  • VIDEO: An hour and a bit on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Paisley Gilmour Street station, located at the junction for the Ayrshire Coast Line and Inverclyde Line.
Paisley Gilmour Street station was first opened in 1840 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr (GPK&A) Railway. The following year, a branch to Greenock (and later Wemyss Bay and Gourock) was opened by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock (GP&G) Railway.
Initially, the station was built with only two tracks and two platforms but, in 1880, this was doubled to four tracks and four platforms; two for each respective branch.
The line through Platforms 1 and 2 were electrified in 1967, as part of the Inverclyde Line electrification. This was followed by the lines through Platforms 3 and 4 with the Ayrshire Coast electrification in 1986.
In 1979, the station was the site of a horrific accident when a diesel train from Ayr left the station at a red signal and collided with an Wemyss Bay-bound electric train as it was approaching the station. The crash resulted in seven deaths and 68 injuries and led to a change in safety regulations, in where a guard can only signal to the driver to start moving the train if the signal is clear.
Between 2011 and 2012, the station canopies, dating back to the 1970s, were replaced by a full glass roof over the whole station, giving the station an overall brighter appearance.
