  • Following on from the last clip where the engine was heard running before being shown with the timing side partially stripped, we can see a little more clearly what had been going on now the engine has been removed and stripped further.

    Excellent video as usual Paul, can I ask you a favour though please ? Any chance of getting some strong lighting on the subject area when videoing ? It's all a bit dark sometimes 😌 apart from my little gripe keep up the brilliant work 👍👍

    it was evident the bike was brought to you for a good reason paul!
    can`t understand who would take you to task over the damage
    already done? stable door /horse bolted ?,those who can...do! 😇👍

    Thanks for the rubber hose tip Paul. Watching this one & taking notes. I've run into the time gear noise before. Worn Idler bush was the answer. Made a dreadful rattle.

    Great explanation, The engine was not as fresh as the new owner was expecting.

      Seems to be a trend that one!

    hi Paul i think the engine was caught just in time when the plain timing side bearing wear out the left hand rod gets staved of oil as you know. and what i do to get rid of the end play if its got a roller bearing on the drive side i replace it with a ball bearing coz when the ball bearing is shrunk fit in the case it holds the crank in place, when the rotor is nip up on the crank coz the ball bearing as very little side to side movement the running tolerance is built into the ball bearing and does away the shimming, the bearing i use is a, c3 bearing anyway Paul it'll be mint after you've had ya hands on it as always. and i must say you do a first class job on all the bikes you do and i like how you tell it how is. great vids, as always Paul with kind regards Adrian

    Soon it will be good as new. Thanks Paul.

    Exactly what I suspected. To add insult to injury a person installing a new oil pump didn't tighten a crank pinion properly. As expensive as the SRM pump is it's still cheaper than full engine rebuild, so he decided to pass this cost to the next owner. I'm also quite sure exhaust valves are done for and together with loose pistons / rings are a cause of very low compression of this engine.

    Oh dear, he's been sold a pup hasn't he.

    I don't understand why anyone would strip an engine far enough to fit the oil pump, without stripping it far enough to fit a new timing side bush?

      @paulhenshaw4514  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There would be a big difference in time and expense, , my guess is someone wanted it off their hands rather sharpish.

    Interesting, I wonder why they didn't fit a roller bearing on the timing side like Triumphs, it seems to be a commonish problem

    • @wayneroberts4144
      @wayneroberts4144 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wasn't a problem at all if you changed the engine oil regularly as called for in the owners manual. Neglecting this.........now that was the problem.......but in answer to your question just a difference in engineering design between the two makes really..........of course if your sloppy on routine maintenance and oil changes then the Triumph design proved better.

      Quite a few Triumphs had the bush - not all had journal bearings.

      @@wayneroberts4144 i agree regular oil changes and them plain bearing where good for 30 thousand mile, i change the oil on mine every 500/ to a thousand mile its cheaper than changing the oil than change the plain bearing or the big ends

      @@a65builder67 Yes owners just don't understand how important a full oil tank is with clean fresh oil of the proper grade is for these engines especially with only wire gauze filter screens. Lubrication and cooling is the key to engine life.

      My 71 thunderbolt did 40 thousand miles on the timing side bush with a remote oil filter and regular oil changes. Doubtless others have done more.

    Are there are other signs of substantial mileage to on the bike to negate the claim of "restored".

    Do you generally put the little ciclips back on the cam followers Paul, or leave them off. 🤔

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never had call to remove any, but a good few of these engines I have stripped haven't had any - hence my using the short lengths of hose, just in case.

  • @dog8nut
    @dog8nut ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With that much play in the timing side bush it would have been not much longer before the drive side con rod made a exit hole in the case,in my experance !
