driver is a bully on the road, overtaking without a plan or considering the oncoming cars.
