  • In this video I backup a set of doubles to the dock... because I didn't want to break up the set and then pick up that trailer by itself and put it up to the dock, call me lazy it's okay I call it skills put to work.

      OD is one of the best companies to work for in the country, I work for a competitor we are very well taken care of, and no this doesn't ever have to be done you just unhook the tail trailer from the dolly, drop your lead out of the way and back the tail in as a single, then hook back up to your lead. that being said this takes stupid levels of skill to do and im really impressed

Don't you know this TOW man from Mike's Towing Backed that bad boy tractor and trailer on the meat hook Backed into my yard Nice , I couldn't believe it !!! You know as a Trucker I thought about that shit for years after . Then it hit me 🤔🤔🤔if that guy could back in my Tractor and trailer on the tow hook 🪝 then it must be possible to back in a Double , and I typed it in and Taadaa There you are With your Awesome Skills showing me how Possible it is Mannnnn , You the Mann !! In my 20+ years of driving LTL, I can count on one hand (& not using all of my fingers) the number of drivers I've actually seen backing up doubles successfully into a dock door. Like someone said earlier, most companies have went off-the-rails on their "safety training" & will reprimand drivers, up to & including termination. I've tried it when I thought management wasn't watching & it only makes me respect those who can a little bit more.

      Most LTL that I have worked at or seen, the yard hostler can back doubles to the dock. They also can back a pup with dolly under the 2nd pup. Seems like a company would be happy a driver can do this.

Safety is the big one. what you did is more safe then unhooking. This is because the truck is doing all the physical work and not the driver. By that I mean all the hooking and unhooking of trailer to move them into spot. Great Job, and thanks for show me this can be done. I doubt it was this easy with only 4 pullups. There is a definite distinction between “laziness” and efficiency.
    Usually if “your way” requires supreme skill…. It’s efficiency.
    If you’re doing more work, as a way to “side step” the skill requirement…. Sure, no one can really call you “lazy”.
    But that doesn’t necessarily mean we can call you “efficient” either.
    If a driver can save work, and shave steps…. Simply by honing his skills to the next level…. I call that good driving, and smart to boot.

    I sometimes drive doubles hauling macadamia nuts. Crazy difficult just to back straight. Main thing you have to watch is the front dollies. Control the front dolly and you control the direction of the swing of the rear of the first trailer. Then use the rear of the first trailer to push the dolly on the second trailer. Hard concept to grasp, I still have much to learn myself

  • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
    @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It would be interesting to do a timed test of this vs the method where the driver unhooks and only backs the single trailer into the dock to see how much time it might save (if someone is proficient doing this).
    SCENARIO: Your starting condition is with a double trailer coming into the gate at the yard and your ending condition is to be at the same point, facing the opposite direction with just a single trailer hooked to the tractor.
    TEST#1: You maneuver the double trailer to a particular dock, unhook it, and then take the single trailer that is still hooked to the tractor to the exit point.
    TEST#2: You maneuver the double trailer to an intermediate point, unhook from the rear trailer, move forward to another intermediate point, and unhook from the front trailer, and then go back to what was the rear trailer, hook up to it, and take it to the dock. You then go back to the previous front trailer and take it to the exit point.
    I'm surprised that no one has developed some sort of yard vehicle with the 5th wheel in the front and with a 5th wheel that can be hydraulically raised so that the trailer legs do not need to be raised when moving the trailer. Sitting that close to the front of the trailer though would probably give the driver a pretty large blind spot, so he would either need some cameras that stuck well off the sides, double mirrors, or some such thing like that. Ideally, an OTR driver would just pull into the lot, unhook from his trailer(s) and then continue on his way, never having to reverse and someone else being responsible for moving the trailer to the dock or wherever it needed to be.

    I ran line haul for Fed Ex for 5 years, was told from the get go. You ever back doubles into a dock and you'll be fired on the spot. Nice video for you tube though.

    • @rollUPfilm

      Did you work for FedEX or a subcontractor who had a contract with FedEx? I think they just don’t want you to do it because of liability reasons .. like not wanting you to hit anything because people in the past have had accidents

    I thought about designing a towing pintle that slides side to side on the frame of the trailer for situations like this. It would be operated by an air ram or an electric motor on a rack and pinion. It would allow you to have more control on that second trailer without having to make the tractor make massive turns to keep it straight. It would be

    I used to work the yard at YRC that dolly is the most aggravating thing on earth even if you back up straight without turning the wheel it’ll jackknife, it takes a lot of patience backing doubles

    • @Bendigo1
      @Bendigo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to tell the dolly where to go. If you wait for it to go where it wants its too late to correct it. Its much easier with a short tractor too i did it with a twin screw day cab. Took forever to learn it.

    You sir, are an awesome driver... just pulling a pair of "rocky mountain doubles" can be nerve wracking, especially in high wind situations... but backing them?
    I tried backing a pair of doubles in a simulator once, and the damn thing ended up looking like a derailed train... so, yeah, much respect to ya bruh...

    Good job. If I may comment here though, I think you're over steering and trying to do it too quick. It is not easy to do. It is not lazy. You should always use as much space as you can. You got it done and only those who've never done it will judge harshly. 😊
