The song that plays when Emily "comes out" to Viny is amazing! I looked it up, and it's called "This Tiny Bed", by Drum & Lace and Ian Hultquist. By the title, it's safe to assume it's EmiSue's theme.
Obviously there are a lot of parallels between Sylvia and Emily in the ‘morbid young woman poet’ space, but the conversation between her and the Dickinson's goes through some very interesting places. Emily starts the episode by talking about being born in the wrong century, but by the episode’s end she understands (thanks to Vinnie’s advice) that she has everything she needs in the present. I particularly liked how Vinnie was joyfully freaking out at the mention of Emily as a great American poet, although Sylvia makes things more depressing by quoting her poem ‘Mad Girl’s Love Song’ and telling the two sisters that the future never comes for women. Yet there are also useful notes here, as Emily finally admits to Vinnie about her love of Sue - and Vinnie seems to accept it. Although once she’s back in the past, Vinnie now tells her that Emily simply spaced out for a minute. But naturally with this show, both things are true, as Emily certainly had no way of knowing who Sylvia Plath is nor guessing about what a 1950’s airplane would look like. So once again, the magical realism serves as a method in the madness to help Emily realize that she needs to stop looking toward what might happen and acknowledge what she already has.
When I watched this episode my jaw dropped hard, Sylvia is one of my favorites writers and I often make connections with hers and Emily’s writings. I didn’t know she was gonna be in the show and the casting was spectacular it’s exactly how I imagined Sylvia to be.
This was such a great ep! Yet again lol feel like I can say that about every ep. As much as I loved the scene between Emily and Sue, I hate that they tainted their secret orchard spot with so much angst. Like that's their sacred space. The kiss in 1x01, the place the sneak off to in 1x10 before the wedding... Like how are you gonna take sacred ground and desecrate it like that lol But its def issues they've needed to talk about since the season started. All Sue truly wants is to finally have that tactile, in the now relationship, whereas for Emily their relationship is as fully realized as it is in her mind with her poems, not realizing Sue can't fully experience the dreamscapes as viscerally as Emily can. And jealous Sue will always be a fave, coz she does see it like she's being replaced and painfully so, by a man. The one thing she thought sacred to her and Emily again, is being shared with another man. And Sue is twinged with jealously. Ugh! The angst is so good but man... Not this late into the final season. I absolutely loved Emily and Vinnie's trip (which I always headcanon as them being high AF on Emily's weed. Like why have Mr. Dickinson randomly find it in this ep with an outlandish scenario as them going to the future, if they aren't lighting up themselves lol). Chloe Fineman as Sylvia Plath was just absolutely GENIUS casting, she was beyond fantastic and easily my fave "real person" to guest on the show. The way she helps Emily come out to Vinnie is both hysterical but poignant as well, because in essence she finally gives Emily the lexicon her time period was lacking. She finally verbalizes what Emily could never put into words as to the nature of who she is. It's also a testament to how close the sisters have grown, how deep their bond and trust has gotten, how comfortable Emily has become in her queerdom AND relationship with Sue that she feels safe enough to finally confide in Vinnie about everything. Vinnie does remember the convo (minus the time travel), Emily does tell her but from the safety of her dreamscape and I think it was beautifully taken by Vinnie. She always knew. They all did. But now even she has the lexicon to describe and understand what it actually all means.
Love the Dickson reactions! I just looked on your page and was surprised to find you haven’t reacted to The Wilds! It’s a show you would LOVE so I highly recommend! 💜
It's actually wasn't meant to be a lesson to Emily. Even by loving Sue and sharing a life with her ppl in the 50's still speculate that Emily dickinson was a depressed young woman. It was only later on that historical ppl investigate her personality and finding out what we know today.
Love love love your reactions! And as we all know you like a good horror show you have to watch stranger things!! Season 4 is insane😍 and since season 3 we have our gay queen robin❤️🏳️🌈
This episode was great, BUT, I really wish instead of her and Vinnie in the 50’s that it was rather Emily and Sue travel to 2020 where gay marriage is legal and they get married 🤗
"no, she was an american" one of the most iconic lines
This is not a wake up call, it’s literally how Emily Dickinson has always been remembered. And Lavinia for real kept the poems and saved them.
The sentence “the future never comes for women” is truly genius writing. Absolutely incredibile writing. Which is the truth
“The lesbian tree”😂😂😂
Adam you’re the best!!!!
Silvia Plath - very significant - she was a famous novelist, poet, writer!!! 🎉🎉🎉
The way it cuts from Emily & Sue fighting to Vinnie crying was ME.
Also, with the way the garbage world is, these have made my day, so THANK YOU.
The argument between Sue and Emily in this episode my goodness! And they look so gooood! Like ethereal almost.
