RESCUE HORSE with LOW BACK PAIN gets GENTLY ADJUSTED by CHIROPRACTOR!

  • Amigo is an 18 year old draft-cross (breed) that Christine personally adopted after she rescued him herself from slaughter. Christine is the founder of Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue in Mt. Airy, Maryland. Amigo has a tender lower back and Dr. Doug Willen, The Animal Cracker, gives Amigo a gentle thorough chiropractic adjustment.
    Breed Description
    Draft crosses come in many sizes, colors, and configurations. A cross is generally the progeny of any draft breed mare, such as a Blegian or Percheron, bred with a light breed stud, such as a Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse. The crosses are generally lighter boned and more spirited than the pure draft, and are often used for riding, jumping, dressage, and "light" harness work, such as showing and eventing.
    Romance (and history) have it that all of our draft breeds descended from the age of knights in armor. They needed heavy, powerful mounts and the Great Horse of Flanders (a common ancestor to several breeds) provided the genetic material. The knights, encased in heavy armor on horseback, became the tanks of their time. They were later rendered obsolete by gunpowder, another element of the industrial revolution.
    Be it for whatever reason - public appeal, versatility, practicality or economy - what was once regarded as an artifact of history has today become a tool of choice for many. The breed registries in this country confirm that it is growing. Any genome that has survived first gunpowder and then industrialization, can survive darn near anything. And survive is what the draft horse industry has done.

    Gentle Friends: gentlefriends....
    Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
    The Primary Function of the Rescue
    GGDHR promotes the benefits and uses of Draft horses of all breeds as trail mounts, schooling mounts, and competition mounts. We educate the public through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of: horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry. Learn more about our educational outreach here.
    Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. We attend the same public auctions, choose the Draft horses we feel are the most viable candidates for rescue, and then outbid the meat buyer.
    We transport the horses to our facility, where the horses are quarantined for a minimum of 21 days for illness. During that time, we begin to evaluate each individual horse and learn its personality and training level on the ground and under saddle. We ride the horses under many different circumstances, and evaluate for what level of rider the horse would best be suited. During this time, the horse also receives any necessary veterinary care, farrier care, dental care, and training.
    When the horses have completed their quarantine, they are available to be placed into adoptive homes under a strict contract. The horses are advertised on our website and on the internet to help find suitable adoptive homes. Each horse is evaluated with its prospective adopter, and if we feel the horse and rider are a suitable match for one another, then the adopter may apply to adopt that horse. At that time, GGDHR would perform a background and reference check, and may at times also conduct home visits, if deemed necessary.
    GGDHR is primarily funded by adoption fees, private donations, and sponsorships which facilitate the rescue of future draft horses from slaughter.

      Thanks Megan, I appreciate the comment. I know that I rush sometimes, It's hard when you have 143 horses and the most I can do is 2 per hour. I only got to about 20 on this visit. But I also feel a sense of "get going, get going" because I need to spread some love to as many horses as possible. I don't charge when I go to a rescue farm.

    I’m so happy that you decided to continue your education to help these beautiful animals, large and small. Growing up we had horses and never thought that they might be in pain. My dads dad raised draft horses here in Minnesota and was told he loved and treated his horses better than his wife and 13 kids. His horses were sought after. We have a few animal chiropractors here in MN.

      @NarielleD5388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a little confused about this. Isn't Christine saying that she notices the sore back when the horse is cantering? If so, then the word "canter" would be correct, but I admit I don't know very much about horses and am here trying to learn more. If someone can explain that would be great!

    • @AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen
      @AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NarielleD5388 The word Canter is the verb. The Gerund form, Cantering is used commonly in colloquial speech. But you are correct in thinking it doesn't need the "ing" form to express "Canter" as a verb. However, that being said, you will hear it a lot.
      I think you will hardly ever hear (cantering) in the UK for example. " In the UK, it would be simply... "The horses set off at a canter" The phrase "the horse is cantering" is not grammatically correc or necessary, but it is a common colloquial phrase here in the states.

    • @NarielleD5388
      @NarielleD5388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen ok, so then the word should be "canter" and not "canner"?

    I always wonder why there is a difference between a horse killed for food for a person overseas is worse than for an animal to eat. To me, both reasons are equal, and making money off a pet you no longer want but don't want to give a second chance at life in the care of someone willing to take the burden of rehabilitation on.

    When you worked on his atlas at 4:18 you said he was chewing and that was a good thing. Is that similar to a dog when it shakes itself off after being adjusted? The breed description and info on this big beauty made this video quite informative as well as interesting. Adios Amigo.

    • @AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen
      @AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, my teachers, who are Vets, told me that the licking and chewing on the horse, and the shaking with the dog is pretty much the same. It is the animal showing an acceptance or integration of the work.

      Usually horses do that when releasing anxiety/stress. A reset. You will see it when something “scary” happened but they didn’t die.
      Some people believe they are processing something they just learned.

    It's natural instinct for horses not to like things high up, because predators used to attack from above. These horses are very accepting but you need to keep the natural instincts in mind. They've been through enough.
