    I always wished I could turn parts on my mill but alas, it's only a two axis CNC. Then I realized, just turn the head! (and make something tall to hold the tools)

    There are numerous R8 faceplates which accommodate 3 to 6 inch chucks. Clamping the cutter in your vise gives lathe abilities. People have used this in a pinch for decades.

    When I subscribed to you years ago due to your crazy Portal laser logo/music videos, I never imagined you'd go on to make stuff like this, which particularly interests me as I'm about to graduate Engineering.
    Nothing is more satisfying than just buttering away rusty metal and getting that amazing shiny surface.

    Beautiful. Now if you can make a follow rest so you can keep the end of a longer bar steady (acts like a Swiss lathe), and add the cutoff tool on a separate holder from the back, you can make a whole row of pieces from a bar without stopping.

    Oh gawd, that took balls to cut the top of that square using that cutter running on the X axis parallel to the jaw faces while it was standing tall in the vice. I would have chickened out and used an angle plate or at the very least used a Y axis cut.

    Yes, you can use a tailstock, by modifying an X/Y/Z table (aliexpress or something) to accept a lathe toolholder, and mount on it's side onto the mill table.
    That way you'll be free to install a tilt-able worm-gear tailstock.

    How in the hell you use a multiflute countersink to cut without chattering is beyond me. I won't judge you for not having those tools, but I will judge you for not having a knee drill driver adapter. You've got a lathe now, no excuses. ;)

  • @Spirit532
    @Spirit532 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video!
    Have you ever thought of adding a third axis to the machine?
    If the steel turns black, it means it's getting REALLY hot.
    If you want a tailstock - just use the other side of the tool holder! Put a chuck there, you've got an insane travel anyway.

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I was going to say! Just put a Morse taper quick change tool holder on the other side of the tool post. Sweet! Also you have a VFD on the spindle motor, don't you? I mean you do power tapping, right? So I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to calibrate it to handle threading. Like faster and easier threading setup than most any QCGB leadscrew lathe.

    • @ChrisDePrisco
      @ChrisDePrisco  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Spirit Thanks! I haven't thought about it, really. I need to get the mini VMC project finished up and then this mill will be manual use (maybe 2D CAM) only.
      I don't follow in the tailstock idea...

    • @ChrisDePrisco
      @ChrisDePrisco  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jon Miller Let me think... I suppose I could set up the CAM for threading and get the spindle RPM from there. Then I'd need to get a tachometer for the spindle and manually adjust the speed until it matched what was in the CAM. Hmm.. I'll give that some more thought. Sounds like it could be done - I just meant the machine couldn't handle threading by itself.

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense. I actually find this idea rather exciting. I have room in my tiny shop for a mill or a lathe. I've looked at the Smithys and others like those but it's such a compromise. Your setup has the potential for a compromise worth making, at least to me.

    • @Spirit532
      @Spirit532 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris DePrisco You can either put the chuck(for the "tailstock") inside the block and move the knee up when you want to do the work(make the chuck removable), or just mount it on the opposite side of where the tool points, so that you can move forward in the Y axis and switch to the chuck/collet.

  • @ipadize
    @ipadize 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2 dowels and one screw is not enough to get an accurate positioning, use 2 dowels on one side and the other dowel on the other side and you have a good defined position

  • @patrickfarley8036
    @patrickfarley8036 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man that was cool! I often thought about making a "Smithy" out of my old Bridgeport cause I haven't the space for a lathe.
    I always envied my dad having a ShopSmith for his woodworking projects and wished I had the same for metal work.
    I know there are 3 in 1's like the Smithy for we chip makers, but I'm not making watches or doll houses.
    What you've done would certainly get me through the kinds of things I usually run into, heavier work for hot rods and motorcycles etc.
    Excellent work, mate! About how long did that project take?
    Thanks for sharing that video with us!
    Peace.

    No need to control spindle speed
    You can mount optical sensor to spindle to read RPM from it, and use that signal for threading (at least LinuxCNC can adjust axis speed with readings from spindle)

    • @ChrisDePrisco
      @ChrisDePrisco  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting... I don't think the Anilam controller will do that but that's neat to hear. I bought a tachometer for the spindle which I still need to install, then I can hopefully manually dial in the speed I set up in the CAM.

I am curious if maybe you might be able to cast anouther upper portion of the tailstock with info provided.
