Amid Manila’s dispute with Beijing over the South China Sea, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India firmly supports the Philippines in upholding its national sovereignty. China and the Philippines have clashed violently in the South China Sea to control certain territories. Jaishankar's comment sparked the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs response, which called on “third countries” not to “interfere”. India's bold response is one of its kind in recent times. Apart from the current controversy, Beijing is watching India’s sale of Brahmos missiles to the Philippines very closely, deliveries for which are expected to begin shortly.
