    I don't know why, but i love seeing what other people bring for travel (much more so than studio supplies). Loved your video. Yes, I love the Faber Castile erasers. Why people still like art gum?! I have some binder clips, empty slide (for figuring out my view), and a small natural sponge. Have yet to use any of these though. I really like the sock idea.

      Thanks so much Arleesha! I surprised myself with that one. That seems to be the way though - the less pressure I put on myself to do anything "great" (e.g. I'm on a dark airplane passing the time, so whatevs haha) the better things turn out... Perhaps there's something to that... 😂

    Your Sketchbook sure holds some masterpieces! Wowsers! And with your big 'ol hand shadow impeding on your light makes it all that more impressive. I still don't like water brushes so what I pack a cleaned out Pringles can to store my regular brushes and they just go on the road with me. It's all very high class. 🤗

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aww thank you as always Tiffany! That's a pretty great tip about the pringles can! I specifically bought a brush roll up thingy when I first started and use to take that to class with me... but somewhere along the way I must have gotten too lazy? I think it's purely the water cups and not wanting to deal with them when I'm out or even in other peoples houses haha.

      Another great idea for a brush carrier is a bamboo place mat or sushi rolling mat from the dollar store. They hold the brushes, allow air circulation, and, with the addition of a ribbon or elastic band, keep brushes from moving around and getting crushed bristles.

    You brought the stag back to life, I am also not a fan of trophy hunting and do my best to avoid it as well. But in your sketch he looked very vibrant.

    My new favorite watercolor thing is a PVA micropore sponge cloth thing called an Absorber. I have three in the Mini size. They are INCREDIBLY THIRSTY and will absorb a huge amount of water without really even feeling wet, and they rinse pretty clean in water. I’m using them for my wipe rag here at home and I bet they’d be great for a travel system too. Upside: almost infinitely reusable. Downside: not biodegradable. But for me the reusability balances it out.

    I enjoy your presentation of your bags. I like the inside pocket and the duel sided imagery. I do not know why I keep watching these travel equipment videos, what people keep in their travel bags, etc. I have not done out n about painting for years but I am still intrigued, there always seems to be something new! Thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to discovering more of your TH-cam Videos!

    The pouches are so beautifull! I think I would love to try the portable painter. I always use my 24 metal palette on the go. It holds a lot of colors and I must consider the sock idea also instead of my paper towels....good idea!!!

    I could not get used to water brushes. The last time I went to my hometown I heard alot of birds singing, lots of crows and a hawk. Kinda sad that I could only hear them and not see them properly. I love bringing my escodas with me they have become a fave of mine. I always love seeing your sketches in your travel sketchbook they are all gorgeous. That stag is handsome.

    I like your travel bag, I'm interested in the travel journal. I am very new to painting but I like urban sketching. I don't have a pouch because I need super fast access to my materials so they live in an outer pocket of my back pack or in a hip pouch. I take a Stillman & Birn Zeta 5x3" pad, two fountain pens (flex nib with black waterproof ink and fine nib loaded with a violet ink) a Dynasty Black Gold 1/4" dagger brush, a water jar, rag and temporary tin of cheap student grade watercolours.
    I've just got some Pentel waterbrushes and am trying to learn how to use them best. I have an actual empty travel tin arriving soon as well as a set of QOR earth tones which I'm excited for!

    That zebra is gorgeous! I’m pretty sure if you had the zebra on a bag my finger would click “buy” before I could come up with reasons why I shouldn’t buy more bags or painting supplies. I could probably be convinced to buy a wolf bag too...I keep staring at your wolf print and trying to figure out where I’d put it (not a lot of wall or shelf space and it seems sad to stuff it in an album where it’d rarely be seen).

    Denise, thank you for this. I am going to Charleston on Tuesday to visit my partner who is working there until June. I have been putting together a sketch kit for travel and I love seeing your sketchbook because I want to use more watercolor on this trip than I have been lately (I primarily do figure drawing these days and it's either ink or watercolor pencil for that ... tangent: I use the sock trick during figuredrawing studio time for watercolor pencil and my Pentel Aquash! It works like a charm!). You gave me a lot of ideas of how to get lots of different kinds of sketches in. I loved the little birdicorns and the floral sketches and those bags are so lovely!

    Thank you for such a thorough look into your travel bag! I've never travelled with watercolours before so it's incredibly handy to see how other artists pack for that sort of thing. So awesome to see you grabbed some water-soluble graphite! One of my favourite artists (Nen Chang) uses it and it always looks so amazing.
    Also, I'm absolutely in love with your zebra portrait! It's so beautiful, and I love the brown tones around its muzzle and the way you rendered the mane.

    I bought a mini ice cube tray from wish..i cut it and cut again so that 2 or 3 squares became one area..for More paints. I got space for 5 more colors. This goes in brush area as I am not wild about this brush. I have other nice travel brushes.

    Our travel bags are almost identical! The only differences are: I use a caran d’ashe aqua brush so I can easily fill them with my little water container, and I use the Da Vinci travel brushes because they’re my favorite! I’d recommend you try adding a neocolor ii white for larger highlight areas. It’s perfectly compact and soooo opaque!

    Nice video! I really like seeing what people bring while traveling. I'm a beginner artist and haven't been away that much so I tried taking different things with me. Usually I always bring the things that I somehow never feel up for while actually on location. But recently I've picked up watercolors which I'm really enjoying so that will be in my bag for next time. I absolutely love your bags do! They are gorgeous and I really like their size as well. I'm quite late to the party but I'll check your shop to see if there is still something left. :D

    Yay white nights and travel pouches! I totes got the chesire cat grin to put all my little lovelies in. I have a very similar set up. But I ditched the white pen for a dab of white gouache. And I carry a safety compass (mainly for bullet journaling not painting) and a glue stick...cause you never know. This was great tho, thanks for the content!

      Aw, thanks Arielle! So glad you like the kitty! A glue stick is actually a GREAT idea! There are several pages throughout this journal that bum me out and I wanted to paint over them pretty badly!

      In Liquid Color I know smoothie77 here on TH-cam mentioned that for his pictures he doesn't like he paints over it with black watercolor and tries a colored pencil sketch. That way he can get practice and "save" his paper.

  • @tobeseve4020

    I like to keep a little pipet with me, which is basically like a cheaper version of an eye dropper that's disposable. It makes it a lot easier to refill the water brush and sometimes I use it if I need a lot of a really light color to get enough water on the palette. I stole it from my chemistry teacher last year and it is the only valuable thing he gave me considering I understood absolutely nothing in that class, besides the time he poured cold water on a hot piece of glass, making it shatter, and then blame me because the glass was from my experiment.
    Also my travel palette is a layered metal pencil tin, so I have my paint and mixing area on the top and everything else I need on the bottom.
    (Shameless self promo I made a video about it if anybody cares but I know no one does)

      that portable painter would not be for me, since I am the walking deffinition of a Cluts. I prefer my palette flat even my travel palette wich is ok; my sore legs prohibbit me from moving a lot,meaning I always have my palet nearby. I REALLY want a coffee table on my disabled scoot for this,grinnnn, (apologies I can see the face of town hall healthstaff when I ask that,lol,you want What?!) the awesome thing of the pentel brush, i have the same, is that IT DOES NOT LEAK. Halleluia. I tried a shitload of those brushes and the pentel one thus for is The Only one not leaking, It is heaven after getting my old makeup bag soaking wet from a leaking sakura koi brush a leaking dollar store brush and a leaking brandless brushset

    I think Grackles are hilarious too, I love their antics but most people I know give me a hard time for liking them because they think they are a nuisance or annoying. I don't care I get excited anytime I see one and they are pretty common where I live. I really love this video, and I LOVE that zebra! I have the larger bag with the sea turtle and I am now sorry I didn't get 2 bags. I usually only bring along sketching things, but now that I have my Altoid M Graham paints, I may start to bring them along. I really love my Koi waterbrushes, and have never had them leak. I have 3 other brands that I tried and don't like, but have not yet tried the Pentels. I may have to give them a try. I use waterbrushes in my Kirby Rosanes adult coloring books with my Inktense pencils. Very relaxing!

    Great overview ^.^ and here I was thinking maybe I got carried away with my own travel supplies.... :D I'm perfectly in the norm :D pentel Aquash are unbeatable and great idea with socks :) I'm using small thin microfiber washcloth with Velcro in similar way :) feels like it can handle more liquid and dries faster than the sock :) I included some ink brushpens too, sometimes love to add the thicker ink lines than I can achieve with just fineliner :)

      Btw Calamy why dont you have any content on your youtube? You seem to have such a great source of paint info, specially for newbe's like me. Would be nice to see you explaining your picks and why on the youtubes. I for one would certainly watch it :) If only to heavenly annoy you to pieces,grin.

      A .Vultink ah, haha... Thank you *profusely blushing* I'm very much newbie myself, although with way too much free time that I spent studying handprint and other awesome sources... :) just now barely getting into actual paintings, I'm still too much in the theory and color mixing at this point.
      But biggest reason is, I have serious speech problem, I keep repeating syllables to no end (stuttering is like nothing in comparison) and due to other, mental related issues my schedule would be far from regular... In comparison to Eve or Denise I would be like parody content :D
      But if I have something to say or share, there's always opportunity to do so ^.^ I'm glad my still very incomplete knowledge helps to at least one person though :)
      Thank you (hug) I very much appreciate your kind words (hug)

    • @AafkeVultink

      Well then dont speak. Just edit in music and work with text. Like subs or something, I know more artists who do that. Me I am only at pro paints for 2 years now so it is like alice in wonderland for me when it comes to mixing and researching on what paper takes what better for the paints I use. I hope to start youtube somewhere this year and I promiss you: I am nowhere near as good as denise or eve; but I like to stay small max size is 8 by 10 inch lol

    • @calamityjitt667
      @calamityjitt667 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A .Vultink paper towels have their use still, even with cloth for brush blotting. Nothing sucks the paint off the paper like paper tissue/towel :) and they can always be recycled in fireplace still :)

    I'm glad you showed the metal 24 pan fitting in. Have you found a good way to protect the tips of traditional brushes without bulk? I hate using the plastic things as they break, get lost etc. I'm getting a size 10 escoda travel, but have so many nice brushes I want to carry.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's such a tricky one, to be completely honest, I've just resorted to using my waterbrushes 95% of the time when I travel. I've gotten SO much more comfortable with them and just find traditional brushes too much of a risk while traveling. If you do want bring them, you could either buy or make a brush roll up type of thing like this but it is bulky: www.etsy.com/search?q=brush%20rill%20up

    I’ve volunteered as a foster at our local wildlife rescue, and have had the privilege of raising some orphaned/injured animals to release back into the wild. The baby grackles are hysterical. When they want to eat, they want to eat! And they’re much more aggressive about it than other species I’ve reared. Example: I’ve had to pull a protesting sibling’s foot and leg out of a baby grackle’s mouth: Sibling 1 tries to climb up highest surface to be the one to get the food the “parent” me is bringing. In this case, the highest surface is Sibling 2’s head. Meanwhile, Sibling 2 is gaping wide too, and grabs onto the first thing that approaches its mouth. In this case, Sibling 1’s foot. They can be gently detangled. But then next feeding, they will do it again!

    Ohhhh the zebra is awesome!!! Love to see your sketchbook and all your supplies for traveling!
    2 questions, hope you dont mind me asking! Do you know if there is a big difference between the schminke horadam and the acedemi line? Acedemi is student and the horadam is proff, but as a beginner watercolor user, would I know/ see/ feel the difference?
    How do I come up with ideas for sketching and more inportantly; how do i get over the feeling that my work isnt good/ fun/ interesting/ etc enough? Might be a bit to hard to answer?
    Again, great video!!! So glad i found you on TH-cam!!! Xxx

    When I use watercolors I always get really harsh border lines in every color that I apply even if I try to blend and I don't know if it's my fault, the paints fault or the paper's. And If I try to blend once a little dry it lifts of or mixes too much with the other colors

      Loati those are usually caused by using a lot of water and very little pigment on cellulose paper.

    I love the zippered pouches and I would love to do some with my own artwork. Would you consider sharing your process of uploading images, which company makes them, pros and cons etc? Thank you for the inspiration!

    I couldn’t find the grizzly pencil pouch on your Etsy store, do you still sell the grizzly pencil pouch?

      He's sold out right now Joseph! But I'll reorder him when I can. In the mean time, I could put it up on RedBubble if you like?

    I totally understand your stance on trophy hunting and wanting to avoid the culture surrounding that. But I do want to reassure you that most hunters I have encountered living in Texas the past 10+ years, eat the meat they hunt. In fact, I don't think I know any hunters who don't eat the meat they hunt. Your art is beautiful, and your video is really well made. I hope you have a good day!

    Your Sketchbook sure holds some masterpieces! Wowsers! And with your big 'lol hand shadow impeding on your light makes it all that more impressive. I still don't like water brushes so what I pack a cleaned out Pringles can to store my regular brushes and they just go on the road with me. It's all very high class. 🤗
