I loved what you said about Vanessa wanting to 'skip a stage' of her life by going away to school, and that mentality therefore making her vulnerable to someone like Strane, who sort of gave her the opportunity to participate in things kids aren't supposed to. really really insightful!

I just finished My Dark Vanessa and are grappling with it. It is a tough read and gives significant insight to how a predator selects victims and brainwashes them to believe they are special and loved. Highly recommended.

I loved it (as much as you can love a book about that subject matter). It messes with my mind in the best way. I loved how it played with themes of consent and how, as you pointed out, Vanessa begins to unpack everything to do with her relationship with Strane as an adult, which makes her realize that it was not so idealistic. Brilliant.

This sounds really interesting, it reminds me a lot of a film called The Tale by Jennifer Fox, which is basically a slightly fictionalised account of Jennifer Fox's first "relationship" (as she thinks of it at the time) when she's I think maybe 13 with a man in his 20s or 30s, and it's similar in that she doesn't see what's happened to her as grooming or rape until she's much much older, at which point she looks back on what happened to her and realises how young she was and while she thought she was very mature for her age, she was absolutely a child. This a really interesting film, so well made, obviously again there's lots of trigger warnings and I had to skip bits because it was too hard to watch, but it's well worth watching for anyone who thinks they can handle it :)

I might have to give that one a watch (but in a little while I think) x

I'm very interested to read this when it comes out, even though I'm trying not to buy as many books since my tbr has grown to ridiculous numbers.

I adored this book! I haven’t been able to review it yet, but it’s coming. I would check out these violent delights. It’s a similar story but mpov.

Fantastic review and I'm definitely interested in reading it now - it sounds like it's touching on the whole idea of narrative as well; which is always something I find interesting.

Eww that Unwanted Advances book sounds like majorly abuse apologia. Very “I’m not like other girls” “I’m not narrow minded” “I’m a cool girl” pick me energy.
