  • From www.swimmingpo... - When you have a large swimming pool (like a 20x40') and it has a large volume of water and small plumbing (like 1.5" or even 2" pipes) it can be expensive to meet your filtration goals due to the inefficiency of moving water quickly through small plumbing lines. In this video you will learn how you can save money with a variable speed pump and a large swimming pool.

Very good video. we get the point but just a friendly suggestion:
imho you should've kept the throughput the same as the 3450 rpm scenario otherwise it wouldn't be a fair comparison. some people will be like "what if i just run it at full speed for a shorter time?" by keep the same turnover rate as scenario one, you actually have to run the pump 1.27 times longer. so the actual cost is $939/year. Still lower than scenario 1 which is $1434/year but less impressive albeit more realistic.

Quick question Steve.... Not related to this topic. This summer it seems like liquid chlorine is "weaker" than past years. Seems like I have to put more and more frequent to maintain my levels. ( I have had a pool for the last 30 years, so not new) My question, have you heard anyone complain that chlorine companies are making liquid chlorine weaker? It doesn't look as dark as a remember? You know all companies these days are charging more and giving you less quantity and quality in every product. Thanks for all your videos and time.

i haven't heard of that but it is easy to test out. record your starting chlorine level, then add 88 fl oz of liquid chlorine to the pool, test chlorine after an hour. record the increase. wait another week for the chlorine level to drop. do the same chlorine increase test but this time with 16 oz of 73% cal hypo. if the chlorine difference of those two tests are exactly the same, you know you're getting 12.5% bleach. it is not weaker.

My pool /spa combination has a 2 hp. pump, we have replaced the motor twice in the last 10 years, but per regulations that anything over a 2 hp. we will be forced to buy a variable speed pump. My question is; will my raised spa properly cascade into the pool or will it just dribble over the spill area with those lower speeds? Thanks

This video is predicated on the idea that filter nearly all the water each day (95%) is desirable. Is there hard data somewhere that supports this?

"All" of your water every day is just a real world application for what you couldn also state as "more is better" when it comes to filtration.

Very interesting. Something to think about. This year with less chlorine tablets available my 30,000 gallon pool was a killer $$!! I put off salt every year but thinking about it again. Thanks for your video.

I left my Pentair VS at default and the power consumption was still high until i watched your videos and made some adjustments. Still haven’t added a flow meter so i’m sure i could dial it in further when i add one.

thanks steve.. was wondering if you could do a video on the usage of 1.5 or 2 inch plumbing in a system and how it can actually benefit.. or is it really just up to the pump size and speed of turn over?

Oh my gosh, pipe size means everything! If you have not yet, please read this article that explains the limitations of pipe size and flow www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/pipe-size.html

For a centrifugal pump power consumption varies by the speed ratio cubed

Thanks for all the great videos!!
I have a question and would appreciate your advice, I am having a 48"x25" free form gunite pool installed in 2 months I think the gallons are between 35-40k gallons. I'm getting a (Hayward hcf7030) what size plumbing should I have installed and what is the best VS Pump I should use? I was thinking 2-1/2" schedule 80 what do you think. Thank you!!
