The reason why this video has 2 minutes and 17 seconds of silence at the end is because that's how long it takes to recollect yourself from the awesomeness you just heard.
+Phantom Lord jimi was so fucked up on acid most of his live shows they were complete crap. my dad has a few on video that I have seen when he came to michigan. when dimebag was completely hammered he became ever better idk how that happens but it did. yes jim was very good but not the best. not even close. everyone has their own opinions, but this is a fact. he was only good when recording

My dad plays guitar and only does old 70's stuff for the most part. The heaviest stuff he plays is Def Leppard. One day I sat him down and let him hear the beginning of this song and the beginning of Judas Priest - Bloodstone and he was blown away. I caught him trying to play both riffs during the next weeks. it was great :)
In my head every time I hear that opening "Whoa" by Phil I think it's his real reaction hearing that riff for the first time. BTW Rex Brown fucking destroys on this track. Most underrated bassist in history.
and no, rex SUKS on this tune. the reason u are saying this is because this is one of the only metal tunes where can even HEAR the bass prominently. However... not only is he rly a guitar player playing bass like a guitar... but if you listen closely he is not even doubling the lines... he takes every shortcut he possibly can. Even an average bass player should be able to easily double every note... without a cheesy pick.
Rex DOES NOT "DESTROY" on this track ! he goes dum-dum-dum-dum...straight 8th notes holding down ONE NOTE. Anyone can learn to do that in 10 seconds! I love Pantera but DONT BE IDIOTS people!!! You just arent used to even being able to HEAR bass on nearly any metal track. Please, if you arent a musician, refrain from judging the technical skills of those who are. Something like "i love the sound/ vibe/ energy of this tune" is WAY more appropriate than trying to judge subtle details of that which you know not.
This entire line of replies is pretty much "Don't you dare say something because I feel like I know it better," but quality is only subjective I guess. You don't have to be a professional by any means to have an opinion on something. It's like having a chair that you like, and you say that you like it, but a carpenter rounds the corner and says something along the lines of "That chair actually sucks because the lathe working on the legs isn't something I, a professional in the matter, like," which just comes off as arrogant. And secondarily, yes, if you play bass with a pick, you are still a bassist. It's pretty much the definition of a bassist or anything with -ist at the end of it to be someone who practices something. Just petty gatekeeping.
This album is one of the only few albums that I listen to the whole way through! CFH and Far Beyond Driven are their best albums! Brings back a lot of good memories. Seen them back in 1993 (I believe) in Indy with Sacred Reich. Great show!
It's settled. We're just gonna have to create a loop after the 45 second verse back to the beginning of that actual verse, play once, then restart from the beginning of the jam and repeat the sequence. Get all that? Glad we're on the same page.
it's hard to compare heavy metal bands because they each have earner their own glory in their own right... some people like old metallica, some new, some both, some like pantera, some megadeth and so on and so forth... all of them have/had a gift and that is undeniable. Thank god for Heavy metal rock and all the genres that accompany it, that's what I wanted to say!
I can almost guess that what drives Phil wild and gives inhuman power in his vocals is the music made by his bandmates. It can possess anyone... no offense to Anselmo fan's but I can listen to and enjoy Pantera music even without his vocals. That's how beautiful and awesome the talents of Dime, Vinnie and Rex are!!!
I know many will disagree and I understand. And I love all Panthers albums but something about Cowboys from Hell, to me, makes it their best album. You can hear and taste their thirst to rock and be the best. Almost all the songs on this album are just banging Totally my opinion. Possibly their best album. And the album that throat punched me so many years ago and kicked me while I was down. And I loved every minute of it. Still do. RIP Abbott brothers.

all pantera"s album are legendary, but this one is the begining of PanterA , he really has something different from the others he's so powerfull , PanterA the last real metal band RIP Dime and pantera =/
My God I've known since Cowboy's came out that every song on it was beyond amazing, and the album as a whole, is perfection thru and thru. But I just listened to The Art of Shredding again and I swear it's better than when I heard it for the first or second time.
For those of you that still may have not heard anything from their album "Power Metal", you should check out the songs "Over and Out" and "PST 88." Those are my personal favorites off of that record. Especially Over and Out. It was released in 1988 and was Phil's debut with the band. It was the first album where you can start to hear their crossover into playing heavier. It's a killer record if you ask me. Highly underrated. Pantera are easily my favorite band of all time. RIP Dime!!!
i'm not a pantera's fan but i bought pantera's remastered for my bf, well i bought the two cd instead of the 3 cds. I learn to listen to pantera and hell yeah i'm so addicted, maybe i'll get a new one for him and i'll keep the one i bought. :)

Seriously one of the best comments I've ever heard!
HELL YEAH no pun intended
For sure! Ya ears need to get used to this stuff!
Not even. You gotta take in the moment of silence for Dime and Vinnie.
Really?
0:58 such an amazing riff. This has got to be one of the nastiest, meanest, most evil riffs of all time. I love it
Cowboys from hell never gets old. This is the album that got me into Pantera. Dimebag is metal God on the guitar.
my opinion but NO ONE will ever come close to dimebag.
Jimi Hendrix is God and Darrel is Jesus... That should make sense to you
+Phantom Lord jimi was so fucked up on acid most of his live shows they were complete crap. my dad has a few on video that I have seen when he came to michigan. when dimebag was completely hammered he became ever better idk how that happens but it did. yes jim was very good but not the best. not even close. everyone has their own opinions, but this is a fact. he was only good when recording
+Phantom Lord lmfao ok
But, you are entitled to your opinion and I can't make you think Jimi is better, but, both of them are the greatest guitar players ever
I seriously worry for anyone who doesn't feel compelled to headbang at 2:41
eddievangraham I will headband through this whole song and every other pantera song I hear
every fucking time
Yep. Agreed. That's cos they are dead from the feet up. True dat.
eddievangraham I cant, I'm sore from headbanging to domination five times in a row yesterday, i headband in spirit though
eddievangraham heck yea
Dimebag sounds like 6 guitarists!! No one can match this icon.
