You should add Julie London to your list of great female vocalist from that period. Her song "Cry Me A River" is the one that I think of the most. I think the musical instrument you wanted to know about was a trombone.
Peggy Lee was nominated for 13 Grammy Awards. In 1969, her hit "Is That All There Is?" won her the Grammy for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance. In 1995, she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Yeah I recently watched this scene from the movie. I liked it better than this version, but it had the advantage of being sung by many female characters and it's choreographed so well. Interesting that that movie is not that well known because it was a flop at the time, while I assume the stage version was a big success.
She also was a script rewrite expert. The original script had Trusty killed,Miss Peggy Lee would have none of it and insisted he was only injured ❤. A great talent.
I wish you could get permission from Disney to show "He's a Tramp" from that movie. You'd love it. You should get it on your movie reaction and bring in your kids to view it with you.
My father was a singer during this era, he recorded with Tommy Dorsey, Ralph Flanagan, Harry James and Stan Kenton. This is the music I was raised on. Loved this reaction. And, Amber, my father loved a band that could swing, especially when it had horns.
I primarily knew her from Lady and The Tramp as Peg.....man these classic big band songs are tight and still so good today....Peggy and Shirley with Aretha and Eartha are to me the best female singers of all time.
Love Miss Peggy Lee. "He's a Tramp" was sung and co-wriitten by her for the movie Lady and the Tramp. Doris Day -"Secret Love", "Sentimental Journey', another jazz great Diana Krall
Ahh the big band era. This is pretty much what America was listening to through the 40s right up until the boomer generation and rock and roll took over and changed everything. As a booner this was my mom's music. So we still got a lot of exposure to it especially on television right through the through the 60s. Peggy Lee was one of those singers that always captured my attention. My parents loved her.
Peggy Lee was the absolute essence of Class!!! SO glad you guys enjoyed it!! Now you absolutely have to listen to her Magnum Opus - "Is That All There Is?" !!!!
Peggy Lee lands a bit early for Bob Fosse's phenomenal effect on performance. She is kind of walking the line between Burlesque shows and Broadway shows with this song. Anne Rankin took his choreography torch and ran it even further for our great benefit.
This was originally a song from the Broadway musical, "Sweet Charity". She was the first singer to ever cover it, but certainly not the last. I love her version. ☮️
More female jazz vocalists from the 50s - Julie London - Cry Me A River (covered by Joe Cocker), Girl Talk, Daddy. Her husband Bobby Troupe was a jazz singer, composer (he wrote Route 66). They both were actors and starred in the 70s show Emergency! created by her first husband (also an actor) Jack Webb. Nancy Wilson - Guess Who I Saw Today, You Don't Know How Good I Feel (in the 80s she had a R&B song called Do You Still Dream About Me). Also an actress. Nina Simone. In the 50s she covered My Baby Just Cares for Me. She's probably better known for her protest songs like Mississippi Godd___. Another song from the 60s, I Want A Little Sugar in my Bowl. She covered all genres and was composer, musician and civil rights activist. Dinah Washington, also a musician - she also covered different genres and in the 50s her jazz hit was What A Difference A Day Made. In early 60s she and Brooke Benton had a hit with Baby You've Got What It Takes.
I am so glad you got to spend some time with the girls before school started! Thanks for reacting to this wonderful song from Peggy Lee, she is a treasure!
Love that there are still lots of oldies ti get to. Would love to see you hit some more Neil Sedaka- Calendar Girl, Right Next Door to an Angel, Breaking up is Hard to Do. You would love!
Big Spender was written for the Broadway musical Sweet Charity, and performed in the 1969 movie by Shirley McLean and cheetah Rivera among others. You might recall that Shirley McClain played Weezer in Steel Magnolias. Another sultry female artist with a similar style is Julie London. Julie London was also an actress who was a regular cast member in the 1970s series Emergency.
Shirley Bassey, Welsh singer, is another artist with a great powerhouse voice and style AND don’t forget the magnificent Tina Turner. Please do her duet with Bryan Adam’s ‘It’s Only Love’ live at Birmingham 1985. ‘Nutbush’ live at Wembley 2000, ‘Show Some Respect’ and Better Be Good To Me’ both live at Birmingham 1985.
OMG guys, you have so many of these big band singers from this era to explore, please check out Julie London 'cry me a river', it's wonderful and her voice is like pure silk!

I only discovered last year that - outside of his duet with Olivia Newton John - he had zero presence on the States' music scene! This does not even register as possible to me!
Actress, Singer, Dancer Shirley Maclaine made this song even more famous performing it in the 960s Musical Movie version of "Sweet Charity", an Excellent Movie!!
Actually the song most associated with Dame Shirley Bassey even though it comes from a show many years beforehand, I'd watch a live performance of Dame Shirley singing this, either in one of her " Audience With TV programmes or at HRH Prince Phillip 80th birthday party at The Royal Albert Hall, they were actually good friends, but it will give you a look at her sense of humour along with the singing
Hello, Rob Squad. Peggy Lee first garnered attention early in her career for a song called BLACK COFFEE. She was a fantastic singer whose songs, (I GOT IT BAD) AND THAT AIN'T GOOD, BLUES IN THE NIGHT, WHY DON'T YOU DO RIGHT? were both charming and seductive. This is from the film Sweet Charity, sung by women in a "Dance" hall trying to tempt "customers" in and had brilliant Fosse ( pronounced Fossie) choreography with it. Shirley Bassey's version of this is iconic! She is one of the great belters. She is Welsh like Tom Jones and about the same age. Try Diamonds are Forever by her but ALWAYS watch performance videos because she always gives her ALL!
The 1969 film version of "Sweet Charity" has a fantastic "Big Spender" scene you CAN SEE. All dance scenes are chorographed by Bob Fosse. The "Big Spender" scene is one of my favourite musical/dance scenes of film. A must watch if you like this and want to see it played out.

Loreena McKennitt! I have so many favorites but the first one of hers I heard was "Mystics Dream". Also you have to check out her live arrangement of W.B.Yeats "The Stolen Child" video by Ron B from her Nights From The Alhambra concert. This woman is so accomplished. You should really check her out. She's had a career spanning four decades. If you love instruments...she does a lot of renditions of folk music but she also writes her own songs. Her music has Celtic and middle eastern elements. I think you would love her. She can be considered 'World Music' or 'New Age'. She's also from Canada. She's also been given so many honors. She's an honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force and she's also a French Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She's been invested with the Order of Canada and Manitoba, as well as being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. There are so many others I can't possibly list.
I remember my best friend and I sashaying and singing this in third grade! 😹 Peggy Lee was awesome…try listening to Is That All There Is? My Momma’s favorite song of hers 😽💋🎶
Peggy Lee's version of "Pass Me By" is my favourite one. She also sang "I'm a Woman", Amber will LOVE that one. It's a great empowerment song from that time.
The song is from the Broadway musical Sweet Charity. You really ought to see the movie version, choreographed by Bob Fosse, performed by the Ladies (of the evening) in the dance hall. You get the real message of the song, as they compete to be the Big Spender's companion of the hour. For Doris Day, Secret Love, and get the video from the movie. For a new sensation, Keely Smith's Autumn Leaves is a great number.
You should check out the Mills Brothers. Got their start in the 20s a jazz quartet. They had a radion show I believe in the 30s. They appeared on Dean Martin's variety show from the 60s-70s. They were an influence on the Bee Gees. Some of their songs to check include Paper Doll, You Always Hurt The One You Love, Glow Worm, Till Then, Bye-Bye Blackbird, Up the Lazy River.
THANK YOU! for asking for Brenda Lee! She became a huge star at such a very young age, the most outstanding introduction to her would be her earliest tv appearance when she was about 12 years old, singing the song that gave her the life long nickname "Little Miss Dynamite". PLEASE check out "Brenda Lee - Dynamite (early tv appearance)" as it is titled on you tube.
This is the first time I've heard Peggy Lee do this song. I remember the song from the movie "Sweet Charity" which I think starred Shirley MacLaine. The other thing I remember was, it was adapted to be a commercial jingle for Muriel cigars. (That's right kids, there used to be cigar ads on TV!) They changed a lyric to "spend a little dime with me" since that's what the cigar cost. Late in her career Peggy Lee had a hit with a song written for her by Leiber and Stoller called "Is That All There Is?"
J and Amber, welcome back. You were missed, but I am so glad you had fun with your girls yesterday. Quality time with them is time (and love) they will always remember. I am proud of you for making them a priority. As for Ms. Peggy Lee, she is a Powerhouse! Her smooth smoky voice commands attention in any setting, uptempo to downtempo. My favorites of her songs are: "Fever," "Is That All there Is?" and two Christmas Songs: "I Love the Winter Weather" and "The Christmas Spell." I always find "The Christmas Spell" kind of spooky, but I love it and I bet you will too. Love the vibe as always. All the best to you and all of yours. Peace.
Not a female, but check out Louis Jordan who has songs like "Caldonia", "is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby", "Aint Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Jack, You're Dead!", & "I Know What You're Putting Down". There's some all women jazz bands too: International Sweethearts Of Rhythm, Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, Rita Rio & Her Mistresses Of Rhythm. Also try Postmodern Jukebox who does more modern songs but with older musical arrangements.
How could you overlook Diana Krall - winner of 3 Grammy awards and has over a dozen multi-platinum, platinum and gold albums. She was voted 2nd best jazz vocalist of the decade from 2000-2009. She was also nominated for "Album of the Year". Diana Krall - please give this jazz artist some attention!
I love the way you are there for each other. Encouraging and defending each other. Ya'll are so great to each other. And you love your children. And you are so proud of each other. HUGS 🙏❤🌹
YES!! Peggy Lee!! I love your reaction, Miss Amber, love watching you strut in your seat! More Peggy Lee classics are ' Is That All There Is?', 'I'm a Woman', 'Black Coffee' and so many more. She also performed at The White House for President Reagen. Another woman of that era was Caterina Valente and her songs 'Kiss of Fire' or 'The Breeze and I'.
Sophie Milman is a modern day torch singer who oozes sultry. She gives a sultry rendition of Kermit the Frog’s Bein’ Green - a song about embracing who you are. Or you could try Stay - a song that was written to be sultry. RSR family check her out and give this a thumbs up or down.
Given your reaction to this song, y’all would probably like the movie, CABARET with Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland’s daughter. It’s actually a musical, but the music makes sense to the story because a good part of the movie takes place in a World War II cabaret where singing is a major part of the entertainment. I haven’t looked it up, but I’m sure Liza must’ve won several awards for that movie. And she did her mamma proud. Edit: And since you mentioned Amy Winehouse, I’ll try again to get you to listen to the first song I heard her sing, I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW. She had already passed and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The song almost brought me to tears for two reasons: her singing was that good, and I knew that beautiful voice was already gone forever. 😢 m.th-cam.com/video/362JArvhAqg/w-d-xo.html Her words after the end of the song are the most poignant and painful. 😢
Not too many years ago there was an old song used in a TV commercial that I could not get out of my head. I shazamed it to find out it was a song by Peggy Lee called "Similau". Great tune that forever will be in my song rotation. And it sounds nothing like "Fever" or this tune.
Great song. Would love to see y’all react to Mel Torme….he was awesome. Love his song Coming Home Baby. He had perfect pitch. Love the crooners and ladies that you mentioned, as well.
The way Amber was movin to the unexpected beats, it looked like she'd heard it before. This song reminds me of the musical light water fountains in Vegas
You speculated that Amy Winehouse had to have been influenced by older jazz singers, and you are right. She said that she was particularly influenced by Billie Holliday, but also many others from the pre-hippie era. She billed herself as a jazz singer early in her career, though at that point she often blended it with hiphop.
It's impossible to not love Peggy Lee. I personally appreciate her minimalistic style. She manages to be unique and distinctive without heavy musical embellishment.
I've posted this before, but ne f the best, over the top musical numbers on film, also choreographed by Bob Fosse! The Death Scene from "All That Jazz."
Welcome back, Jay and Amber! Love that you’re taking in Sweet Charity’s best known number. But my favorite is There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This by Shirley MacLaine, Paula Kelly and Broadway legend Chita Rivera. Take it in and see if you’re aren’t smiling big time by the end!
This woman's voice is wonderful! As others have mentioned Peggy helped write and perform a lot of the songs in the original Disney 'Lady and the Tramp'. Two of the songs she performs are "He's a Tramp" as the character Peg and "We are Siamese" as the two cats Si and Am. I recommend you check out more Shirley Bassey. You did her singing the Goldfinger theme so try the song "I".
Lyrics were written by Dorothy Fields who also wrote lyrics for such jazz and pop standards as "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I'm In the Mood for Love." She also wrote the libretto for "Oklahoma." Please give a listen to Billy Eckstine's cover of "Satin Doll."
I am so happy that I found your channel. I am enjoying it a lot! I subscribed almost immediately. 😊 If you guys are looking for more jazz I would like to suggest Julie London. I love her. She's known for the song Cry Me a River. And even though the song Blue Moon has been covered a million times her version is by far my favorite! I hope you love her like I do. 😊
I remember this from the Muriel cigar commercials in the 60's, sung by Edie Adams. Great song. Peggy Lee was a Classy artist who knew how to deliver a performance.
You need to listen to Eartha Kitt. "I Wanna Be Evil" is a fun way to start. Her voice is distinctive and sensual. Beautiful. Tough. Barrier breaker and true class act.
Here I go again. So many times I have requested Dina Krall. A Canadian Jazz singer and pianist who is also married to Elvis Costello. My favorite song "Peel me a grape" done live. Hope you guys get a chance to see and hear her preform.
Try Rosemary Clooney’s Mambo Italiano. She was the first Clooney who broke big.
Ooh! Good call!
Yes, you absolutely have to explore Rosemary Clooney's musical catalog. She was fantastic.

Absolutely, and use the video from the move The Girl Can't Help It.
And, she starred on "Emergency!"

Here 'Blue Moon' is dreamy.

Peace.
Try Peggy Lee "it's a good day" from 1946
I remember this song back in the early to mid 60's was used for a commercial, cigars I think.
Muriel Cigars
Thank you I have always loved this song 😊
I love the way you are there for each other. Encouraging and defending each other. Ya'll are so great to each other. And you love your children. And you are so proud of each other. HUGS 🙏❤🌹
She was also nominated for an academy award for a movie called Pete Kelly's Blues
YES!!
You can call them band singers. Peggy, Doris, all started with bands.
Big spender was in the musical "Sweet Charity". A bunch of dance hall girls working the bar.
Peggy won an Academy Award for Pete Kelly's Blues in 1955. Not the usual type of movie you watch, and very old-fashioned, but an entertaining film.
Shirley Bassey own`s this song, her live version is amazing.

Her words after the end of the song are the most poignant and painful.
Mel is my favorite male jazz singer. They would love his scatting.
@@kevinhouse4376 yes indeed!
Loved you guys did this song,my grandmother absolutely loved this song and ms.lee in general thanks for the memories.
Watch the movie Sweet Charity. Fun movie and Fosse choreography.
I saw a production of the musical Sweet Charity on Broadway years ago with Christina Applegate in the lead role. Love this song from the musical!
This song was later used in a cigar commercial--back when those and cigarette ads were allowed on television. That ended at the start of 1971.
There is a clip on you tube of all the ladies singing this song in a 'dime-a-dance' club. Very cool.
I am so happy that I found your channel. I am enjoying it a lot! I subscribed almost immediately. 😊
If you guys are looking for more jazz I would like to suggest Julie London. I love her. She's known for the song Cry Me a River.
And even though the song Blue Moon has been covered a million times her version is by far my favorite! I hope you love her like I do. 😊
Jim Morrison stated in an interview that he liked Peggy Lee.
This song was everywhere when I was a kid. Love it!!
Great stuff! Love the whole vibe of this type of music.
When I was a kid I thought "So that's what grownup life will be!"
Here I go again. So many times I have requested Dina Krall. A Canadian Jazz singer and pianist who is also married to Elvis Costello. My favorite song "Peel me a grape" done live. Hope you guys get a chance to see and hear her preform.
From the Broadway play and movie “Sweet Charity” about a girl named Charity Hope Valentine.Shirley McClaine played her in the movie.
