If you really want to go the extra mile pre-treat the carpet with a liberal application of a surfactant solution with a pump sprayer - really saturate it and work it really well from various angles with a new push broom then let it soak a while. There'll be more liquid for the carpet cleaner to pick up but it results in a more thorough cleaning. Do a section at a time.
do you recommend surfactant solution?
@@carlhammill5774 The recipe below makes a gal of concentrate. Put 1/2 cup of the concentrate in a 1 gal pump sprayer and fill with water. I leave out the fabric softener. It's the same solution I use in my carpet cleaner. It's a fraction of the cost of store-bought carpet cleaning solution and works at least as well.
2 Tbsp liquid Tide laundry detergent
1/4 cup LA's Totally Awesome cleaner
3 tbsp Oxiclean
1 teaspoon Downy fabric softener optional
1 gallon hot water
Thank you Kelly for this video. I was getting frustrated looking at other videos. You explained everything clearly and used reasonable products. And you gave steps that are very easy.
What a good vidio.
Ok, the obvious question; y not use the hot water & vinegar & oxy 2gether all the time? Wouldn't that cut down on the number of times one would need 2 push/pull that heavy machine over the carpet?
I use hot water and vinegar to clean carpet for routine cleaning. I use hot water and oxyClean when carpet is very dirty and there are obvious stains.
@@kellyready3773 Thank u.
Don't mix them please. Oxyclean is an alkaline. Vinegar is an acid.
The vinegar will weaken then oxycleans cleaning power. Basically making an expensive, ineffective cleaning solution and leaving more residue behind to clean.
What is the carpet cleaner machine brand? Could you say the brand and the model please?
Hoover. I purchased it from Walmart
I have one just like it, a Hoover, does a great job !!
It's a Hoover Power Scrub.

Sorry, but rentals should be cleaned by professiinal carpet cleaners . They do steam cleaning etc. which is far more hygenic.
She's better than professional cleaners and vinegar kills bacteria.
i don’t like how as the tenant i have to pay for the full thorough cleaning after moving out
Go buy a house for say $300,000.Then I guarantee you your tone will change after you have to pay for some else's mess.
@@paulputin3018 i get your point, that’s why i try to keep it as clean as possible. Even so, i would rather do it DIY than pay someone else, especially if you’re a short term renter
You dont like paying for your own mess to be cleaned up!?
@@chrismccaffrey8256 carpets don’t get as dirty if you don’t wear shoes in the house:)
@@thaddeontan it Need to be at a professional standard .. not ur standard.. that’s why when you move to a new place u find it professionally cleaned
Buy a Kirby
I have one and it sucks lol the vacuum is great but not the shampoo part
@@itskate2991Me too. The shampoo attachment is great for light soiling and dries quickly (If you don't go mad..) but some of the shampoo stays in the carpet after vacuuming up, meaning marks show up again quicker.
What I have noticed is, on really dirty carpets, if I Kirby it first, then use my Big Green, the water runs clean a lot faster.
@@alfsmith4936please finish with a water shampoo to take out all the soap residue so the carpet will stay a lot cleaner and lot longer. I spot clean stains 1st with a spray bottle of solution for what I am treating. Always do a final fresh water rinse and then finish with just suction (no liquid )to pull the max amount of water out of the carpet
Awesome tips. I have an older house that's nearly 100% carpet that has been christened numerous times with small dog and cat pee along with just lots and lots of shoes that have been out in the yard and flower gardens. I will let the next owner pull up all the carpet and put down vinyl planking or even new carpet because I am a 71 year old widow who just is too tired, (and too poor!), to replace these old carpets! But, I do want to really refresh them and get out all the little stains and old dirt that I can. I have found out in my small shampoo machine that hot water and vinegar is a good thing but I will also be testing out that oxyclean. Then the big shampoo machine will get fired up. I also have a rainbow vacuum as well as a bagless and that rainbow does a really great job of sucking out the dirt but it takes several, several times of going over the carpet to ever quit filling the water container with anything but very dirty and disgusting water! I have my work cut out for me but your video has given me hope!! Thank you!
I make my own carpet shampoo with a little bit of liquid laundry detergent, Dollar Tree degreaser, oxygen bleach powder, and hot water. It works quite well, but the most important part is to follow up with a thorough rinse with vinegar and water to remove any soap residue. My carpet is a little more than 20 years old and still looks brand new, even in high traffic zones.
Where can I get oxil clean
@@NomsaGumbi-d7f I buy Kroger brand oxygen bleach powder, but Dollar Tree sells it, too.
Omds thank you so much for sharing!! I'll try this, God bless you!
@@NomsaGumbi-d7f Grocery store detergent aisle. Walmart & Target also have it.
I've had good luck with just using the hottest water and vinegar
I'm glad you are do it yourself. Professional carpet cleaners should vacuum first. At least we do. You are right that the key is to remove dry soil. Homeowners vacuum fast but they should vacuum 4 times at least from north to south, south to north, west to east and then east to west. Great video. I'm glad to emphasis in vacuuming. You express well in your video and I'm happy that you are helping homeowners
If you fill it up ⅔ with water then add the vinegar your ration is 2 to 1, that is, ⅔ to ⅓. NOT 3 to 1 !! That would be ¾ full with hot water to ¼ vinegar
She said she doesn’t measure
Terrible advice. Spray solution on with a separate sprayer, leave it rest for 5/10mins. Agitate with a brush and then rinse with an extractor with clean hot water. No chemicals or vinegar
Vinegar and water works very well. I use vinegar and water first and then go back over the carpet with shampoo solution. Once I’m finished, I clean all the parts and tanks in dawn dish soap, vinegar and hot water.
Well I am the lucky one. No stains but matted traffic patterns. Thank you so much for the tips. I use Hoover brand on my Hoover machine or resolve, rinses clean.
Ive found tenants often throw dirty clothes on the carpet, which collects the odors of worn clothes... ew.
Thus, carpets require cleaning.
Never rely on amateur carpet cleaner or a wannabe! I would like to see the ph test after your done😂🤣
Gross. What state do you live in where you're not required to have the carpets cleaned between each tenant?
Fabulous video!!! Where’s your affiliate links so I can reward you?!?! TH-cam is so chucky jam full of junk videos that this one is a total breath of fresh air. I will save save save this one. ❤
So ... basically "hey I don't measure but I mix this and that and hope for the best" AT YOUR OWN RISK without a SINGLE photo of before and after
3pt water to 1pt vinegar wasn’t clear enough for you?
Any advice on stairs ? A real problem for me
Thanks for reminding that one is on the right track! Saving $ is my model!👍
You are a beaut Kelly, I have all the things needed for this deep cleaning. Thank you for video.
You have learned a little more about carpet cleaning and saving money!!
Thank youuu! Just what i was looking for!
Thank you for this video Kelly Ready37. I'm a new subscriber who really appreciates how well you explained the entire process. I will be watching all your videos for other great ideas. [ETA: Looks like you have a very diverse and interesting channel!]
To much talking 😔
Carpet cleanings are not righteous. The vacuuming is supposed to be part of their job. Even if the owner vacuums the floor, a carpet cleaner must vacuum everything to ensure quality but these folks are just too lazy and just want the easy way out while charging $300+ to spend less than 30 minutes in your house. This ain't normal.
Thank you so much for these tips on how to clean my carpet, I have been doing it wrong in trying to do it fast.
story of my life!
What about steam?
For badly stained carpets do you do the vinegar/hot water solution first then go over it with the Oxy Clean solution? And then do you do another pass with a vinegar/hot water solution as a final step? Thank you for help!
I do the oxy clean If badly stained. I use the vinegar and water if not so bad
If carpet cleaning extraction works, why are rugs removed for cleaning.
Carpets cause illness, and should be illegal.
Don't know if I'd risk hot water or oxyclean on my wool carpets. Has any one tried it?
Yeah, be careful with the water being too hot, like a wool garment you can literally shrink the fibres. Hand hot is OK. I would rather do two cleans over a couple of days with warm than risk shrinking... Use the Oxi but dissolve it well in a bowl or something *before putting in the tank (use a bit of boiling first then top up when in the tank with hand hot) My plain beige wool in the lounge (only place I have carpet because it looks cosier I feel) is almost twenty years old & looks fine!! When you have finished & the carpet is clean & properly dry, treat the tread pattern & round the doorways with some Scotch guard.. A thin coat then another a few hours later, Good luck!
@emmsue1053 Thanks for the advice I'lltake it on board, but my machine has broken now. 😢 looks like I'm off to the shops😒
Hot water in some carpet shampooeers deformed the tanks.
Thank you I need to vacuum first
Yes…vacuum and vacuum and vacuum first 👍
Thank you, I do use Oxy but am going to try the vinegar as a second clean!
Do you recommend your carpet cleaning method on wool carpets. I am particularly concerned how your method affects the drying of the wool carpet completely. Thank you
Some of my properties had carpet when they were purchased. I have know way of knowing the fabric content so l typically test a small area in a non conspicuous area first before cleaning the entire room. Always be careful to prevent damage.
This is a great video very helpful tips
Thanks for the tip👌
I'm a 40 yr veteran professional forensic cleaner my advice is hire a pro we constantly fix people who have done there own carpet cleaning
Not everyone can afford a forensic cleaner. Are you serious!? As a professional forensic internet explorer I recommend you learn as much as you can and do it your damn self!! Save them pennies for vacations and making memories ❤
Is it pet safe?
Get to the point bruh

Do you need need to rinse the vinegar out of the carpet?
I usually don’t. You can if you like. Be careful not to over wet/soak the carpet. You want it to dry quickly.
