I saw Dorothy in this show five or six times. It was one of my all time favorite theatrical experiences. Always wish they had let her do Mama Rose in GYPSY, she would have blown the roof off the theatre.

Absolutely sensational! The INCOMPARABLE Loudon in clover, doing what she did best! And that glorious 100% REAL, FULL orchestra! NO SYNTHS! Sheer bliss, all around....

I think the person who said that perhaps no one else could have done this song any better is so right! It is pure perfection. I love seeing Sondheim, Angela Lansbury and Kitty Carlyle all in a row at the end during the applause!

I was lucky enough to see it twice, (I lived in NYC and went to tkts alot) and I think this is the 79 Tony Show. The sob at 3:37 took my by surprise that night...I think the show had already closed, and everyone expected Lansbury to get the Tony, and she put everything into it. My eyes teared then, and they still do.
Thanks so very much for posting!!!

I would rather have 1% of MISS DOROTHY LOUDON than anybody else at all.

I love this woman. Her voice is so unique and unmistakeable. Looking at this clip, I don't know why, but I can't help being reminded of Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux. Knowing this womans brilliant comical performances, had McClanahan not played Blanche, Loudon would have I think made a wonderful second choice. Thanks so much for sharing.

This is the ULTIMATE Eleven O'Clock Number!
PS It was this performance that gave SS the idea to have DL replace Angie in ST the following spring.

This was such a wonderful show!! It had such a magical quality to it and the dancing was sublime. At a late supper after the show, we ran into one of the actresses and she said anecdotally that the older dancers were losing so much weight from the strenuous dance numbers that Michael Bennett was bringing in cakes to the shows for them to load up on calories. This was one of the times that the New York Times critic (Richard Eder) killed the show with his review.

Brings a tear to your eye. Absolutely wonderful! And did you see Stephen Sondheim in the audience applauding like mad? God, I wish I'd been there. Thanks a million for posting

My favourite Broadway song by my favourite Broadway performer - the indelible Dorothy Loudon.

Wonderful to see this. I'll never forget when a local theater had done this production. It was memorable.

I heard this tonight on XM On Broadway, had to see if there was a video performance, found this. Stunning!
THAT'S what brought me here too. She's only 46 years old her,e, but seems older. What a shame she died so young...

@dago942 Actually, it would say, "When Angie leaves Sweeney Todd, I just found my next Mrs. Lovett". Loudon took over the role when Lansbury left the cast.

This was from circa. June 1979 Tony Awards. I know I attended the awards that year. This is the first time I've seen this clip 'up close'.
Dottie was a gem! I also attended opening night of BALLROOM. It was a sad dissapointment. The party was at Windows of the World. I remember Lauren Bacall was there. And in a good mood, too!!

So funny..wasn't the sound just awful this year? What a shame, so few great live performances out there.
